Saturday morning lessons ā¤ļø
Mocha went on his first bridleless trail ride yesterday! Iāve been behind on posting here. Reminder I have a few lesson spots available!
Comet has some feelings about getting his nose wiped! š¤£š¤£
Comet had a very soggy ride yesterday! Even with the crazy amount of rain we got, the ring was still perfectly useable š We got rained on even more, but he didnāt mind. I think living out makes the horses more tolerant of working in weather.
I am tentatively opening my schedule for a few more students. Riding and ground lessons available. Please message me to see if youād be a good fit! There may be the opportunity to show or half lease a horse for the right person. Pictured are a few of the lovely horses who canāt wait to meet you! I may also have some extra barn time grooming, lunging and caring for horses for the right person. Located in Lockport, NY.
A few highlights of Willow schooling at Lofty Heart Stables today! FB wonāt let me post multiple videos, screenshots it is. She was fab. Such an athletic, brave horse. Just need to tune up the brakes š¤£
Krystal and Comet in their lesson today š
Wrigley and I had a very nice trail ride yesterday and ran around by the pond a little! (His saddle looks a little funky from having just been cinched up - it settled normally once he walked)
PSA: your horse doesnāt like their stall. Nope, not even in bad weather. They just like the alternative less. If outside means no food, no friends, poor shelter, being too hot or cold, being bullied by other horses due to lack of resources, getting eaten up by bugs, or not getting grain that they know they get inside, of course they will choose inside. That doesnāt mean they want to be confined for hours. Stabling goes against all natural behaviors.
Willow jumped around at Lofty Heart Stables today for reserve champ and better rounds each time!
How many traditional trainers/horse keepers would get on their horse tackless for their first ride after over 4 months off? I bet none. Proof that proper management and training is key!
Wrigley started learning how to swap between trotting and gaiting. He picked the idea up super fast! Heās a smart little guy, sometimes too smart. š¤£
Willow had a successful first outing at the Opportunity Series today! She loaded perfectly, lunged quietly, and handled schooling chaos without issue. While she, like most green OTTBs, found waiting for her classes annoying, she enjoyed her jumping rounds (perhaps too much) and tolerated the flat class as well. Overall, Iām extremely impressed with her! When she came to me she didnāt know how to jump, now she knows and loves it less than 2 months later. Now to build the strength, experience and confidence she needs to slow down and use her body more.
Krystal and Comet yesterday! Comet is settling in nicely and has been a joy to have around. Photo credit Julie A Fallesen
Congrats Julie, Leah and Krystal on their new horse Comet! Him and Wrigley are already buddies.
My new mare, Willow, had her first tarp session yesterday. She took everything in stride, wearing it, walking on it and jumping over it! She impresses me every day with how well she thinks through everything.

Many might look at this video and say āwow, what a poorly behaved horseā āyou should really work on his mannersā. In the moment, I too said āMocha no! Youāre so bad!ā But heās not. Heās stressed. Heās a horse whose need for free movement (a basic need) isnāt being met. In this case, itās because of an injury. For many horses though, they live every day chronically stressed from confinement. How can we expect a horse to behave perfectly when their basic needs are not met? You wouldnāt expect a dog to be perfectly behaved if you locked it in a closet for 23 hours a day, and dogs donāt even need free movement as constantly as horses. Explosive, ābadā behavior is a response to stress. We, as an industry, need to stop expecting perfection from animals whose basic needs are being neglected.
I have decided that since Iāve seen how happy Mocha is in his stall, I no longer believe in turnout. Horses do not need to be outside at all! They are perfectly happy and healthy inside a box all day and night!!! Turnout and socialization are so overrated.
Stall rest sucks. I think most people see it from a āoh it sucks you canāt ride your horseā perspective, which is certainly part of it. I do miss riding this horse. Heās a joy to ride. But itās also seeing a horse confined to a box when they should be out with their herd. Knowing the stress and damage stalls cause and not being able to change it because heās injured. He spends 23 hours a day in that box. That should cause so, so much more worry than not being able to ride him. Itās hard to have to put him back in after barely an hour outside. He is being a very good sport about it, which does help, but that doesnāt change the fact that stalls have a major effect on a horseās physical and mental health. All I can do is try to make sure he has all the toys, hay and attention he can get.
Still ISO a unicorn for a client! That beginner friendly, been there done that horse who takes care of their rider. Low level dressage type, ability to jump small fences would be great too.

Wrigley was the star of the day today, yet again. Lunge lessons in the cold wind are no problem!
Wrigley was a superstar today! Leah trotted on him for the first time and Krystal practiced her two point and standing in the stirrups during her mini lesson. Julie hopped on for a few laps, too. Everyone did fabulous despite the drizzle and wind! It was a busy morning with the chiropractor out, then lessons and soon onto changing Mochaās bandage.
Still looking!

Cruz is making great progress! He allowed me to pick up his back feet with my hands without any issues! I use a rope first (soft cotton, just to stay out of kicking range), then once heās got that down try with my hands. Chief had a quick lunge and hung out with Mocha outside his stall for awhile. Mocha got a mirror so he can stare at himself. Heās always liked his reflection. He enjoys carrots and celery in his hay bags as well! Iāve gotten a bit behind this week and with the farrier coming today and having a bunch of horses to hold, I probably will be scrambling to catch up the last three days of the weekā¦ Mochaās injury has been very time consuming. I spend a lot of time entertaining him while Iām at the barn, teaching him tricks, giving him new toys, grooming him, etc. Yesterday I started target training him. He got it super fast!
Mocha got cast against the round bale feeder on saturday. While trying to free himself, he got his leg caught in the feeder. He has a cut from the top front of his hock, down the inside of his cannon bone to right above his pastern. Itās down to the bone at the top of his cannon bone, with a piece of bone gouged. He is on stall rest, tied so he cannot lay down. On the 27th he will get x-rays to see if thereās a fracture, since you canāt see a non displaced fracture right away. He is so far being a great sport about it all, Iām proud of him. Iāve been a complete wreck about it all, heās calmer than I am! Heās been much happier since I gave him his stuffed horsey. Iām very thankful for my barn family, who have all been so helpful and supportive, checking on me, checking on Mocha, and helping with all the things. We are doing everything we can to make this as easy as possible on Mocha.

