Puppies are wonderful. They are even better when they are trained!

It’s getting warm outside. Place the back of your hand on the cement. If you can’t hold it there 5 seconds then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. But if you buy your dog boots, give him time to get used to them!

A well-behaved dog is priceless.

Duke, a three-year old Belgian Malinois, and Deano, a six- year old Cane Corso, contentedly lounge on my leather furniture while I clean house. I allow them to rest on the furniture because the wood floors are hard on their joints. These dogs are my precious pets, but they are not allowed to dominate my home. How can two large breeds, both alpha personalities, enjoy such liberties in a house and not run amok? It is all in the training.

Everyone knows dogs require training. However, what many people do not know is that there is no ‘one size fits all’ training method. Three hundred thirty-nine breeds of dog are recognized internationally. They are grouped into ten categories based upon purpose, function, appearance, or size. Each dog, despite sharing breed characteristics, is unique. This is why one German Shepherd from a litter becomes an excellent police K9, and the sibling of its litter will hide from a burglar in its home. This understanding of dog temperament is instrumental in a trainer’s ability to determine which method of training suits your pet best.

So before you pick up a clicker, a treat, a corrective collar, or electric collar, have a trainer assess your dog’s temperament. If you already employ a trainer, ask him or her to explain the method of training being used and the reason it is the best fit for your pet.
