Figured it was about time I introduced this little lady.

Welcome "Spinoff's A Feather In My Cap" aka Feather. Feather came to us in early July from our friends at Lazy JF Bar aussies to be bred to Dually, but life had other plans so she will be staying with us till winter to raise some puppies here at Orchard Bay!

Pregnancy has been confirmed via ultrasound, with an estimated due date of September 26th. For more info on Feather or her upcoming litter, please check out our website or contact us. 🐾

2024 has not been our friend at all. Today, we found out that Willow's breeding didn't take. We will try again in the winter on her next heat. With Mymic spayed and our local dock closed down, we will not be at much for events this summer. While we are still around, we will likely be pretty quiet on social media with not much going on. We hope that 2025 brings us better luck 🤞

Mymic is officially retired! Tomorrow, Mymic is being spayed, retiring from breeding after a rollercoaster of the last 6 months.

A recap of the last 6 months:
In early December, we took Mymic down to California to have a date with a stud for our first litter with her. Everything went well, and we were super excited. In January, we confirmed pregnancy via ultrasound but only seen a couple pups, so it'd likely be a smaller litter, but we were excited nonetheles.

In February we did her puppy count xray and found out she had reabsorbed her litter. We were so heartbroken but know it can happen for a variety of reasons, so figured we'd just try again her next heat.

A few weeks after we found out she reabsorbed, she was diagnosed with open pyometra. Pyometra can be very serious and often results in emergency spay if it's closed. Thankfully, hers was open and we caught it early, so we were able to treat it. After a couple weeks of treatment, we finally got the all clear and continued on with plans. With pyo, it's strongly suggested that the female be bred the following heat to try to prevent reoccurence, so that was our plan.

She came into heat at the very end of April, but her heat just didn't seem right, so back to the vet we went. Unfortunately, Mymic was diagnosed with cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) which is thickening of the uterine lining, resulting in cysts all over the lining. This can cause a variety of issues from infertility, litter reabsorption, and preterm birth. There is no cure for it, but breeding and having a successful litter can help clear some of it to increase the odds of fertility in the future. Because of this, we decided to try using Dually with her as he has produced large litters, and he's already here so no traveling and minimal stress on Mymic. We decided it would be our best option. Everything went well with breeding, but unfortunately we found out on Monday that she is empty. Her uterine lining has continued to thicken and she has an extremely high risk of pyo again.

So, she is officially being spayed tomorrow. She will continue to live out her happy dog life here with us, attending events and sleeping on our bed. 💕

This past weekend, we tried something different. We attended a 3 day sheep camp at down in Washington. The dogs and I all had a blast, and learned a ton! Although we don't have plans for any trialing, it was great to see the dogs do what they were originally bred for. We look forward to attending again next year.

2023 is officially over but was an amazing year! We took the year off breeding to focus on letting the dogs be dogs, and attend more events during the summer. We hit a lot of our goals and so much more. Not only did the dogs have a blast, we also met a ton of new people that we are forever thankful for.

Mymic gained a total of 12 new titles; conformation champion, rally novice, scent detection instinct, scent detection novice, novice trick dog, intermediate trick dog, advanced trick dog, novice sprinters, dock novice, dock junior, versatility novice, and versatility advanced. She also has 1/3 legs towards her Rally intermediate, 1/5 legs of her Dock Senior with a PB of 16', and 1/3 legs for her Chase Ability.

Dually gained 4 new titles; sprinters, dock junior, dock senior with a PB of 18', and hydrodash novice. We put Dually's titling and trialing onto the back burner this year, and focused on the things he loves to do.

Willow didn't come out with any new titles, but did attend her first events. She handled it all super well, gaining 2/3 rally novice legs and her first conformation point while having a ton of fun doing it. We plan to have her travel with us again to a couple events this year.

We also had a couple of our puppies try new things this year, from agility classes to dock and disc trials. We are so proud of them!

Thank you for all of your support along the way. We have big plans and goals for this year that we can't wait to share with you all.

Last weekend Mymic and I attended our first ever scent detection trial. She did amazing and earned her Instinct title (SDIN) and her Novice title (SDN), and also placed 3rd in her class in novice containers. Completing her SDN also completed her Versatility Advanced (VA) title. Scent work had very quickly became one of Mymic's favorite sports, and we can't wait for our next trial!

The final weekends of the summer event season! Last weekend, we attended Pooch Pool School regional qualifier event. Mymic finished her Dock Novice title with a pb of 9'3. She came a long way since her first event in June and had a blast. Dually recieved his Dock Senior title with a new pb of 18'. Mymic qualified for regionals in distance jump, and Dually qualified in hydrodash. However, with regionals being in Alberta and less than a week away, we opted not to go. Instead, we attended the Comox Valley Exhibition to compete at West Central Waterdogs dock event this past weekend. Dually finished his HydroDash Novice title and earned more jumps towards his junior and senior advanced titles. Mymic received her Dock Junior title and gained 1 leg of her senior title with a new pb of 16'! Both dogs had a blast, and a couldn't be more proud of their progress and success this dock diving season! 💕 Now for a much needed break!

