Happy Paws Pet Sitting Burlington Dogs is now Happy Paws! We offer cat sitting, dog walking, boarding & house sitting. Hi, my name is Suzie and I'm the owner of Happy Paws.
(2)

Here's a little of our history...

In early 2020, the opportunity to purchase a dog walking business, Burlington Dogs, fell into my lap, and I jumped on it! I had been helping a friend with her pet-sitting business from time to time, and I loved it. I took over Burlington Dogs from co-founders George and Helen, who had done a fantastic job building the company from scratch since 2018. I'm so happy

to be carrying on the legacy they started, and honoured to still serve the clients who stayed on with me as the new owner. Changing the business name was always in the back of my mind. While Burlington Dogs primarily did dog walking, we picked up other furry friends as clients throughout the years and started to provide additional services. It was important to me to have a business name that captured all the services we offer for all pets. The Happy Paws name came about with the help of my oldest daughter. She was working on a school project where she was tasked with creating a business. She chose to work on a pet-sitting business. She was proudly showing me her work, and I thought, "Happy Paws...what a great name!" With her permission (and a promise of future partnership), together we created a logo and started the steps towards transitioning from Burlington Dogs to Happy Paws. Everyone always tells me I have the best job, and I totally agree. It's fun, but it is still a business, and I have a professional approach to it...and yes, belly rubs and ear scratches are a big part of the professional approach! We've always been a small and personal business, and I like it that way. Our team is comprised of pet owners, animal lovers, and overall amazing humans. We all have years of experience dealing with animals of different breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Whether you are seeking regular or occasional dog walks, overnight care, or care of your cat or other fur baby while you're away, we will be there. We are committed to making your pet's time away from you that much easier. You will have peace of mind knowing that your pet is in our care.

Heads up friends! Tick season is here in Ontario, and there's been a big spike in Lyme disease-carrying ticks. These tiny pests love hanging out in wooded and grassy areas, ready to hitch a ride on you or your furry friend.

🐾 Pet Safety Tips:
Check your pets for ticks regularly, especially after they've been outdoors.
Use tick prevention treatments recommended by your vet.
If you find a tick, remove it carefully with fine-tipped tweezers, pulling straight up without crushing it.

🐾 Stay Tick-Free:
When you're out and about, wear long sleeves and pants.
Stick to the center of trails and avoid brushing against tall grass and bushes.

🐾 Lyme Disease Alert:
For Lyme disease transmission, a tick needs to be attached for over 24 hours.
If you or your dog get bitten, watch for symptoms like fever, headaches, joint pain, and a bull’s-eye rash. Early detection is crucial to prevent serious health issues.

Public Health Ontario is already reporting 60 cases of Lyme disease this year while tick removal kits are “flying off the shelves.”

Golden Playtimes: Choosing the Right Toys for Your Senior Pet

The journey with our pets is a beautiful tapestry of memories, from their playful puppy or kitten days to their dignified senior years. As the proud owner of Happy Paws and a lifelong animal enthusiast, I've come to appreciate the unique needs and joys of caring for senior pets. One aspect that often gets overlooked is playtime for our older companions. Just because they've got a few grey whiskers doesn't mean they've lost their zest for play!

Senior pets, much like senior humans, have specific needs. Their energy levels might have decreased, and their joints might be a bit stiffer, but their love for play and their bond with you remains as strong as ever.

Why is Play Important for Senior Pets?

1. Physical Health: Gentle play helps keep their joints mobile and maintains muscle tone.
2. Mental Stimulation: Toys that engage their minds can stave off cognitive decline and keep them alert.
3. Bonding: Playtime is a beautiful opportunity to strengthen your bond, providing comfort and assurance in their senior years.
4. Mood Boost: Play releases endorphins, which can help combat feelings of depression or lethargy in older pets.

