Meet Star Student Ozzy the Cane Corso!

Ozzy was found as a stray in West Palm Beach, Florida at the age of 6 months old. He was caught by the Animal Control Officer and taken to a local shelter. Instead of turning him over to a rescue group, they adopted the large pup to a family with kids and elderly mother, all of whom have little knowledge of his breed. He’s a Cane Corso, and like most large breeds, needs training and someone with experience to handle their size. Within a month, Ozzy was returned to the shelter. The family said he tried to bite the mother. The shelter immediately put him on a 10 day hold to evaluate his behavior. He was at risk for euthanasia if he showed any sign of being a danger. All the shelter could see was an overgrown pup with no direction.
The shelter reached out to Cane Corso Rescue and was picked up by a dear friend from the Tampa area. Unfortunately, she needed shoulder surgery. Ozzy stayed with her for a week, and that entire time, she sent me pictures. All I could see was a goof ball. Typical Corso. I applied to foster him but was rejected due to the rescue having no knowledge of me. He instead went to a couple with 2 older Corsos. They soon found out that a non-trained Corso was too much for them. They reached out to the chair of the rescue, and that’s when I received the call.
If you want him, come get him now….
In true rescue form, the team assembled, and Ozzy found his was to Savannah where I saw him for the first time. So thin, and scared.
I slept on the floor with him for the first 2 months. I don’t think he had ever been inside a home full time, and he didn’t understand that the floor was not for potty. I treated him like a new pup. He slept beside me until I noticed he was confidently getting into his own bed, and at that time, I retreated to my own room.
We noticed he feared brooms, step ladders, shopping carts… if it moved, it was a threat.
Week one, I signed up with Love Me, Love My Dog. The first day we showed up, he acted out against a chair. I’m sure Margi thought that this dog was going to be a handful.
We showed up for every class. Every day we walked 2-3 miles together and went to Lowe’s every weekend to help him gain confidence around loud noises, people, and strange objects. He got to the point every employee knew his name and would shout it from across the store.
We passed Level 1. We worked for it!!! Every morning before work, and every night after work. He traveled with me to my mom’s house for 2 weeks and we continued with his exposure and training.
We started Level 2. Ozzy was a confident pup now. He gained enough mojo to climb on a stool and sit on a narrow step. More importantly, you could tell Ozzy trusted me. He passed again!
We go to TJ Maxx, Talbots, HomeGoods and Joann’s. He walks with a loose leash and loves to see kids approach him – he lays down so they can pet him at their level. He even gets an occasional belly rub.
We’ve started Level 3, and I couldn’t be prouder. He doesn’t question anything I ask him to do. He 100% trusts me to keep him safe and he knows I will never leave him. He is consistent and never falters. I am hoping he can pass his Therapy Dog test and show everyone that big dogs just equal bigger babies.

Transform Your Dog, One Lesson at a Time—Private Training, Lasting Results!"

Private dog training lessons are tailored to address specific behavioral challenges that dog owners may encounter in their homes. These challenges can include:

1. **Counter Surfing**: This refers to dogs jumping up on kitchen counters or tables in search of food or other interesting items. Private lessons can teach techniques to prevent this behavior, such as impulse control exercises and management strategies like keeping counters clear and rewarding the dog for staying on the floor.

2. **House Training**: House training involves teaching a dog to eliminate outside or in a designated indoor area. Private lessons can offer a customized approach based on the dog's age, breed, and any previous training attempts. Trainers can provide guidance on establishing a consistent routine, recognizing signs that the dog needs to go out, and handling accidents.

3. **Door Dashing**: Door dashing is when a dog bolts out the door whenever it's opened, which can be dangerous. In private lessons, trainers can work on teaching the dog to wait at the door until given permission to go outside. This might involve teaching commands like "stay" or "wait," along with reinforcing calm behavior at doorways.

4. **Company Greetings**: Some dogs get overly excited or anxious when guests arrive, leading to behaviors like jumping, barking, or rushing the door. Private lessons can focus on teaching the dog how to greet visitors calmly. This could include practicing sit or stay commands when the doorbell rings, or desensitization exercises to reduce the dog's excitement or anxiety.

