🥶 COLD WEATHER & OUTDOOR CAT FEEDING 🥶

💙 It is best to mix adult food with kitten food in the winter. Kitten food is higher in calories and protein which will help them stay warmer.

💙 It takes cats more energy to break down and digest dry food than wet food. If possible, increase the feeding of wet food when it’s this cold. Personally, I increase wet food feedings all winter long, but I know that’s not an option financially for everyone. Wet food will help them be able to use their energy to stay warm versus wasting energy within the body to break down dry food.
Wet food will obviously freeze faster in these cold temps. Here are a couple options to help it from freezing as fast if all your ferals don’t come eat right away:
1. Use heated bowls that you can plug in.
2. Rubber bowls don’t get as cold as some other options. You can put one bowl inside another with hand warmers between the two bowls.
3. You can use a big chunk of styrofoam or foam board to make a “dish holder” that the bowl fits in snugly. This will keep the sides of the bowls insulated. For best results adding hand warmers between the foam and the bowl will keep the food warmer longer.
Reminder- When there is a lot of snow or it is absolutely frigid, you might not see them for a couple of days as they are hunkered down trying to stay warm.

💙 Be sure to still offer water in the winter!! A hydrated cat is a healthier cat! Of course the water will freeze faster, but you can use the same tricks mentioned above to keeping the wet food from freezing so fast.
