German working dogs of medium to big size are known as German Shepherds, or Alsatians in Britain. Max von Stephanitz created the breed in 1899 by combining several old German herding dogs. It was first bred to herd sheep as a herding dog.

The Dogo Argentino, also known as Dogos Argentinos in plural, is a huge, mastiff-type dog breed native to Argentina. It was developed in Córdoba, central Argentina, at the beginning of the 20th century, mostly for hunting big game like pumas, wild boar, and peccaries.The current extinct Córdoba fighting dog, a bulldog-type fighting dog, a Bull Terrier, and a Mastín del Pirineo were among the foundation stock.
