Guess who went to target for the first time! We are officially starting PA training and I am so excited! I’ve been taking things VERY slow with Monti to ensure there is no burnout, something my previous service dog suffered from (my fault as her handler not knowing better). Expect to see a lot more trips from us soon!! And hopefully a CGC certification by 18 Months! I am also going to pick back up some sent training. Another fun thing coming in the next few months is guide work/ mobility training! We will be starting her cues (find, follow, steady,etc.) without using active mobility until we are OFA cleared! You may also see some handles here soon, these are to help get her used to them, a proper mobility harness and handle will be purchased after OFA all clear around 18 months- 2 years. I am very excited for this next chapter!

MYTH: "Don’t take your puppy anywhere until they're fully vaccinated."

FACT: "The primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the *standard of care* for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated. Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age." (AVSAB Position Statement on Puppy Socialization)

FACT: If you wait until your puppy is full vaccinated, you've missed their critical socialization period.

Vets, rescues and breeders who are clinging to the outdated belief that dogs should be prevented from socialization until fully vaccinated are not keeping up with the current research, literature and recommendations from behavior professionals.

PSA: Just because your dog doesn't growl or bite when your child handles them roughly, it doesn't mean they should have to tolerate it.

The onus is on the parent to teach children age-appropriate ways to interact with dogs.

The responsibility of safety is NOT 100% on the dog.

Teach the kids, not just the dogs.

Oooo this teenager is wild 😭working on some settling, I am taking this extremely slow with Monty. At ten months we still haven’t started PA because she is just not ready yet. She is confident, listens to all cues on the first time 99% of the time. But OMG her excitement to work is something else! We worked a lot on settling when she was a young puppy and she was amazing at it but now that she’s older she needs some more work lol. We still haven’t started task training besides scent work and basic retrievals, and this is all okay! I am in no rush with her, remember to go at your dogs speed, even if that means regression and taking steps back. Happy training everyone:)

Muzzled dogs are good dogs.
Gemini unfortunately had an incident while being walked -on a leash- by her walker, where 3 dogs (one large and two littles) all ran up and tried to attack her. While the smallest dog, a chihuahua was actively trying to bite her Gemini picked up the dog and bit it. Obviously with there being a 70lb weight difference between a chihuahua and a Doberman the dog was hurt and left with bite holes. Thankfully the dog is okay and recovered (as far as we are aware). I was not present during this however I was told all three dogs were off leash, and aggressively trying to charge her, while the smallest was trying to bite at Gemini. These dogs have charged Gemini multiple times but it has never escalated to this. Gemini has charged at them before through a fence from escaping her leash. (We now use multiple methods to ensure this does not happen again). No legal action is going to be taken on either side, I do however know this was in no ways Gemini’s fault, nor was she behaving aggressively in any way until all 3 dogs were attacking/ charging her. The owners of the the dogs requested we muzzle Gemini. I am okay with this as Gemini is muzzle trained, however it just hurts to know that we have brought it to the owners attention multiple times to leash their dogs, and unfortunately, off leash dogs with no control led to a situation that negatively impacted both sides. With all this being said, muzzled dogs are still good dogs and Gemini is one of the best dogs I have ever had the honor to own, love, and train with.

Introducing Saturday Drop off/Drop in sessions!
Hourly drop off sessions available Saturdays, 9am - 4pm. Need to get some of Fido's energy out but don't have the time? Drop him off at Gemini Dog Training Academy in Vermilion! We will work on whatever you want from leash walking to confidence building, you'll be sure Fido is picked up happy, tired, and with some more training under his leash! At the end of each session, pawrents will be emailed a homework list of training material covered in the training session to continue at home!

Talk about progress! Bruce here will continue to go through 6 week programs until he can be certified as a therapy dog! He is doing remarkably well!
