Gator x CoCo puppies will be six weeks old Wednesday. One Boy and One Girl. Gator was making sure they met his approval while we were doing the pictures! LOL! Sorry I’m just now posting pictures. I wrote this post about a year ago for this page BUT with so many new followers, I thought I would do an informational repost!

Hello everyone!
I have recently been asked by a few people if we carry Merle corgis and I thought that it would be a good idea to make a post about this subject.
I would like to note that we exclusively breed purebred AKC Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
I would like to start off this conversation with the fact that I do not have an issue with mixed breed dogs (after all, every single one of the breeds you see today started as a mixed breed).
HOWEVER, I DO have a problem with false advertisements. I have been seeing alot of "Purebred Merle Pembrokes" on my feed lately and I would like to take the time to explain why this statement makes me uneasy:

1.) The Pembroke does NOT have a merle gene. They can't naturally produce merles at all. Cardigans do carry the gene and produce merles.

2.) This statement misleads the buyer into believing that they have a typical Pembroke. When you mix a Cardigan and a Pembroke, you have to test for genetic diseases prevalent in BOTH of the breeds. So the typical DM, EIC, and VWD1 does not cut it in this mix.

3.) They mislead customers by saying that they are registered as purebred with the CKC or Continental Kennel Club(not to be confused with the Canadian Kennel Club). You do NOT need a pedigree to be registered as a purebred with that registry (fun fact: they once registered a turtle as a purebred dog before)

Now once again, I do not have a problem with people who breed American Corgis (what people have been calling Cardigan and Pembroke mixes) but I feel you should do your research on the breeder you choose.

Are they testing for everything that needs to be tested for?
Are they using misleading advertisements?
Do they have a reason for mixing the breeds other than coat color? (I.E- wanting the dog to accomplish a certain task or have a certain temperament that they can't get without mixing)
Are they using safe breeding practices? (I.E- you can't breed two merles together because it could cause puppies to be blind or deaf)

I urge you to do your research and ask questions. If you need any advice on if a situation looks or feels a little off, I am happy to look it over and give you an honest opinion.
A breeder isn't someone that you should just come to when you want a new puppy. We are here to guide you. To help you along the way.