Tailored Toy Recommendations for Senior Pets:

1. Soft Chew Toys: Gentle on the teeth and gums, these are perfect for senior dogs who still love a good chew session.
2. Puzzle Toys with Larger Pieces: Engage their brains without straining their eyes or paws.
3. Comfort Toys: Plush toys that they can cuddle with, especially if they've become more sedentary.
4. Gentle Laser Pointers: A slower-moving laser can still engage the hunting instincts of senior cats without exhausting them.
5. Squeaky Toys with Easy Activation: Older pets might not bite as hard, so toys that squeak with a gentle touch can be rewarding for them.

In the twilight years of our pets' lives, it's our responsibility and privilege to ensure they remain comfortable, happy, and engaged. By choosing the right toys and setting aside time for gentle play, we can enrich their golden years and express our gratitude for the years of love and loyalty they've given us.

To all the guardians of senior pets, let's celebrate and cherish every moment with our furry elders. Their playfulness, wisdom, and grace are a testament to the enduring bond between humans and animals.

Feline Fun Zones: Crafting the Ultimate Entertainment Station for Your Cat

Cats are creatures of curiosity, agility, and playfulness. Their instincts drive them to explore, climb, and hunt. As the proud owner of Happy Paws and a devoted cat lover, I've always believed in creating environments that cater to these instincts, ensuring our feline friends lead enriched, active lives even indoors.

An entertainment station, or what I like to call a "Feline Fun Zone," is more than just a collection of toys. It's a space designed to stimulate your cat's senses, challenge their intellect, and provide them with hours of entertainment.

Why Invest in a Cat Entertainment Station?

1. Physical Exercise: Climbing towers and chasing toys help keep your cat agile and fit.
2. Mental Stimulation: Puzzle feeders and interactive toys challenge your cat's intellect, preventing boredom.
3. Safety: An entertained cat is less likely to indulge in destructive behaviours or try to escape.
4. Independence: While cats love our company, they also value their independence. An entertainment station allows them to have 'me-time.'

Ideas for Crafting the Perfect Feline Fun Zone:

1. Climbing Towers & Cat Trees: These provide vertical space for your cat to climb, scratch, and perch. It's a great way to cater to their love for heights.
2. Interactive Feeders: Turn mealtime into playtime. These feeders dispense food as your cat plays, making them work for their treats.
3. Hanging Toys: Dangling toys from the entertainment station can mimic the movement of prey, tapping into their hunting instincts.
4. Tunnels & Hideouts: Cats love to hide and stalk. Tunnels provide them with a fun space to play and rest.
5. Window Perches: Set up a cozy spot by the window where your cat can sunbathe and watch the world go by.

Remember, the key is to understand your cat's preferences. Some cats love to climb, while others prefer to play on the ground. Observe their behaviours and tailor the entertainment station to their likes.

To all the cat parents out there, let's create a haven of fun, exploration, and relaxation for our feline friends. By investing in their entertainment, we're ensuring they lead happy, healthy, and fulfilled lives.

Handcrafted Happiness: DIY Dog Toy Ideas for Your Furry Best Friend

There's a unique joy in crafting something with your hands, especially for someone you love. And who better to appreciate our handiwork than our loyal canine companions? As the proud owner of Happy Paws and an avid DIY enthusiast, I've discovered that making toys for our dogs isn't just a fun pastime—it's a way to bond, understand their play preferences, and ensure the toys are safe and tailored just for them.

Why DIY Dog Toys?

1. Personal Touch: You know your dog best. Crafting a toy that suits their play style and preferences ensures they'll love it.
2. Safety: By choosing the materials yourself, you can ensure the toy is free from harmful chemicals or small parts.
3. Eco-Friendly: Upcycle old clothes, towels, or toys and give them a new life as a dog toy, reducing waste.
4. Cost-Effective: Making your own toys can be more affordable than store-bought ones, mainly if you use materials you already have.

