Animal Backs provides a hands-on, complementary approach to maintaining the optimum health, soundness and performance of your animal using Equine Sports Massage & McTimoney chiropractic techniques. About the Therapist:

I have been a fully qualified McTimoney Animal Chiropractor since 2006 treating horses and dogs. In 2010 I qualified as an Equine Body Workerยฎ which I completed through Equinenergy

Ltd. This qualification allows me to use Equine Sports Massage and Trigger Point Therapy which I find very beneficial to the horses I treat, particularly when used alongside the McTimoney treatment. Animal Backs uses a holistic approach, treating the body as a whole not just one specific area. The techniques used are gentle and effective adjustments working with the surrounding muscles of an affected area. The treatment aims to rebalance, realign and restore biomechanical and neurological function. The philosophy underpinning McTimoney and massage is that when the animal's body is functioning correctly it is able to restore health, maintain soundness and improve performance. When does my animal need treatment? Animals are very good at hiding or masking discomfort and sometimes only show a very slight change in behaviour which is often attributed to naughtiness. Treatment should be considered if your animal displays any of the following signs:

Horses -

o Change or drop in performance
o Uneven wear of shoes or hooves
o Uneven, irregular action
o Discomfort when tacked up
o Stiffness
o Unlevelness, especially behind
o Cold or sore back
o Unexplained napping, rearing or bucking
o Refusing fences
o Sensitivity to touch, spasms in muscles

Dogs -

o Limb dragging
o Stiffness
o Irregular action
o Difficulty getting upstairs
o Difficulty getting into and out of the car
o Pain or reluctance to exercise
o Drop in performance
o Slowing down

McTimoney chiropractic and Equine Sports Massage Treatment:

The demands placed on animals have increased, with different disciplines putting added stresses and strains on the animal's musculoskeletal system. These can result in muscle spasm and misalignments of the spinal column resulting in pain and discomfort in the back and other areas of the body. Pain and discomfort can prevent the animal from working at their optimum level and even prevent them from carrying out normal day-to-day activities. It is essential to know when to seek help to ensure your animal does not suffer for long periods of time. Veterinary Permission:

Before treatment is carried out veterinary consent must be obtained from your veterinary surgeon. This is a requirement under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. It is also important to understand that McTimoney animal manipulation is not a substitute for veterinary treatment and should Chloe feel it necessary she will refer the animal back to the vet. The vast majority of vets are aware of the benefits of complementary therapies for animals and are willing to give permission for a treatment. Animal Backs will not treat any lame or ill animal and, in these cases, the animal will be referred back to the vet. Contact Details:

Please contact Animal Backs to discuss a particular problem or to arrange an appointment. Chloe Williams BSc (Hons), PG Dip AM, EBWยฎ

*Please note Chloe does not answer her phone while she is treating therefore please leave a message and she will contact you as soon as possible.

Friday Fact - Flexion at the poll

In the ridden horse, flexion at the poll is important as anatomically it allows him to develop correct posture, alignment and straightness.

Both extension and over-flexion are undesirable and inhibit your horse's movement.

LONGITUDINAL FLEXION - where the poll area softens and your horse accepts the bit, allowing his nose to come nearer the vertical.

LATERAL FLEXION - your horse turns his head to the left or right with his nose remaining on the vertical.

Flexion can only be achieved if your horse is ridden softly. Hard, rigid hands cause muscles around the poll to tighten, inhibiting movment and creating tension.

Turns, loops, circles, figures of eight and serpentines are all great exercises to incorporate into your horse's training.

Combine them together and you have an infinite number of beneficial bending exercises.

1. Begin with shallow loops and large circles to promote balance, suppleness and accuracy.
2. Progress to tighter turns, smaller diameters and exercises that require more changes of bend as your horse becomes stronger and more flexible.
3. The intensity of all these bending exercises can be increased by varying the gait, degree of collection, speed and tempo.

Horses inside out has some great info, including different stretching techniques that can help your horse.

Your horse's tail is an extension of his spine.

Using tail exercises not only affects the tail itself but also the spine all the way forward, including the back.

Tail exercises can :-
๐ŸŽ Stretch the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues within the spine
๐ŸŽ Help influence the horse's balance and centre of mass, stimulating recruitment of core postural muscles
๐ŸŽ Encourage relaxation within the spine
๐ŸŽ Help with realignment of the spine
๐ŸŽ Influence nervous system connections

For tips and exercises to do with your own horse watch the FREE Tail Exercises tutorial video available in the HIO Academy* - visit www.horsesinsideout.com/academy
