So important. Even if it’s overcast, your car can still reach hot temperatures. Leave your dog at home.

It takes just 10 minutes for the temperature inside a car to rise to 115 degrees Fahrenheit when the air temperature outside is 96 degrees as it was this evening! I was putting groceries in the trunk of my car when I heard a dog barking. I looked around and saw a small dog peering out of the window on the passenger side of a car with the windows all the way up (not that it would have made a difference if they weren't). Shocked that someone would not know better, I went inside to report what I saw to the store manager. When we went to look for the car, the person had gone. Shouldn't this be common sense? If it's too hot for me and I have no fur, how hard is this weather on an animal that is covered with fur ~~ especially one locked inside a hot car??? ~ Cindy

Just a reminder, Hands On Dog Training is offering Puppy Playtime sessions on Thursday evenings. Your puppy must be under 5 months and good with other puppies. You must call Gloria @

We will be beginning our new classes on Saturday, May 4, 2024. The classes are 6 weeks long and cost $150.00. The classes are as follows:
Puppy Class: Saturday, May 4 @ 9:30 AM
Basic Obedience: Saturday, May 4 @. 10:30
Juvenile Class (Canine Good Citizen Class): Saturday, May 4 @ 11:30 AM
Community Canine (for those students that have already taken the Canine Good Citizen Class). Saturday, May 4 @ 12:30 PM
We will also be offering a Tuesday night class for dogs 5 months and above which begins on May 11 @ 6:00 PM.

Wanted to remind everyone that we off a puppy play ground at Hands On Dog Training. We meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM and includes puppies from 10 weeks to 20 weeks old. Great explanation on what can ruin a recall.

"So when can I trust my dog off lead ?
"Not yet" is usually the answer.
As with everything in training this needs to be worked on and the two key ingredients for having a dog (and trusting them) off lead are...
✅A reliable recall, and it needs to be a reliable one.
✅Lots more check ins, eye contact and engagement.
Another ingredient is excitement !!!
Yours!
While calmness and lessening excitement is needed for many dogs, the time to BE excited and BE exciting is when they come to you when called !
That is worth celebrating.
Don't get into a pattern of just saying good and giving a piece of kibble.....think about this from your dogs point of view.
They CHOSE to come to you when there are a world of distractions out there.
Celebrate that !
Up the value of the rewards, keep it interesting and fun....sometimes some jumping up and down from us, sometimes a piece of chicken or sometimes a favourite toy appears from nowhere.

"Human....you are so exciting to come too, I love coming to you when you call me !!!"

That is how you get a really reliable recall.

Looking at you when there are distractions around is rewardable...give them a tasty treat and guess what magic will happen ?
They will start to check in with you more and more....perfect !!!!

Off lead work really does require a level of relationship that is about fun, excitement and trust.
There are a world of exciting adventures out there for a dog, if they choose to be with you, that is rewardable !!!

Utilise long lines, have exciting rewards and watch the magic happen.

We will be beginning new classes on January 21.

We will be beginning our new fal pl classes in a few weeks:
Puppy Class will begin on Saturday, November 5 @ 9:30 AM. Still openings for this class. Your puppy needs to be at least 9 weeks old at the start or class and no older than 5 months at the start of class. I only require two of their four shots to enroll in the puppy class.

We will also be beginning our Juvenile Class on November 5 @ 11:30 AM. This class will expand your dog's training to a longer sit-stays- loose leash walking, etc. This class will also include training for the Canine Good Citizen Test which tests how good our dogs can be in public and around people. To be in this class, you must have already taken a Basis Manners Course from me or another trainer.

A new class will also be beginning on November 5. This is our Intermediate Class which will be a class to focus on our dogs in the community outside of our homes. We will be combining the AKC Community Canine Test with this class. Classes wills take place outside our classroom. In order to qualify for this class you must have taken a Basic Manners Class from me or another trainer.

We are also offering our Basic Manners Class. One class will begin on Saturday morning @ 10:30 or Tuesday evening, beginning November 8 @ 6:00 PM.

With the high temperatures we have had, this is something you need to pay attention to with your dog.

Keep your dog(s) safe by ensuring you understand the signs of heat stroke.

Prevent heat stroke impacting your dog by:

🐾 avoiding strenuous exercise,
🐾 taking your dog out early or later in the day when it's cooler
🐾 ensuring they always have access to water and shade
🐾 never leave them in the vehicle