Here are some simple DIY Dog Toy Ideas to Inspire You:

1. Braided Rope Toy: Use old t-shirts or towels, cut them into strips, and braid them together for a sturdy tug-of-war toy.
2. Tennis Ball Treat Dispenser: Make a small slit in a tennis ball, fill it with treats, and watch your dog have hours of fun trying to get them out.
3. Sock and Bottle Cruncher: Place an empty plastic bottle inside an old sock and tie a knot. The crunchy sound is sure to intrigue your pup!
4. Homemade Squeaky Toys: Sew a squeaker (available online or from old toys) inside a hand-sewn fabric shape, like a bone or heart.
5. Interactive Puzzle Box: Use a cardboard box, fill it with treats, and cut out random holes. Your dog will love figuring out how to retrieve the goodies!

Crafting for our pets is a testament to our love and care for them. It's about creating something special that brings joy to both the maker and the recipient. So, to all the crafty dog lovers, I encourage you to explore the DIY world. Let your creativity shine, and craft a toy your furry friend will cherish.

Paws and Planet: Embracing Sustainable Play with Eco-Friendly Pet Toys

In today's world, sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it's a responsibility. As pet lovers and guardians of our planet, we can combine our love for animals with our environmental commitment. How? By choosing eco-friendly toys for our furry friends!

As the owner of Happy Paws and a staunch advocate for sustainable living, I've always been looking for ways to reduce our carbon pawprint. One of the simplest yet impactful ways is by opting for toys made from sustainable, recyclable, or upcycled materials.

Why Choose Eco-Friendly Toys?

1. Safety First: Many eco-friendly toys are made without harmful chemicals, ensuring playtime is safe for your pet.
2. Durability: Sustainable toys are often designed to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing waste.
3. Planet-Friendly: By supporting eco-friendly products, we contribute to reducing pollution, conserving resources, and promoting sustainable practices in the pet industry.

Some of Our Favourite Eco-Friendly Toys Include:

1. H**p Rope Toys: Durable and biodegradable, these are perfect for tug-of-war games.
2. Recycled Rubber Fetch Toys: These toys are made from non-toxic recycled rubber and are great for active dogs.
3. Organic Catnip Toys: Cats love catnip made with organic, pesticide-free catnip.
4. Upcycled Stuffed Animals: Give old toys a second life by turning them into pet toys. Just ensure they're safe and free from small parts.
5. Bamboo Laser Toys: A sustainable twist on a classic cat favourite.

When choosing toys for your pet, always consider their safety, durability, and environmental impact. It's a small step, but collectively, our choices can make a significant difference.

To all the eco-conscious pet parents out there, let's lead the way in sustainable pet care. By making mindful choices, we can ensure a brighter, greener future for our pets and our planet.

Balancing Work and Whiskers: Ensuring Your Pet Stays Engaged While You Work From Home

The shift to remote work has brought about many changes, including spending more time with our beloved pets. While having our furry companions by our side can be a source of joy and comfort, it can also pose a challenge: How do we keep them entertained while engrossed in work?

As the owner of Happy Paws and a dedicated animal lover, I've faced this challenge firsthand. It's essential to balance being productive and ensuring our pets are happy and engaged. After all, a bored pet can quickly become a mischievous one!

Here are some tried-and-tested ways to keep your pet entertained during work hours:

Puzzle Feeders: These are fantastic tools that stimulate your pet's mind. They have to figure out how to get the treats out, which can keep them occupied for a good while. Plus, it's a great way to slow down those fast eaters!

Automated Laser Toys: Cats, in particular, love chasing that elusive red dot. Automated laser toys can move unpredictably, ensuring your cat stays engaged and gets exercise.

Interactive Toys: Toys that make sounds or move on their own can capture your pet's attention. Whether it's a squeaky toy for dogs or a battery-operated mouse for cats, these toys can provide hours of entertainment.

DIY Play Stations: Create a mini obstacle course or play station using boxes, tunnels, and toys. This can be a fun playground for cats and small dogs.

Scheduled Playtime: Take short breaks to play with your pet during your workday. A quick game of fetch or a short cuddle session can go a long way in keeping them happy.

Safe Outdoor Access: If possible, allow your pet some supervised outdoor time. A catio for cats or a fenced yard for dogs can provide a change of scenery and some fresh air.

