Exciting news!! Willow and Riptide should be having puppies mid October. This is the first time Willow has been paired with Riptide. We are super excited to see what beautiful color combos they produce.

My second past pup going home to his family after training. Riley has been in training to be a therapy dog. Thanks A2J Happy Tails K9 Training for doing such a wonderful job with my pups! It’s currently honeymoon week for Willow and Riptide. We are looking forward to mid October pups! 🥰🥰

Our Riley boy is back at the trainers to start his training as a service dog. Good words from his trainer A2J Happy Tails Dog Training and Boarding.

Amid Service Dog Training

Service dog training requires all participants in the dog’s life to become trainers on some level. Most often there is a period in a service dogs training life that the dog will go home for short periods of time to "work" in their own home environment. This is transitional training for the dog as well as the handler(s). This is where consistency plays a major role of how well the dog transitions in life from not just being a pet, but to a working service dog.

Having a consistent approach with solid training techniques yourself as the handler is essential for successful results. Dogs are not under the understanding that all rules apply everywhere, until we learn the proper techniques to apply the rules everywhere they are and every time in the same consistent fashion. This takes time and patience as both the handler and the dog are both in training.

Providing structure and a consistent routine in the dogs training and restructuring your own life creates a learning environment that the dogs can learn what is always expected in all situations. When a service dog "breaks a command" they are redirected with consistent correction until they no longer "break". So, when the dog goes home for a visit it is not intended to be a "break" in training because that breaks the consistency in the training hence setting the dog up for confusion.
They need the consistency in routine and training to remain focused and on task. This type of structured consistency also helps to create the strong bond between the handler and their canine companions as well.

When commands are clear and consistent in every situation from every handler, dogs understand that they have been asked to do a specific task which consistently encourages them to obey those requests and tasks more readily than if there is inconsistency and no clear structure.

The structured life and clear commands builds trust between the humans and their service dog in training. Though the instructions may be challenging, they know they can rely on us to provide reliable direction for them every time we ask something of them. Most importantly, having an established routine, in every scenario and situation during training the dogs will give both parties involved a sense of security since everybody knows exactly what is expected from one another without surprises or confusion along the way. The structured routine also creates a trust that when life does throw us a surprise, once again the trust is established, and most surprises are easily overcome.

So establishing a routine during home visits is part of the training for all concerned to promote positive behaviors and outcomes. By establishing a solid, consistent daily routine during home visits for the dog can be a very effective way to promote a positive foundation to support the dog and trainer, this benefits you and the success of your service dog. A well-structured and predictable schedule and environment will help the dog to understand what is expected of them, allowing them to to strengthen the habits that the trainer works at to continue to develop the good habits and gives the dog a strong foundation to continue to build upon.

A service dog in training is a life changing experience for the dog and the dog handler. Changes in routines and patterns, plus undergoing training and rebuilding your life to accommodate consistent training and learning at home for the success of the dogs training and the important relationship building of trust between the dog and the humans in their lives.
