Whiz was adopted on Saturday by Greg! Happy swimming Whiz.

We got a puppy over the weekend so I’ll be a little preoccupied this week with puppy chaos on top of my usual chaos so rescue stuff will slow down a little bit. But not to worry, MKE Betta Rescue will still be up and running and taking in bettas 🥰

Update: A community member did reach out yesterday to Aquatics Unlimited and spoke to someone. They said they are having problems with their betta distributor and they said they have pulled all the sick bettas off the shelf to medicate and quarantine them. I’m hopeful that is true but I will be following up and monitoring the situation.

This is how Aquatics Unlimited in Greenfield keeps their bettas. I’m actually appalled. I’ve never seen so many fish in this kind of condition. They really should be embarrassed for themselves. And selling these at full price?! 75% of them had fin rot. Some so severe, they barely had any fins left. A few were floating, some dying. I asked the girl that was helping me why they looked so bad and she didn’t really know. If anyone ever stops in there, PLEASE express your concern to the management or whoever is working. Sadly, we have to be their voice sometimes.

Phoebe was a part of my failed sorority tank attempt. She has been adopted by Farrah and is now living her best life with no other female bettas 😂 Reminder that even very experienced betta keepers struggle with sorority betta tanks. Happy swimming Phoebe!

Sprite was adopted yesterday by Jessica! He made a fantastic recovery and is going to have quite a glow up. He even has a neat lookout tower in his new domicile. Thank you so much Jessica and happy swimming Sprite!!!

Sprite 🤩 This is one of the prettiest bettas I’ve ever seen. He’s a double tail and his color is white but iridescent and looks lavender in some lights. He came to me with swim bladder, floating on his side and he’s all ready to go now! Message me if interested.

Lucy was adopted today by Karen! When I saw her in the store, she was floating vertically. When I got her home, she wasn’t able to remain buoyant and was dragging her tail around. By day two she was swimming around like nothing happened! Congrats Lucy, you’re in great hands. Thanks for adopting Karen, I appreciate you!

It’s been awhile but I finally got some new intakes! All 3 are dealing with some kind of swim bladder dysfunction but I’m pretty hopeful they’ll recover just fine. Once they are ready for adoption, I’ll post them here first but if you see one you like, feel free to message me for first dibs 👍

Smokey the mustard gas betta is ready for his forever home. He has been with me for a LONG time getting the treatment he needed. He’s young and very active and would enjoy a well planted tank for his long fins. He’s missing a ventral fin so has some trouble turning around while swimming, but other than that, he’s quite healthy. Located in Milwaukee, no adoption fee.

Incredibly, this is the same fish 6 weeks later. Koa came from Meijer grocery store which has no business selling live animals. I wasn’t sure he was going to make it, he was incredibly underweight, breathing heavily, and his fins had rotted away. But some TLC, antibiotics, and live mosquito larvae got him strong and healthy like he was always meant to be.

Koa was adopted last night Lo, who has adopted 2 other bettas from me. I was thrilled to say goodbye to Koa, but I will also miss him. Thank you Lo and happy swimming Koa!

PS. I’ve slowed down with the rescue just a bit these last few weeks. I had 2 very sick bettas, one still recovering and one of my own bettas in treatment currently no I have no room. Hoping to get things ramped up again this fall. I really appreciate all of you who share posts, send supplies, and ADOPT. I could not do it without any of you ❤️

Koa is FINALLY ready for a forever home. Koa came to me in a grocery store cup and I had very low expectations that he would make it. But he did and he’s very active. He LOVES live food but he loves food in general and will eat anything. His fins look a bit rough but he barely even had any fins when I got him, so they’ve grown a whole bunch.

Flutter came to me as an owner surrender last week. After a few days of observation, he went to his new home today with a dear friend of mine, Loryn 😊 He will be her desk buddy at work. Happy swimming, Flutter!

Fezzik (FKA Vlad) went to his forever home with Aja this week. Aja snagged one of those awesome 9 gallon flex’s and carefully cycled it and planted it up so Fezzik will have plenty of space to swim and lots of cool hides and plants to explore. Congrats Fezzik and thank you Aja!
