630 days… 🥺

October 2021, we made one of our frequent visits to animal control to transfer dogs into our care at Heal Animal Rescue.

We walked up to one of the pens, and found a beautiful brindle mix breed dog sitting quietly, looking up at us with soulful eyes. She was silently pleading with us to help her find a forever family. One look at her sweet face was all it took. We leashed her up, loaded her in our transport van, and soon began the process of finding her a forever family to love.

Fast forward to July of 2023, and Nina is still at our adoption center waiting for her special someone.

We love her dearly, but after 630 days of waiting what we would love more is for Nina to find her special someone to love unconditionally for the rest of her life.

Nina is a friendly girl, loves to go for walks, and is a food enthusiast. She can often be found sitting with a food bowl in her mouth, dreaming of the next meal that’s coming her way.

Nina’s forever family is one who has no other dogs or cats. She would be content to help keep you active and go on adventures with you, but would also love to be your cuddle buddy for an afternoon on the couch binging NetFlix.

If Nina sounds like the pup you’re meant to have in your life, please contact our adoption center! And, if you aren’t able to adopt currently, please share and help sweet Nina find a forever family.

Special thanks to Muir Photography for inviting Nina out for a special photo shoot this past week!

It is with a heavy heart that we share some difficult news regarding the future of Bow WOW! Mobile Bath and Grooming. After much consideration, we must inform you that we have made the incredibly difficult decision, after 9 plus years of being in business, to permanently close our doors effective June 23, 2023.

As you know, my sister Valerie has been single-handedly grooming our whole client base since I had both of my hips replaced in 2022. I continue to have physical challenges that prohibit me from jumping back into grooming. Likewise, Valerie’s physical challenges have become increasingly difficult to manage without daily pain and discomfort which has made it extremely challenging to sustain our operations. Valerie will be moving on to a new career path that will be kinder and gentler to her physically. While this closure is indeed disheartening, we want to assure you that we have explored every possible way to continue serving you. Unfortunately, we have determined that closing is the most responsible course of action for the well-being of everyone involved.

First and foremost, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and loyalty throughout our journey. Your patronage has been the driving force of our success, and we are incredibly grateful for the relationships we have built with each and every one of you. We truly love your pets as if they were our own and I cannot express how heartbroken we are to have made this difficult decision. It has been our honor to serve you and we will cherish the memories we have shared with you and your pets.

While I am actively seeking someone of integrity and quality grooms to take over the business, in the meantime, I will be forwarding your pets grooming notes for you to share with their future groomer. I will let you know if we are successful in finding a new owner in a timely manner.

We want to express our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience or disappointment caused by this closure. We will always remember the positive impact that you have had on our business. If you would like to share any thoughts, memories, or simply say goodbye, we would love to hear from you. If you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

We wish you all the best in your endeavors and hope our paths cross again in the future.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Shauna Caudill and Valerie DelVitto

Let’s talk about growling! A bit long but so very important!

Hi everyone and thank you for reading our “Behavior Tip Wednesday” post! Today we are going to talk about growling! There are many types of growls in dogs. NO dog should be disciplined/punished for growling—the growl should be recognized and addressed but never, ever train or take away a dog’s growl. It leaves them with what? You guessed it—a bite!! Taking away a growl is like removing the batteries from a smoke detector. No warning remains. Let them growl.

There are many types of growls. First, the play growl- we all know it! You are playing tug with your dog and they are having a blast and growling , verbalizing while they play! That’s not a concern unless it gets more intense when at that point you would want to take a break.

Next up, an affectionate growl - that rubbing feels so good it’s like purring. It’s typically low and sounds more like words than an actual growl. Body language would also be very soft.

Now we move to concerning growling - the fearful growl. Likely the most common. A fearful growl can happen when your dog perceives a threat, whether to itself, human or animal companions, its objects, like a toys/food or it feels its space is being invaded (like hugs!) This grown means “back off! I don’t like this!” The goal of this growl is to create distance from the threat! “Go away!”

The aggressive growl - the opposite of fearful growling. Where a fearful growl is trying to create distance an aggressive growl means they want to reduce distance and attack. Body language may be stiff, and you’ll likely see snarling and bared teeth. This will likely be accompanied by lunging. This can be very dangerous. Remove your dog from the area immediately and contact a good positive reinforcement trainer for help.

The “I’m in Pain” growl - Dogs may growl when they have an illness or injury that’s causing pain. You may notice this especially when you touch a certain body part or they may not want to be touched at all.
Trying to figure out what’s wrong on your own can cause further fear in your dog, so it’s best to get your dog to a vet. They’re growling to tell you something is wrong, and it’s your job to do the kind thing and help them.

As always know what your dog is saying. Their silent conversations with their bodies speak volumes. Learn their language and listen to it. (With these posts we will help you learn!) Praise and reward your dogs for desired and calm behavior. It all helps to have a healthy relationship with your dogs and that’s all we and the dogs want! 🐾♥️