5. **Crate Training**: Crate training helps dogs see their crate as a safe, comfortable space. A private trainer can assist in gradually acclimating a dog to the crate, ensuring they associate it with positive experiences. Lessons can also address issues like separation anxiety or whining when crated.

6. **Appropriate Interaction with Children in the Home**: Dogs and children need to learn how to interact safely and respectfully with one another. Private lessons can help dogs understand boundaries and appropriate behavior around children, while also teaching kids how to interact with the dog in a way that’s safe and respectful.

7. **Management in a Multi-Dog Household**: Living with multiple dogs can present unique challenges, such as resource guarding, competition, or conflict between dogs. A private trainer can help create a harmonious environment by teaching dogs to share space and resources, and by developing routines that minimize tension.

Overall, private lessons offer personalized training plans that address specific issues in a dog's behavior, helping to create a more harmonious home environment.

Build Bonds and Behaviors—Group Training for Happy, Social Dogs!

Obedience classes can provide significant benefits for both your dog and you as an owner. Here are some reasons why your dog might need obedience classes:

1. **Basic Commands**: Learning essential commands like sit, stay, come, and heel helps manage your dog’s behavior in everyday situations.
2. **Behavioral Issues**: If your dog exhibits problematic behaviors such as excessive barking, chewing, or jumping, obedience classes can help address and correct these issues.
3. **Socialization**: Classes offer a structured environment for your dog to interact with other dogs and people, helping to reduce fear or aggression.
4. **Safety**: Training helps ensure your dog responds reliably to commands, which is crucial for their safety in potentially dangerous situations.
5. **Mental Stimulation**: Obedience training provides mental challenges that keep your dog engaged and can reduce boredom and destructive behavior.
6. **Strengthening Bond**: Training together enhances the bond between you and your dog, improving communication and mutual understanding.
7. **Confidence Building**: Training helps build your dog’s confidence, especially in new or unfamiliar environments.
8. **Consistency**: Obedience classes offer a structured setting for consistent training, which can be harder to achieve at home.
9. **Exercise**: Classes often include physical activities, helping your dog to stay fit and burn off excess energy.
10. **Owner Skills**: You’ll learn effective training techniques and better ways to manage and understand your dog’s behavior.

Walking on Eggshells: The Stress of Managing a Reactive Dog"

Walking a reactive dog can significantly impact the owner in various ways:

1. **Stress and Anxiety**: Owners may feel stressed or anxious about encountering triggers during walks, leading to a tense and unenjoyable experience.

2. **Physical Strain**: Managing a reactive dog can be physically demanding, especially if the dog is strong and prone to lunging or pulling.

3. **Emotional Impact**: Owners may feel embarrassed or frustrated when their dog reacts aggressively or fearfully in public, affecting their confidence and enjoyment of walks.

4. **Social Isolation**: Fear of negative encounters can lead owners to avoid social situations, parks, or group walks, limiting both their and their dog's social interactions.

5. **Safety Concerns**: Worrying about the potential for their dog to harm others or themselves can make owners hyper-vigilant, impacting their sense of safety and relaxation.

6. **Time and Effort**: Managing a reactive dog often requires additional training, planning, and effort, which can be time-consuming and exhausting.

7. **Impact on Daily Routine**: Owners may need to adjust their walking times and routes to avoid triggers, complicating their daily schedules.

8. **Financial Strain**: The cost of professional training, specialized equipment, or behaviorists can be a financial burden.

9. **Relationship Strain**: Tension over handling the dog's behavior can strain relationships within the household or with other pet owners.

10. **Reduced Bonding**: The stress and challenges of managing reactivity can sometimes hinder the bonding experience between the owner and the dog.

If these sound like challenges you are facing, comment 😬 below for help!

OUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY

Love Me, Love My Dog Training is a positive reinforcement based training program. We believe in letting our dogs think for themselves and let them choose to work with us instead of using force to make them work for us. We believe this creates a stronger human-canine relationship. We use clicker training to capture behaviors that we want and reward with whatever the dog likes whether it be food, toys, praise, etc. From basic obedience training to training for competitive sports, we believe strongly in our methods with proven results!

BASIC TRAINING

Teams will learn basic cues and behaviors using a clicker, and proven positive reinforcement methods. Handlers will learn techniques to build a lifelong relationship with their dogs and ways to improve the team’s ability to work together.
