December Daily Tips - Day 24 - Adapt your environment. Look at the lovely Cleo - she is so happy she is smiling! She's 14 and doesn't feel a day over 8! She has suspected arthritis and has sustained some muscular injuries, too. Her owners have adapted their environment to help her out, and the results have been amazing. Big rugs and mats around anything she might jump or fall off. They now use a buggy for longer walks so she can still enjoy being out with the family. She's a real joy to work with ❤️ 🎄

December Daily Tips - Day 23 - Performance changes, especially if your dog competes.
If your dog is a working dog or competes at agility or flyball, then dips in normal performance could be a pointer that something is wrong. Pole knocking, wide turns on one side or a change in stride length or pattern are indicators. Monty here was missing weaves. A quick muscle check showed he had tight back muscles, and during his massage, it became apparent that he had restricted range of movement in his left forelimb. We are working on lengthening out those muscles so he can leep on winning! 🏆

December Daily Tips - Day 22 - Your dogs 'tickle spots' are not funny! These are a sign of adhered fascia and myofascial pain.
Fascia is a connective Web that covers everything in the body. It helps with slide and glide of muscles and other body components. If it gets jammed or stuck in an area - it can cause a response in another area - hence the scratching or stamping reaction.
Massage can help unstick adhesions and fascia, resulting in a less of a reaction going forward. It takes time to do this. Lion here has some undiagnosed skin/scratching issues but also has adhered tissues on the sides of his body, which cause him to scratch when touched there.

December Daily Tips - Day 21 - Food - your dogs are what they eat. There is no doubt that raw food is the best food for your dog, but there are some reasons why you might not feed raw. Whatever you do feed your dog, make sure it is nutritional and your dog has a balanced diet with plenty of veggies and even some fruit. Carrots after a meal are great for their teeth and blueberries are good too! Jasper decided that he no longer wanted wet cooked food and stopped eating until his owner changed to raw! Got to love him ❤️.

December Daily Tips - Day 20 - You can use heat on your dog. Be careful that it isn't too hot though - you should be able to hold it against your cheek with no problems for up to 10 seconds. Heat can help with sore muscles and pain associated with arthritis. Jin here enjoyed some heat therapy on his shoulder. I use heat a lot and I used it before I released his shoulder as he had some adhesions there, and heat helped to relax the muscles and tissues in the area. He hasn't looked back since and is trotting around lame free and happy these days 😀.

December Daily Tips - Day 19 - Try to make jumping on and off furniture easier or minimise it as much as possible. If your dog is constantly jumping on and off surfaces higher than its shoulders, this can lead to degeneration in the joints over time. This is a particular problem with small dogs. There are plenty of products available to minimise the impact - stairs/ramps/footstools and always remember a rug on the floor at the preferred take off and jump down points!

December Daily Tips - Day 18 - Keep your dog at the right weight. Extra weight can put extra pressure on your dogs joints and internal organs and have a negative effect on their activities of daily living. We all love our dogs, and we shouldn't have them if we can't spoil them, but we need to refrain from allowing them to become overweight as we all know, once that weight is on its hard to get off. Bear had to lose some weight before surgery, which is another reason to keep your dog trim :).

December Daily Tips - Day 17 - Rehabilitation of injuries. Whether this is after surgery or using the conservative approach - Rehab is really important and shouldn't be rushed. If it's done right, your dog will end up in a good place. This might include crate rest, lead walks, exercises, and massage. Ted here had a cruciate ligament sprain, and after seeing the physiotherapist, he came for massage therapy and then onto hydrotherapy. Rehab can and often is a multi-modal approach.

December Daily Tips - Day 16. Warm your dog up before activity (cool them down, too!). Dogs are just like us and need a warm-up and a cool down before getting into fast or strenuous activity. Miles competes at agility, and it's really important for sporting and working dogs to warm up and cool down - mentally and physically. Just implementing this, and regular massage, of course, will reduce your dogs liklihood of injury.

December Daily Tips - Day 15. Minimise your dog jumping up. Really common with small dogs like Alfie - they want to get closer to the action, and some of us find it difficult to bend all the way down 😂. There is always the human element and dog size to consider - try to avoid dogs 'dancing' or balancing on their back legs. This can cause strains in the gluteal muscles and overextension of the hip joint.

December Daily Tips - Day 14. Find a well fitting Y shaped harness. Harnesses should be Y shaped and come down the centre of the chest. This allows independent shoulder movement. Any harness that comes across the front of the body will, over time, shorten your dogs stride and affect their range of movement.

December Daily Tip - Day 13. Enrichment is really important for your dogs mental and physical well-being. It's good for you too ☺️.
This is Chester showing us what he is made of. His owner, Charlotte, keeps him busy with interesting things to do to keep his brain and body active. She also keeps herself busy by taking and editing pretty good photos!
I see Chester as and when to keep him bouncing !

December Daily Tips - Day 12 - Check your dogs bedding. Bedding should allow your dog to stretch out with straight legs. Curved plastic beds mean that the dog has to constantly curl up on their joints, which can cause long-term damage and issues with soft tissues and muscles. Flash has lovely flat beds that his owners Cathy & Shaun have put in various locations around the house, allowing his limbs to extend, which he needs to help with his arthritis.

Daily Tip December - Day 10 - You know your dog. If there is something off or not quite right with your dog, do something about it. Cath, Lunas' owner, is very tuned into her dog and knows when she is not on top form and/or in pain so she makes an appointment for a massage session and we work with Luna to help her get back to her normal, bus watching self 😀

Daily Tip December - Day 9 - Help your dog in and out of the car, whatever that means. Jumping into a high boot can be a struggle for some dogs like Buddy, so it's important to help them with that like his owners David and Hazel have. Whether it be a boost up on the back end, a lift up, or a ramp. It's important not to allow your dog to keep injuring themselves doing the same thing badly. Once that is sorted massage can help relieve the tension and pain in the muscles.

December Daily Tip - Day 8. Bin the ball launcher or use it wisely - not too far and not on slopes. Repetitive chase games at high speed don't do your dogs' joints any favours and accidents at high speed can cause serious injuries. Massage can help with rehabbing those injuries, but it would be better if they didn't happen in the first place 😀.
Poppy is here just because - she enjoys a chase game but her owners have stopped that to keep her healthier for longer ❤️

December Daily Tip Day 6 - Give it time! Some injuries or conditions take some time to heal so giving your dog a break from normal daily activities can help them recover and regain their spark. Sammi has luxating patella and just stopped at agility one day. After regular massages and a break from anything that might put pressure on her hind leg, she has regained her zest for agility and is doing great!

December Daily Tip - Day 5. Rugs, rugs, rugs. Can't say this enough. If you have laminate flooring, put rugs down so your dog can grip and not slide on their tip toes, causing serious injuries to their chest and shoulders. Jo has rugs on Freddies favoured routes around the kitchen to keep him safe, especially as he has some weakness in his hind limbs. Massage has definitely perked Freddie up and we are on monthly sessions to help with pain, muscle tone and freeing up any stiffness he might have.
