Do you give your dog veggies? Here are some great tips.
My dogs love... cukes, frozen broccoli, and carrots!

Vegetables can be a great addition to your dog's diet if you stick to those that are safe and hand out an appropriate amount. So what vegetables can dogs eat?

July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month, and our pets and clients' pets rely on us to keep a full bowl and a hydrated body. The blazing sun of July requires us to amp up the hydration of ourselves, and remind our clients to do the same for their pets. As you know, pet dehydration can quickly take a turn for the worse, so be sure to remind your clients of the importance of this topic this month & every month.

⭐ Thunderstorm season is upon us, and firework season is fast approaching. Keep an eye on this page to learn how to help your pets stay safe and comfortable during this noisy time of year. ⭐

đŸŸ All animals need a place where they feel safe and can decompress. A safe zone is a special new area we'll create together for your dog. 🏠

🔇 The important aspects of the safe zone are that it provides a place that:

Avoids sensory overload đŸš«đŸ”Š
Relatively quiet đŸ€«
Minimizes smells/odors – if you can smell it (e.g., household cleaners), then it is likely overwhelming for the dog. đŸŒŹïž
Not too bright, no flashing lights, no shiny or reflective surfaces đŸš«đŸ’Ą
Creates predictability 🔄
This is your dog's space to get away from stressful stimuli đŸ¶
A place your dog can choose to go to if he or she wants a break from activity đŸŸ
Gives them quiet time to recover from stress (a key for developing resilience) đŸ’€
Minimizes talking, petting, or training đŸ™…â€â™‚ïžđŸ•

If you are going to have a dog, you are going to have to make sacrifices. You cannot expect to have an animal that was designed to live primarily outside and bring it into your house and not have to make changes or adjustments. A dog is not an ornament, a commodity or a display. A dog is an animal. You are sharing your life with another species. This is life with a dog.

Your yard will not be pristine. The grass will get burned from their p*e. Holes will be dug, bushes shredded, mud will come in the house. You cannot ask them to not p*e in your house and then also try to control even their outside bathroom. Please see how unfair this is. This is life with a dog.

You house will need management. Your counters will need to be clear. Shoes will need to be put away. Laundry room blocked. Kids toys picked up. Some things will get destroyed anyway. This is life with a dog.

They will bark at noises. They will protect their territory. Sometimes fiercely. They will not welcome strange people into the home easily even if you “know them” because this is in their genetic DNA. They don’t understand family gatherings and they don’t always see things the way we do. They won’t love playing with every dog they meet. This is life with a dog.

They will need enrichment and work and productivity. They will need training that is kind and fair and consistent and then maintenance to maintain that training. They will need guidance and coaching and lots of reinforcement to help them perform unnatural behaviors against their natural phenotypes. This is life with a dog.

They will mature and change and modify in their likes, behaviors and preferences as they age. Their behaviors aren’t guaranteed. They are not robots and they can be mercurial as they grow into their own personalities. They are allowed to change their mind and shift naturally just as we do. They need to be seen for what and who they are, not what and who YOU want. This is life with a dog.

Life with a dog is not a human right. It is a privilege and a responsibility and an education. They are animals and should be treated and expected to behave as such. That doesn’t make them any less loved or family members and it doesn’t make them any less deserving of respect, in fact it makes them more so.

Enjoy your life with a dog, and help them enjoy life with a human.

I can really relate!! Can you?

I can really relate!! Can you?

Things people say about their dogs that I can totally relate to.

“She really doesn’t like strange men approaching her”

Same.

“He hates being restrained”

Same.

“She’s super food motivated”

Same.

“When we go somewhere new with a lot of noise, he gets really anxious and wants to leave”

Same.

“If you touch her while she’s eating she gets really stiff and looks at me like she might growl”

Same.

“He doesn’t want to go to the bathroom outside when it’s raining”

Same.

“I can tell when I ask her to do something, she looks at me wondering if she’ll get a reward”

Same.

"He's fine with new people, but gets uncomfortable if they try to touch him"

Same.

“If she’s in the middle of doing something and distracted, and I ask her to come over to me, she doesn’t do it right away she finishes that and then maybe she’ll listen but I usually have to call her again”

Same.

Why are these behaviors that are so totally normal and understandable with humans and other animals not acceptable or “problems” with dogs? Why are we so quick to assume that just because we have dogs in our lives, that their personal preferences, individual personalities and also natural behaviors should just change simply because it’s more convenient for us? Seriously.

Maybe the first step is looking through a new lens. A lens of understanding and empathy and realizing dogs are the ONLY creatures on this earth we do this to
.. other than our kids but that’s a whole other can of worms. No one has ever called me in tears after trying to give their cat a bath and told me the cat didn’t like it hissed at them, and they don’t know what’s wrong with it - but I get calls like this for dogs all the time. It’s just assumed that dogs should and will tolerate what we expect and when they don’t, that’s a problem. But what if it isn’t? What if it’s just that dog? Why are we doing this to them? It’s making them crazy
. And making dog trainers even more crazy.

Take a step back. Look through a new lens. Behavior can be worked on, of course. But maybe it’s your behavior that has to change first, then we can talk about the dog.

Now, he has an alternative behavior to counter surfing and for guests entering the house!

There’s a lot of advice on Google and social media and while some of it seems to make sense, it can be incorrect information that is leading you in the wrong direction down your well intended path.

💔 It breaks my heart when a puppy client comes to me and their puppy is growling at them (and maybe even biting) because they were told to fiddle with their puppy by patting them, playing with their ears, sticking their hands in and out of their puppy’s food bowl, to take their puppy’s food away & give it back, and other “things” that are supposed to acclimate your puppy to be harassed.

⁉ For a human example, let’s say you’re enjoying a nice plate of food, but someone keeps coming by, sticking their hands in your plate, and taking your food away. How long are you going to tolerate that before you finally lash out and tell the person to stop? What if someone reached in your mouth to take away something you were enjoying? This would be annoying, and you would wonder what the heck was going on.
Imagine someone kept doing these things to you. Eventually, you would see someone coming and say “oh great, here they come again”. At what point will you take a stand and tell the person to back off?

⁉ This is what your puppy is doing. You mean well and your reason for wanting to do these things is valid. There is a way to show your puppy that being around them while they are eating and giving up their important items is fun and non-threatening.

The fireworks have already started in our neighborhood. đŸ˜”â€đŸ’«đŸ„ŽđŸŽ†đŸŽ‡đŸŽ†

We make our bedroom a safe space for our dogs by closing the windows, turning on the AC, turning on the TV, putting throw rugs and dog beds on the floors, along with giving the dogs tasty long lasting chews, and... at least one of us is in the room with them for comfort. đŸŸđŸŸđŸŸ
