Turkey harvesting has begun. Today I processed 2 of the 6.

Tom weighed in at 28lbs - a great return on 15 weeks growth. The female was probably close to 20.

Rather than storing whole turkeys, I break them down into legs, wings, and thighs. Backs and necks are reserved for broth, and breast meat is ground.

2lbs of ground turkey will feed me next week (tomorrow is meal prep day). I also made stock with 1 neck, 2 livers, and 2 hearts. The dogs get a splash on their kibble, and I prefer it when cooking rice.

The freezer is well on the way to being stocked. Incredibly grateful there is unseasonably cool weather for this task.

The chickens will eat the entire rind. If there is anything left when I go out a midday, I'll be shocked 😀

Making deliveries in shock today - and incredibly thankful.

We felt the house shake last night, but it's an old farmhouse and tends to do that in thunderstorms. I was gobsmacked to encounter this in the dark and more in awe in daylight.

This maple tree fell parallel to our backyard fence, took out an aluminum shed, and clipped my new greenhouse. The greenhouse appears structurally sound and reparable.

This was truly an ideal scenario. If it had fallen in any other direction, it would have taken out the propane tank, power lines, and/or the house.

I'm looking at a lot of work the next few days, but I'm choosing to see the good and not dwell on what could have been.

I am so thrilled that this easy method to reduce food waste continues to provide food for my flock. Thank you to my participants!

Took a break from jam making to make a blueberry cobbler. I tried the cookbook recipe, and it was 🔥. Perfect fruit, sturdy biscuit topping, and no boil over mess!

I also stored 4 quarts of blueberries in the freezer and saved some fresh for this week's oatmeal 😋

Gorgeous weather for berry picking. I collected 6lbs of blueberries and 8lbs of blackberries today.

I also picked up peaches and a cantaloupe from the shop.

Super excited to replenish my blackberry jam supply and fill the freezer with blueberries for my morning oats. But I also see scones in my future, and I want to attempt blackberry sorbet.

Lovely, restful morning at the lake. I practiced casting and watched fish nibble, but no bites this round.

I helped a turtle cross the road as we left 😄

Next time, I'll bring a bag to collect trash from the space.

Thankful for a moment to paise mid-week. Now, back to work!

Kitchen to Coop is an entirely different experience for me in the warm weather months. The poultry is happy, though, and that's what matters to me most.

Maggie would like to say thanks for the chicken leftovers too.😄

Yes, the Tower Garden continues to provide me with fresh greens and tomatoes. I'm quite thankful for it in this wildly busy season. It might not get the same level of attention it did in winter, but as a closed system, it can handle that.

I love my greenhouse. It turned out better than I dreamed.

I'm down to finishing touches on the 9'x6'x7' structure. Next step: hydroponics and fish!

I've spent about $150 on the roof and a couple of boards. Repurposed windows and scrap wood were used for walls. I even added a workbench outside, which will be helpful for harvest season.

The pool opening has been slightly delayed, thanks to yesterday's power outage. Power was restored overnight, and I was able to devote today this area.

I didn't have the correct bit for a box of screws that a friend donated, and I didn't feel like making yet another store run this weekend. I'll pick one up tomorrow. Thankfully, I discovered a stash of old screws in my toolbelt and was able to finish the staircase.

I developed 3 unique seating areas thanks to donations of pavers, firepit, and firewood from several friends. I'm looking forward to many hours here this season.

All that's left is to defeat the algae 😅.

First sunflower bloom of the year!

I plant sunflowers around my coop, primarily because they provide shade during the summer for my flock. They are a lovely addition to the farm.

An added benefit is that the finches love them too. They spread the seeds around, and I get lots of volunteer plants. I definitely don't remember planting any here!

We found a small, portable air conditioner and are testing it in one of the sunniest rooms of our old farmhouse. Willow has already given her seal of approval.

It's essentially a swamp cooler. There is a plastic insert you fill with water and freeze. The fan blows air over the insert and out the vent. Cool air with no risk of electrocution 😄

I've been nurturing the soil around my strawberry plants for two years, and the work is paying off!

This variety is called Whopper, and they are ever bearing. My task now is to pick daily, which will encourage them to re-flower and set more fruit.

This handful of lovelies will rest indoors until breakfast tomorrow. They'll be a delicious addition to my morning oatmeal.

The goatlings have been living with the herd for 1 week. This rainy morning I found them snuggled in the barn with the adults instead of on the opposite side.

Mazzy was over there, enjoying the solitude 🤣

No more goat babies yet, but I continue to keep an eye on my ladies. I'm down to my last cheese container and dreaming of ice cream, so hopefully they'll arrive soon and I'll have milk again.

For now, the herd is happy together.

Flying solo at yoga this week. First sting of the year - on my foot no less - didn't slow me down.

Arrived early so I could practice parallel parking and take a nap. 😉

Great to be back after rain kept me away the last two weeks.

I can do many farm tasks solo, but I've learned which ones I need to ask for help. Banding bucklings is definitely a two person job.

At 10 weeks old, Baltar will soon be too large for my castration tools. Rather than buy a larger size, I opted to castrate (aka wether) him.

He and Sadie are still listed for sale, but I've been toying with the idea of adding wool products. This gives me the option to keep him in my herd without competition between him and Wesley.

Leora just got home from a major surgery, and I'm thankful she was available to assist.

PS: Baltar has gone from a thin runt to a thriving, healthy goatling. Many thanks to all my guests who helped bottle feed!

Greenhouse week 2: second interior wall installed, raised beds built, water system staged.

I used scrap wood to build the interior beds and lined them with an old pool cover. I dug down the soil to get geothermal benefit and used that soil to fill the beds.

I staged the water tank, water barrels, and filter system. I want to be sure I like the aesthetic before filling them, and it will be safer to install the roof and guttering without them in place.

Busy week - time to rest!

Thanks to a break in today's much needed rain, I got the 2nd wall of my greenhouse installed.

Side note: I discovered that I am silly enough to drive my sedan with 10' 2x4s hanging out the windows while it's raining 🤣. Or maybe stubborn. 😉.
