Evacuating with dogs: Lessons from the Crozier Fire

This past week, we found ourselves facing a sudden evacuation warning due to the Crozier fire, which was burning just two miles from our home. At 1:30 a.m., we were jolted awake by a call from a friend, followed by the blaring sirens of the sheriff's vehicles and loudspeakers instructing neighbors to evacuate. The fear and urgency of the situation were overwhelming, not just for us, but also for dogs.

As I write this, I’m reminded of the chaos and confusion that can accompany such an emergency, and I want to share our experience in hopes that it may help others who might find themselves in a similar situation. During the evacuation, I kept an eye on our community chat for updates and information about the fire. Sadly, in the midst of that, I saw countless posts from people whose dogs and animals had run away due to accidents being made due to fear, stress, or anxiety.

In moments of high stress, dogs can behave unpredictably. However, if you truly know your dog and understand their triggers, you can better anticipate their reactions and take steps to manage their behavior. For instance, in our case, I know that stress can quickly escalate into conflict among my pack of American Bulldogs. Recognizing this, our immediate response was to leash all of our dogs—including the board-and-train dogs we were responsible for—and secure them in their kennels with locked doors until we had to leave. This simple yet crucial step ensured that they were safe and contained, reducing the risk of any accidents caused by heightened anxiety.

Being proactive in this way not only protected our dogs but also allowed us to stay focused during a very stressful time. With the dogs secured, we were able to gather our important belongings, set up travel crates, and prepare for a safe evacuation. When it was time to leave, we calmly led each dog, one by one, from their kennel to their individual travel crate. This methodical approach prevented any panic-driven escapes, fights, or incidents of aggression between the dogs or toward people.

As I reflect on the events of that night, my heart aches for those who have lost their pets during the chaos of evacuation. The thought of being forced to leave a dog behind or losing them in the midst of an emergency is unimaginable. My deepest sympathies go out to all who are experiencing this heartache, and I sincerely hope they are able to reunite with their dogs soon.

This experience has reinforced the importance of being prepared for emergencies, especially when you have animals in your care. If there’s one takeaway from our story, it’s that a little preparation can make all the difference when disaster strikes. Take the time to think about your evacuation plan, know your dogs’ behaviors and triggers, and have a strategy in place to keep them safe.

Meet Gator, the French bulldog! He arrived with social aggression and reactivity issues, but after nearly 2 weeks of training with us, he's transformed. Clear and positive training methods allow you to build a solid foundation with your puppy quickly! I am only 4 days into Kai's training and 2 into Scout's. There has been a lot of progress in a very short time. I'm excited to see where they both are by the time we are finished with their training.

When Scout and Kai came out of the kennel for their morning training session they were full of excitement and energy to work.

Max is a young strong, pushy and rambunctious boy with a ton of prey drive. Unfortunately dogs like Max can be hard to own, handle and train if you are not experienced working with these types of dogs.

But, Max is the kind of dog who puts 100% into his work. He is constantly trying new things and learns extremely fast. This makes working with him exciting and fun!!

I'm super proud of his progress in such a short amount of time. Max has accomplished all his owners training goals plus some, within a 2 week board and train program.

Wow this is Incredible. Never give up hope!

The “HOPE” Experiment :

During a brutal study at Harvard in the 1950s, Dr. Curt Richter placed rats in a pool of water to test how long they could tread water.

On average they'd give up and sink after 15 minutes.

But right before they gave up due to exhaustion, the researchers would pluck them out, dry them off, let them rest for a few minutes - and put them back in for a second round.

In this second try - how long do you think they lasted?

Remember - they had just swam until failure only a few short minutes ago...

How long do you think?

Another 15 minutes?

10 minutes?

5 minutes?

No!

60 hours!

That's not an error.

That's right! 60 hours of swimming.

The conclusion drawn was that since the rats BELIEVED that they would eventually be rescued, they could push their bodies way past what they previously thought impossible.

I will leave you with this thought:

If hope can cause exhausted rats to swim for that long, what could a belief in yourself and your abilities, do for you?

Remember what you’re capable of. Remember why you’re here.

Keep swimming.