Upper Island Circuit Recap!

This past week Mymic, Willow, and I attended the Upper Vancouver Island Circuit and competed in conformation and rally for a total of 7 shows and 4 rally trials.

Day 1 and 2, Mym beat out Willow for Winners Female and best of breed for 2 points. On day 2, Willow and Mym both competed in the rally novice class for 2 trials. Both girls Q'd both runs, with Mymic taking High in Class in the second trial and Willow taking Second in Class.

On Day 3, Mymic took best of breed and best of winners for 2 points, finishing her Champion.

Day 4, Mymic went best of breed for 2 points towards her grand champion.

Day 5, Mymic went Best of Opposite for 1 point. Mymic also competed in Rally, getting her last Q in Rally Novice and 4th in class. She then moved up to the Intermediate class and Q'd with a 3rd in class. Completing her Rally Novice also qualified her for her Versatility Novice title. Willow unfortunately came into heat and wasn't able to finish her Rally Novice, so we hope to finish it this fall. Mymic also played in the Juniors ring with our friend Panagiota and won their class.

Day 6, Mymic went Best of Breed for 2 points, and Willow took Best of Winners for her first point.

Day 7, Mymic took Best of Breed for another 2 points. A huge thank you to Charlotte Gough for taking Mym into the breed ring while I took Willow in, when we had an overlap on ring times and handlers.

We also had our friends aussie, Klutch, with us for the last 5 days, and he gained another 4 points towards his champion. Thank you to Panagiota and Siona Rounis for handling Klutch and Willow for us!

We had a ton of fun and are so thankful to our show family for all the help and support! We would not have been as successful without you! From handling, to general moral support and everything in between, thank you 💕

2 new titles! Dually and Mymic participated in a sprinters event this past weekend. Dually brought home his Spinters (S) title and a total of 311 points. Mymic received her Novice Sprinters (NS) title and a total of 213 points. Both dogs had a blast, and a relaxing "fun" event weekend was definitely needed.

A successful weekend once again for Mymic! On Saturday, she took Best of Breed for 2 more points under judge Regina Bryant (who is also an ASCA breeder judge). 🎉 She only needs 4 more points to finish her champion, and fingers crossed, she gets them at our shows in August 🤞. We have this weekend off, and then we're in full swing at events every weekend till September!

*photos from Sunday, because I forgot to ask a friend to take any the rest of the weekend 😅

If you've seen our stories, you know that while we haven't posted much, we've been busy. Mymic and I started out conformation showing. In May, she went BOB under judge Sandra Lex, and in June, she went WB and Best Opposite under Judge Shawn Nichols. Giving her 4 points towards her champion. Then, at the end of June, we went to a dock diving event. Dually received his Dock Junior title and a new PB of 13'6. Mymic wasn't so sure of the blue pool, but we worked through it, and she got 2 jumps in towards her Dock Novice. We have plenty more adventures planned this summer, and I can't wait to share ☀️

With our current heat wave, don't forget to keep your dogs hydrated! ☀️

With our current heat wave, don't forget to keep your dogs hydrated! ☀️

💦 Sharing again because I think it's super important! 💦

Adding liquids to your dogs kibble is important in helping them stay hydrated, especially with summer weather hot on our heels! 🥵

Not every dog likes soaked kibble (Halo refuses to touch her food if I add water) and that's okay! You can try adding ice cubes if this is the case.

Remember to always have water accessible, whether your dog enjoys soaked kibble or not. All of my dogs have their own pails kept filled with fresh water in their kennels to ensure they have water available at all times. This also makes it easy for me to know who is drinking water (and how much) and who isn't.

Stay hydrated! 😁

💦 HYDRATION 💦

Hydrating your dog is something so simple but it's actually so overlooked and most people don't think about hydrating when it comes to meal times.

If your dog is eating a kibble diet, they are more prone to dehydration. This is because the dry kibble requires moisture for digestion. When your dog is not adequately hydrated, the body pulls water from the internal organs to digest the kibble and this can lead to the state of mild dehydration. Even if they are drinking throughout the day, the digestion process pulls water from their system after eating.

One of the best and easiest thing you can do as a kibble feeder is HYDRATE YOUR DOGS FOOD!

Adding water to kibble softens it for digestion and hydrates your dog's body systems.

Great options to hydrate kibble include
💧Filtered Water
💧Coconut Water
💧Bone Broth
💧Goat's Milk
💧Decaffeinated Green Tea (aids in cancer prevention)

Quick Tip - you can freeze all of the above in trays or silicone molds and then pop out a cube or two and melt with hot water at meal time!

*Always give your dog access to fresh water at all times

*Always rest your dog after eating any meal. Never exercise your dog immediately after eating due to risk of bloat.