Remember, every pet is unique. Observing and understanding what activities and toys resonate most with your furry friend is essential. The goal is to ensure they're mentally stimulated and physically active, even when you're busy.

So, to all the remote workers juggling spreadsheets and squeaky toys, you've got this! With some creativity and planning, you can ensure you and your pet have a fulfilling day.

Unleashing Your Crafty Side: A Guide to Creating the Perfect DIY Toy for Your Feline Friend

Hello, fellow cat enthusiasts and craft lovers! As the proud owner of Happy Paws and a lifelong animal lover, I've always believed in the magic of handmade toys. There's something incredibly special about crafting a toy with your own hands and watching your feline friend enjoy it. It saves you a trip to the pet store and allows you to upcycle materials you already have, making it an eco-friendly choice.

Cats are naturally curious creatures. They're drawn to movement, textures, and sounds. This makes them the perfect audience for a variety of DIY toys. The possibilities are endless, whether it's a crinkly paper ball, a feather wand, or a string toy!

Here's a simple DIY cat toy idea to get you started:

1. Materials: Old t-shirt strips, a small bell, and a stick.
2. Steps:
* Cut the t-shirt into long strips.
* Tie the strips to one end of the stick, ensuring they dangle down.
* Attach the bell to the end of one of the strips.
* Voilà! You have a homemade cat wand.

The beauty of DIY is that you can customize the toy to your cat's preferences. If they love catnip, sprinkle some in. If they're drawn to shiny objects, add a little foil. The key is to observe what your cat enjoys and incorporate that into your creation.

Beyond the fun and creativity, crafting DIY toys is a fantastic bonding activity. It allows you to spend quality time with your pet, understanding their likes and dislikes. Plus, there's an immense satisfaction in watching your cat play with something you made just for them.

So, to all the crafty cat owners, I challenge you to unleash your creativity. Dive into the DIY world and craft a unique toy your feline friend will cherish. And when you do, remember to share your creations with us!

Unlocking the World of Interactive Play: The Benefits and Top Picks for Your Furry Companion

As a passionate pet lover and proud owner of Happy Paws, I've seen firsthand the joy and excitement that interactive toys bring to our four-legged friends. But beyond the evident fun, these toys play a crucial role in their mental and physical well-being. Whether it's a puzzle toy that challenges their intellect or a tug toy that gives them a good physical workout, interactive toys are more than just playthings. They're tools that stimulate, engage, and enrich our pets' lives.

If you've ever watched your dog or cat play, you'll notice that they're not just mindlessly chewing or batting around. They're thinking, strategizing, and problem-solving. This cognitive stimulation is vital, especially for breeds known for their intelligence and energy. Without proper mental engagement, these pets can become anxious, destructive, or even depressed.

So, what makes a toy "interactive"? Essentially, any toy makes your pet think or work for a reward. It could be a treat-dispensing puzzle, a toy that mimics the movement of prey, or even a simple ball that bounces unpredictably. The key is that it challenges them in some way.

Now, for those of you on the hunt for the perfect interactive toy, here are some of our top picks:

1. Treat-Dispensing Balls: These are great for dogs that love to chew. They get a fun challenge and a tasty reward!
2. Feather Wands: Perfect for cats, these toys tap into their natural hunting instincts.
3. Tug Toys: Ideal for physical play and training and are also great for bonding with your pet.
4. Laser Pointers: While more commonly used with cats, many dogs also enjoy chasing that elusive red dot.
5. Puzzle Feeders: These toys entertain and slow down fast eaters, promoting better digestion.

Remember, the best toy for your pet is safe and suitable for their size, age, and temperament. Always supervise playtime, especially when introducing a new toy.

So, the next time you see your pet playing, know they're not just having fun. They're exercising their body and mind, staying happy, healthy, and engaged. And isn't that what we all want for our furry friends?

