Fairfield Kennels is looking to hire a part-time staff member. Days are Saturday and Sunday with possible relief on other days. It is split shift days of approx. 8am-11am and 3pm-5:30pm. Must love dogs/cats and their owners! Cleaning, feeding, watering, walking and taking customer payments would be your main tasks. Must have own transportation as we are not on a transit route. Internship at Miellie Meadows

This position is offered to individuals looking to learn all there is to know about horse care with the benefits of receiving lessons from Berber DeVries, Miellie Meadows manager and trainer, to improve their riding skills and horsemanship. Berber focuses on natural horsemanship through groundwork, confidence building and retraining with a background in classical dressage.

The Learning Schedule:

The average day for the working students is from 8:00am until 4:00pm (with breaks throughout the day).

There is an option for a part-time day so please reach out if you are interested in that!

Each day begins with feeding and mucking stalls. Once the morning chores have been completed, the student will assist our coaches with tacking, warming up, and training our horses. Afternoon feeding is required as well along with standard barn chores throughout the day.

Internship Perks:

You will be provided with the opportunity to work with and/or ride a horse each day. In addition, you will be provided with an official riding lesson from one of our coaches weekly (after your working student hours). In your spare time, there are other opportunities to ride so that you can practice and consolidate your newly learned skills. If you bring your own horse, you will get a discounted rate on board, training and additional lessons from the weekly lesson provided (after work hours).

Once you have established a working relationship with Miellie Meadows and have had sufficient lessons and experience with the team an opportunity to learn how to teach beginner lessons can be offered if interested and capable. Working students can also learn how to properly barefoot trim horses while at Miellie Meadows.

Requirements:

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual looking to improve their riding and learning all there is to know about horse care. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about horses and who have good organizational skills. Hard working, energetic, polite, kind and a positive attitude will be a huge asset to the working student chosen for the position.

Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge’s Cadillac “Dog Wagons”

Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge was an animal lover and she founded the Morris & Essex Kennel Club.

Her “Dog Wagons” were built on extended 1939 Cadillac “Sixty Special” chassis. The two cars, six and eight door limousines, fitted with coachwork by an unknown maker, were used to transport her show dogs.

It is a special Cadillac with a 200-inch wheelbase; the interior has ample accommodations for eight dogs to ride in comfort. The cages are made of duralumin and built as part of the car although they are removable if it is desired to take them out.

How the Kong ball was invented.

The Kong toy was invented by accident more than 40 years ago when Joe Markham needed a way to prevent his German Shepherd Fritz from biting on rocks and sticks. Fritz, who Markham adopted as a shelter dog, had worn down his teeth to one-third of the size they should have been.

He was working on his vehicle and tossed an axle stop with an attached bracket on the ground. His dog got hold of it and loved it. He was playing with it joyously, much to Markham’s amusement.

He said to his friend, “What do you think of my new dog toy?”

His friend replied, “Actually, it’s not too pretty. It looks like an earplug from King Kong.”

And the Kong toy was born☝😉

This handsome fella came into our centre as a stray after being held over night by a Good Samaritan. He was found running around valley fair mall in Maple Ridge. He’s a neutered male and had a jacket on with his name “Bane,” but no permanent ID..

If this is your dog, or you know who their owner is, please give the shelter a call at 604-463-9511. Proof of ownership and valid ID over 19 years. Great idea to bring a leash at pickup.
