With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.
Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.
If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
VCA Redmond will be closed from 12p to 2p today for our monthly team meeting
Beginning August 1, 2024 the CDC will begin requiring ANY dog entering the United States to be:
- At least 6 months of age
- Identified with an ISO-compliant (at least 15 digits) microchip
- Healthy upon arrival
- Accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form
- Accompanied by an air waybill if arriving by air
- Accompanied by additional veterinary documentation, dependent on where the dog has traveled to in the preceding 6 months and where the rabies vaccination was administered.
This applies to dogs that are re-entering the US after travel to Canada or Mexico!!
For dogs re-entering the US after travel to Canada or Mexico (or other low-risk/rabies-free countries), pet owners must complete a CDC Dog Import Form. A veterinarian does NOT need to sign this form and there is no charge for filing this form. This form will be accessible online beginning July 15, 2024.
Owners must also have a Certification of U.S.-Issued Rabies Vaccination issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian at the clinic that administered the most recent rabies vaccination. For dogs re-entering the US after travel to high-risk countries, additional requirements include a rabies titer test and entry at a port with CDC-registered animal care facilities.
With these changing travel requirements, it is very important that you do not allow your dog’s rabies vaccination to lapse even by one day; if there is any lapse in rabies vaccination, the next rabies vaccine will be considered valid for only 1 year instead of 3.

Tornadoes form during intense thunderstorms and can reach wind speeds of 200+ mph. Although tornadoes can occur anywhere, they are prevalent in the Southeast and Midwest. Stay informed by downloading the FEMA app and signing up for weather reports and evacuation notices.
Keep a list handy of pet-friendly shelters and contact information for your local animal control office and ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) in case of evacuation.
Always remember to pack extra water and a travel bowl for your pets when adventuring outdoors this summer! Even when dogs are swimming, they can still be at risk for dehydration or heat related illness. Contact your veterinarian if your pet has fallen ill after spending time outdoors.
