My Personal Story
I have been coming to Bali for many years. And during my visits I have always helped the dogs mostly feeding them on the streets and the beach. Two years ago I was here for 2 months on another journey. During this time I found a dog on the beach. I named her Turtle Dog. She was so skinny dehydrated, hungry and very tired. I was sitting with a group of Surfing guys that teach surfing..to the visitors. They named there boards Turtle . So this is how I arrived at the name TURTLE DOG. She was laying under my beach lounge. Trying to rest and get some shade. I asked the turtle gang .. thats the name I gave them. Please can you get me some water for the dog! They were a bit surprised by my request . I said I need to give this dog some fresh water please. The response was, dog beach dog she just laying around wants food. Then one of the turtle gang said to me. I tried to feed her a few days ago and she would not eat. My response was very quick. And explained that she needs water first. She cannot drink the salty water. She is already dehydrated. Its not fresh water. So, they gave me a bottle of water. And I slowly poured it into my hands and stoked her mouth. She was very thirsty. She drank and drank it slowly. After a little while she feel asleep under my lounge chair. I think for a few hours. It was becoming busy as most visitors love the sunset. A lady came along selling Nasi goring and her special fried rice. So I bought some for the turtle gang my friends a meal and for Turtle dog. The next day I came back to the same spot always later in the afternoon. And she was there laying in the hot sun away from people . So I already new she had been shunned away. Because people don't want a dog laying under the bed.. And she was laying in sun on the hot sand. This is how it is here. Of course people are here for a rest a holiday.. They really do not want any distractions.
I spoke to the Turtle Gang asked for my regular spot and settled myself. I called her Turtle dog come. And she did. She placed herself under my chair I said hello beautiful Turtle dog its ok you can rest here with me. She went to sleep straight away. I asked the for water again and did they have a bowl or something to put the water in. Of course the answer was no we do not have this Ibu. When she woke. I helped her drink from my hand once again. The lady selling her food had run out. So I went for a walk and found another lady selling nasi again. I asked for more egg please. Once again I helped to feed her. She was not really hungry as she was so exhausted however I managed to slowly feed her.
So over the time I was there she would come late afternoon and we would eat and drink together. We became good friends. And she new she was safe and could rest in the shade with me. Her energy improves and I started to see her gentle personality. I asked a friend if they could help me find a large plastic bowl to put water in and I wanted to write her name on it. So this could be her own water bowl. I am so lucky to have a beautiful friend here Cinnamon. She dropped of the bowl and texted pens at my room while I was away. A wonderful surprise!
So the next day I returned to the beach and she had her bowl.. I called her and she came to me immediately. Drank and enjoy her fresh water. She always came to my spot and lay under the bed. I asked one of the Turtle gang to take me to a pet shop so I could buy food for her. I was leaving soon and I wanted her to be looked after.. she did come back a couple of times. But in the end she totally disappeared after I left. I would write and ask if they had seen her. The response was always NO.
