My grandmother never swore. The closest she ever came to swearing was to say “Nerts!”

“Nerts!” was a minced oath for “nuts!” which was a minced oath for “off one’s head,” meaning “crazy.” By the 1900s, “nerts” had evolved to mean “nonsense.”

“Nuts!” as an exclamation was off-limits in US movies since it was considered a four-letter word with at least a vague implication of testicles, even when the speaker meant nothing of the sort. And goodness knows, my grandmother would never have intentionally said anything the early movie censors disapproved.

This has been my rabbit hole tonight.

Something just occurred to me about the daily Facebook birthday list.

I have three FB accounts. They don’t have identical friends. Even though I mainly use one account, each one of them has its own birthday list.

I do try to acknowledge birthdays every day, but I’ve only ever been checking my Rebecca Forrest account.

Sigh.

We had so much fun with our Fifth Annual Mimosa-Thon party guests last night. It was a mixture of neighbors, friends from biking, friends from the nearby church, from high school, from past jobs, from just about every aspect of our lives. We love that kind of gathering, with laughter and treats to share. Several people played the piano.

I never even had to hide.

Virgil and I stayed up long enough to get nearly everything cleaned up. There’s just a little more to do today, but it won’t take long.

Thank you to all of our guests. We loved seeing every one of you! So many people came, despite the rain.

A few brave souls even tried the new chocolate milk mimosa and enjoyed it!

I think we’re all ready for PARTY GUESTS! Holiday decorations are up. The mimosa glasses are in a pyramid. We’ve made a new kind of meatballs. And I think we have 30 bottles of champagne!