I AM a horse trainer, behavior consultant, and horsemanship coach. But above all Iām a horse lover. And if youāre reading this, you probably are too. š“š
As a lover & caregiver of horses, I donāt need to know how to float my horses teeth, give injections, or trim their feet. I do however, need to:
ā”ļøWork together with a team of equine professionals to ensure the optimal health and wellness of my herd
ā”ļøKnow how to recognize a ājob well doneā in any of the above industries
ā”ļøChoose professionals that are kind, patient, and well-educated in their field
ā”ļøPrepare my horses in a positive way to make handling and care safe for all involved
ā”ļøClearly communicate my goals and expectations with my horseās wellness team
And more!
Hereās the thing:
āļøYou donāt have to learn how to do it all yourself āļø
BUt you have to learn enough to find the right professionals for your horse. Loving horses involves being their advocate and knowing how to recognize a job well done. š

So glad I didnāt listen to all the people who told me he ājust needs shoesā when he was having soundness issues a few months ago. Instead I fixed the problem and heās now back to being sound on all surfaces! -#horse #horses #equine #equines #dressage #jumpers #hunters #horsegirl #horsetrainer #horsetraining #sciencebasedhorsecare #ethicalhorsecare #ethicalhorsemanship #horsesofinstagram #horserider #explore #explorepage #reels #reelsvideo #like #comment
We had a trailer loading practice day today! All horses should be able to load well. You never know when you may need to relocate, haul to the vet, etc. Chief was a horse who would not load without multiple people and a lunge line around his bum. Today he loaded within a few minutes, using pressure and release and rewards. No chasing, no forcing, just understanding and patience while still being firm. It goes to show how much more well regulated and trainable he is now that heās been living out for over a year. The other 5 horses who partook in trailer day also did superb!
Obstacle courses are a great way to build confidence and body awareness, as well as changing things up to prevent boredom! Willow did it under saddle (well, under bareback pad, to be exact) and Comet tried it out on the ground. #horse #horses #equine #equines #horseriding #horsetraining #horsetrainer #sciencebasedhorsekeeping #sciencebasedtraining

Look at Wrigley go! Just a few short months ago, he did not know how to trot undersaddle, since heās gaited he only knew how to gait. We started with learning the vocal command ātrotā on the ground, then undersaddle. At first he could only manage a few fast, unbalanced strides. Now he is able to trot with a good rhythm for laps! #balancedtrainer #balancedtraining #horsetraining #horse #horses #explore
This is how backing a horse SHOULD look. No explosions, no fear, just a calm, well prepared horse. Many trainers will proudly post videos of them riding wildly bucking, stressed, fearful horses and call it ātrainingā. Thatās not training and itās not something to be proud of. Thatās flooding. It makes the first experience of being ridden a highly stressful, scary experience for the horse. Chip hasnāt had weight on his back in months, but since heās been prepared well, he isnāt concerned. Weāve been busy working on other things, such as steering from the ground, cross tying and desensitization, all things that will serve him well in his future career. #balancedtraining #babyhorse #ethicalhorsetraining #horse #horses #explore
Chip investigating the tarp today. When he started training with me he had very little confidence. He would go into a blind panic over anything potentially scary. Over the last few months, Iāve been working with him to help him gain the confidence to investigate instead of just exploding. He has gotten a lot better! He isnāt even 4 yet, so I never have huge expectations with him, just take things one step at a time at his pace. #balancedtraining #horse #horses #balancedtrainer #equine #equinewelfare #babyhorse #painthorse
Iām so proud of Chief. He cooled out bridleless today, his first time ever bridleless and he acted like an old pro. Heās come far, from ādangerousā, mostly feral and very green, to dependable and willing. He is by no means an easy ride, heās very sensitive and quirky, but I wouldnāt change a thing about him. He is a prime example of how much of a difference proper, ethical management and training make.
It doesnāt have to be so serious. Itās alright to just get on and have fun, you donāt always have to be working on something. Doing something you and your horse enjoy keeps riding and training interesting. So, ride bareback, go for a walk, just run around on the ground with your horse, have fun! Mocha enjoys having simple tackless rides. Just a light w/t/c (heās big on the canter!) and maybe pop over a little jump if heās lucky. Heās such a pleasant horse to ride, having a little jaunt around the arena with him is always a great time. #balancedtraining #horse #horses #equine #equestrian #explore #reels #explorepage #horsereels
Itās been nice to get to focus on my ponies the last few days. I love my client horses though, Iām excited to get back to work with everyone. Hereās a clip of Mocha during our little Christmas ride. #horsetraining #balancedtraining #horses #equine #sciencebasedhorsecare #ethicalhorsecare
Chief needed a refresher on ground tying. Itās been hard to get my horsesā groundwork in while juggling my ārealā job and client horses, but today I was able to do sessions with him and Mocha. I like to walk in a big circle around them while theyāre ground tied, it helps them get the idea that they are standing regardless of where I go. #horsetraining #balancedtraining #horses #equine
