Closure Notice

Very sad post for me to make but sadly The Piggy Lounge will be closing for good.

After a couple of years of covid and being unable to work on it due to being advised to isolate, I started the year super excited to get back at it. There's little things I love more than Guinea Pigs and having a little business with them at the centre was a dream. All was going fairly well but sadly world events happened and suddenly the cost of everything went up. Raw materials, postage, petrol and so on. After many calculations and careful consideration I realised that I am not at the moment turning any profit and in fact I am struggling to cover costs. And I don't even include my labour costs. Since I started I haven't raised any prices for my products and to be fair any raise I could do would not be sufficient or it would make them hard to sell due to price.

So I am hanging my hat on this, having had a blast for the last few years. I am utterly sad because I love my little brand but it's the sensible decision.

A big thank you to all supporters and followers and an extra special thank you to all my previous and current customers and guinea pig rescue friends for your support over the years.

Apologies for the lack of posts lately. The rescue is full to bursting and we’ve had the added challenge of keeping everyone cool during the exceptionally hot weather. We have lots of gorgeous pairs ready waiting for their chance of a happy new home and until they move we can’t help any more from our waiting list or from the almost daily requests to take more in. We really hope that everyone manages to stay safe and cool enough here in the UK over the next couple of days 🌞
- Please don’t leave guinea pigs outdoors - It’s not too late to bring them inside to temporary accommodation – use your bath if you have to!
- Block sunlight from your rooms using curtains, blinds or anything you can, it really makes a difference
- Refresh drinking bottles frequently and provide a bowl as well if possible
- Remove smaller hidies, especially plastic ones, and give them something else with better airflow such as a cotton sheet pegged over part of your cage
- Place cool mats or frozen bottles wrapped in a tea towel in your cage but position them so the guinea pigs can choose how close they get to them
- Use a damp sheet or towel over the front of the cage to help keep things cool
- Use fans to move the air around but not once it gets too hot
- Use cool mats or frozen bottles wrapped in a tea towel
- Feed watery vegetables little and often but not too much to give upset tummies

My sweet Ben, pictured here enjoying a bit of grass bigger than him, has been unwell.

Ben is a geriatric pig at 7,5 years of age. He still has gusto for life and is very happy and active. But a couple weeks ago I witnessed him having a seizure like episode. It’s like he blacked out, shaking, rolled on his back and tried to bite me. Super scary but 2 minutes later it was like nothing had happen. I continued monitoring it and within a week it happened 2x more.

The last time it happened it was scary because he started dragging his back right foot and eventually both legs. Still eating but of course things were different now. The next morning he was walking almost fine, just ever so slightly dragging his foot but off to vets we went. I was prepared for the worse but the vet said he looks amazing for his age and that these seizures could be related to age related brain deterioration but as he recovers quickly from them are not affecting his quality of life. I was so relieved and happy. We came home with meds and so far he hasn’t had any more of these episodes and I am back sewing more cosies which I will share with you soon.

Happy Easter everyone!

Thank you so much to everyone who has purchased from The Piggy Lounge. There is still cosies available in the Etsy store. The new Slumber pads have sold well and I hope the piggies love them. If you missed out on those I will be sewing more in a couple weeks.

In the meantime I have been busy something other than sewing, and have just finished this drawing of my Sweet Lola girl, now at the rainbow bridge.

Here's Ben and Odin modelling in the new Piggy Lounge cozy design. (Odin had just eaten a bit of red pepper, I guess no one told him he should wipe his face).

The Slumber Pad! Made with fleece and wadding for extra coziness. Also features a removable peed pad with a zorb inner.

The Slumber Pod stays upright but we all know piggies have a mind of their own so if they fancy sleeping on top the all fleece designs makes it nice and cosy everywhere. Suitable for 1 piggie.

Alongside our other cosies, they will be available tomorrow on The Piggy Lounge Etsy shop in a small number of prints, some with limited prints.

Apologies for the quietness here! Alongside with a family medical situation that took much of my time I have also been sewing like crazy to restock The Piggy Lounge Etsy shop. I’ve also been doing a lot of “boring” reading and researching of marketing and business.

Can someone explain why this perfect little trio of 3 month old piggies, 2 sisters and their neutered brother, keep getting overlooked?! They were born here and have been ready and waiting for 6 weeks! Babies usually get snapped up? I just don’t understand!? They’ve not only been over looked, but turned down twice, when there’s no other suitable piggies!?

They would be perfect for a family starting out! 😞

Slight change of plans, after this post back in December!

The Piggy Lounge will revert to selling premade fleece cosies via a Etsy shop rather than custom orders (link on this post). I will still accept custom orders on a one by one basis (send me a message) but premades as before will be the norm. I have a severe lack of storage so cannot have large enough varied fleeces that are needed for choice for custom orders.

The Piggy Lounge has always keen to have hard to find and quirky fabric choices and I have some cosies in very limited numbers with the cutest print available soon.

The Piggy Lounge website is now working! It’s a new website with a different structure and some parts are still in construction.

Going forward The Piggy Lounge will work mainly through custom orders rather than pre made cosies. You see the designs available, choose the fabrics, email me, pay and boom…after a couple of weeks you will get your order. On occasion I may have ready to dispatch items and these will be available through the website.

I am pleased to inform that at the moment I am open and accepting custom orders for 2022 dispatch so if you are interested have a look at the website. I am also designing some new cosies and have some very exciting fabrics coming soon.
