Dr Sam out and about in Deman last week.
He performed a surgery on a cows eye and also castrated a donkey.
We don’t get to see donkeys everyday but he is more than happy to accommodate for our slightly more unusual patients. 🫏🫏😍

Calving Season

Spring is just around the corner, which means that calving season has started or is about to start for most people.
With that in mind, it is probably a good time to brush up on the stages of calving and when you need to intervene.

There are three main stages of labour.
Stage 1. The heifer/cows cervix dilates. This stage often goes unnoticed, but you may see the cow isolate herself, swish her tail and she may have some clear discharge.

Stage 2. Delivery of the calf. This stage begins when the ‘water bag’ becomes visible. A normal healthy heifer should calf unassisted within one hour and a healthy cow should calve within half an hour of the bag becoming visible. They may take longer than this, but the important thing is that they are making progress. If the cow is straining and the calf is not becoming visible, or has stopped straining it may be time to help.
You can attempt to assist the cow at this stage, or it may be time to call the vet. If you are unsure when stage 2 started, it may be better to intervene earlier rather than later.

Stage 3 expulsion of the placenta. If it does not pass, it is best not to forcibly remove it. Unless the cow becomes unwell, we recommend that you leave it alone to break down on its’ own which may take several days.
If you notice the cow becomes unwell (off feed, sunken eyes, high temperature) she may need veterinary attention.

So…there are 3 main stages of labour, and the most important thing is to make sure the cow or heifer is making progress if she is actively pushing.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ring the clinic and ask to speak to our cattle vet Sam 65431888

Warning! Positive cases of Leptospirosis in our local animals.

What is Leptospirosis?
It is a bacterial disease that can be found in water, soil and even damp grass. It can be spread when a dogs mouth, nose or eyes come in contact with urine infected soil or water. It can also be contracted by eating a diseased animals carcase.
Leptospirosis can cause Liver or kidney failure and lung disease.

Symptoms and Prevention:
Unfortunately, most symptoms are non specific and wide ranging but some signs can be dull, vomiting, diarrhoea, jaundice, high temperature and increased thirst. Some dogs may not show any symptoms at all and if they do show any symptoms they will only arise 2 weeks after the exposure to the disease.
Prevention is the best cure!
We can provide a vaccine once a year to help protect your Dog.

If you suspect your dog has strange symptoms or has been in contact with any of the items mentioned, call 6543 1888, our team are there to help.

Every year, as part of our commitment to our valued community, we sponsor an event called the Jack Johnston Memorial Yard Dog Trial in Scone. This year, 3 year old Kelpie, ‘The Lees Majik,’ won the highest point scone in the Encouragement with a smashing 95 points out of 100.

It was lovely to receive an email from The Lees Majik’s owners, Shannon and Nicky, who said they have only owned Majik for 3 months now. He came to them as a fully trained working trail dog, and he’s hit the ground running with Shannon as his handler.

They said “We would like to thank you for sponsoring the class we won which was the highest score in the encouragement class, most appreciated.”

This feedback warms our hearts at Satur Vets, knowing that our contribution has gone to a good home.

A huge congrats to Shannon, Nicky and winning pooch, The Lees Majik, as well as everyone else involved in the show.

We look forward to being involved again next year.

Everything you need to know about 3 Day Sickness:

What is 3 day sickness, otherwise known as bovine ephemeral fever?
It’s a virus transmitted by biting insects. Most commonly, its evident when animals are stiff and sore for a few days, and may end up going down. Although most animals recover by themselves, it’s important that more severe cases are treated appropriately.

How is it treated?
Down animals should be provided shade, soft bedding, easy access to food and water and be rolled to lay on the opposite side at least morning and night. Although most cases recover within a few days, it is not unheard of for some animals to take weeks, if not months to recover. We can assist to control the animal’s high temperature and reduce recovery times by administering anti-inflammatories.

How is it prevented?
There is a vaccine available for 3 days, which is recommended especially for bulls or other heavy animals and those with high value.
We also recommend fly tags or other insect control to limit the insects biting your animals and spreading the virus.

What is Pinkeye?
Pinkeye is a bacterial infection of the surface of the eye, spread by flies. It can cause temporary or permanent vision loss due to scarring and can also decrease the value of your livestock! It’s extremely painful and is a welfare concern for your animals.

How is it treated?
There are two main ways to treat Pinkeye. The first is an antibiotic ointment that is applied directly to the eye and the second, is an antibiotic which is injected into the eyelid, used for more severe cases. There is a vaccine available, however it only covers certain strains so may not always be effective. To minimise scarring, early intervention is key!

How is it prevented?
Pinkeye is best prevented by good fly control, using fly tags and sprays to repel or kill them, as well as environmental control, such as watering down your yards, especially if you’re holding weaners there.
