🌸Common Chives 🌸are one of my favorite edible flowers to grow. They come back year after year and are drought tolerant. They also look gorgeous as a spring blooming flower in my landscaping and garden. Fresh leaves and flowers have a mild onion flavor and a light pleasant crunch that tastes delicious on everything, including this plate of cheesy scrambled eggs.

Black Chick Farm is offering herb seedlings for your fall garden harvests.

Pick up Greek Oregano, Moss Curled Parsley, Flat Leaf Parsley, Berggarten Sage, Sweet Basil, Genovese Basil, Red Rubin Basil, Calendula, Onion Chives, and Peppermint seedlings at Highlander Days this Saturday from 11a-4p off 30th and Lake.

will be selling them along with naturally organic produce from other Black urban farmers. There will also be other small businesses selling various products and goods. Don’t miss it!

This is White Panicle Aster. I noticed it growing in front of my home last year. I listened to the gentle nudge telling me to let it be.

This year it’s gotten quite tall and a stalk almost 6 ft high fell over in the strong winds. I was disappointed to see it had fallen as I had learned about it being a favorite of many pollinators and birds. A nudge in my spirit suggested I learn more about the plant before taking it to the compost pile.

White Panicle Aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum) has been and likely still is used by many Indigenous Sovereign Nations including the Zuni, Mohawk, and Iroquois to treat various ailments such as fevers, minor wounds, and nosebleeds. I looked over the plant and removed leaves that insects had claimed as home and cut it into sections I could hang it to dry.

I’m grateful to the Earth for bringing plant medicine to my doorstep and for gentle invitations that allow me to learn more about the land and plants I am privileged to interact with. I’m honored by the sacrifice of the plant and the wisdom that Indigenous peoples shared with enslaved African people. I believe that it was my ancestors who asked me to make space for this sacred plant. I’m grateful that I have learned to listen.

Branding tags for plant sale at Fabric Lab tomorrow from 10am-2pm. I raised native seedlings, herbs, and some fun varieties (ground cherries and hibiscus). Look for the yellow tag. DM me for a full plant list.

Y’ALL!!!! I overwintered carrots in the fridge! Some have new roots and most are regrown their tops. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. Thanks to the Earth for nurturing my curiosity. Thanks to the carrot for teaching me patience. Thanks to the ancestors for giving me the gift of the grower.

Now I’ll give these carrots back to the Earth so they can flower and produce seeds. And the journey can begin anew.