Allergies can be a challenge, but they shouldn't prevent you from enjoying the company of a pet. There are several hypoallergenic dog and cat breeds that produce fewer allergens. Additionally, animals like reptiles or fish can be excellent choices for those sensitive to fur or dander. Regular grooming and cleaning can further help in keeping allergens at bay. Decoding the Pet Diet: What's on the Menu for Fido and Whiskers?

We've all been there - those pleading eyes staring up at us as we enjoy our meal, making it almost impossible to resist sharing a bite. But when it comes to our pets, not all human foods are created equal. While some can be harmless or even beneficial, others can pose serious health risks.

For instance, while lean meats, certain vegetables, and fruits like apples (without seeds) can be a delightful treat for many pets, foods like chocolate, grapes, and onions can be toxic. It's essential to be informed and cautious.

Here are some quick guidelines:

Safe in Moderation: Cooked lean meats, carrots, blueberries, and plain rice.
Proceed with Caution: Dairy products can be hard for some pets to digest, and nuts like almonds can pose choking hazards.
Absolutely Avoid Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and foods sweetened with xylitol.

Before introducing any new food into your pet's diet, it's always a good idea to consult your veterinarian. They can provide guidance tailored to your pet's specific needs and health conditions. Remember, a well-informed pet parent leads to a happier and healthier pet life. 🍎🚫🍫

The Cat-Dog Conundrum: Building Bridges in a Multi-Pet Household

The age-old question: Can cats and dogs truly get along? While cartoons and folklore might paint a picture of eternal rivalry, the reality is far more nuanced. Our feline and canine companions can coexist with the right environment and understanding and form deep, affectionate bonds.

The first step is understanding each pet's personality, temperaments, and history. Some dogs have a higher prey drive, while some cats might be more territorial. But we can set the stage for a harmonious relationship with patience and gradual introductions.

Key tips include:

Slow Introductions: Let them get used to each other's scent before a face-to-face meeting.
Supervised Play: Watch their interactions and step in if play gets too rough or one pet seems scared.
Safe Spaces: Ensure cats have places they can retreat to if they need a break from their canine counterpart.

Over time, with trust and mutual respect, many cats and dogs tolerate each other and become inseparable pals, often seen cuddling or playing together. So, if you're considering adding a new furry member to your household or are navigating the cat-dog dynamic, remember that peace is possible with love, understanding, and guidance. 🐶❤️🐱

The Joy of Feline Play: Keeping Your Cat Energized and Engaged

With their agile movements and sharp reflexes, cats are natural hunters and players. Whether it's a moving object's shadow or a dangling string's allure, their instinct to pounce and play is undeniable. But how do we ensure our indoor feline friends get the necessary exercise and stimulation?

Laser pointers, often a favourite among cats, tap into their predatory instincts, making them chase and jump to "catch" the elusive red dot. But there's more to feline play than just lasers. Interactive toys, like feather wands or motorized mice, can mimic the movement of natural prey, providing both physical exercise and mental stimulation. And remember the simple joy of a cardboard box, which can become a hideout, a hunting ground, or a scratching post.

Regular play sessions help keep your cat in great shape and strengthen the bond between you two. It's a time of connection, understanding, and sheer fun. So, let's embrace the world of feline play and ensure our cats remain active, engaged, and happy! 🐈

Indoor Adventures: Keeping Your Feline Friend Active and Engaged

While our feline friends might be known for their leisurely stretches and long naps in sunlit corners, they also have a playful and curious side that craves stimulation and activity. Especially for indoor cats, finding innovative ways to keep them active is crucial for their physical and mental well-being.

From interactive toys that mimic the movement of prey to climbing structures that allow them to reach new heights, there's a world of possibilities to explore. Consider setting up a "cat obstacle course" with tunnels and platforms or introduce puzzle feeders that challenge their intellect while rewarding them with treats. Even simple activities, like a game of "chase the laser pointer" or introducing new scents and textures, can provide hours of entertainment.

Remember, an active cat is not only a healthier one but also a happier one. By ensuring they have ample opportunities for play and exploration, you're nurturing their instincts and providing them with the enriching environment they deserve. 🐱
