🌾🐄 **Bloat in Ruminants: Heads-Up!** 🐑🌾

Bloat can be a serious issue for our ruminant friends! Whether it’s from lush pasture or certain feeds, keep an eye out for signs like a swollen left side, difficulty breathing, or mouth/nose froth / an off feed animal. Early detection is key! If you suspect bloat, don’t wait—contact your vet ASAP. Do not stick a needle in your animal without veterinary direction…… ⚠️ . With timely treatment, your animals can bounce back quickly and stay healthy. Stay vigilant, and we’re here to help at River Valley Veterinary Services! 🚑 🐄 🐐

Here in these bovine cases we placed a surgical bloat whistle for one free gas bloat in a thin heifer (predisposing factor = respiratory disease / pneumonia), and one frothy bloat in a lactating cow that got into a batch of moldy / ye**ty / improperly fermented feed 🌱 🦠 The whistle stays in place until the bloat is resolved and the good GI bacteria and function is restored.

📝 Reminder! After a fair, show, or travel, think BIOSECURITY and DISEASE PREVENTION! 🥇 Keep animals that are just arriving home separated from others for 10-21 days quarantine without nose to nose contact, and no shared food or water or supplies. We also have a new respiratory vaccine available for small ruminants! Discuss with your vets if you’d like to implement this into your protocols.

New equine news 🐎: make sure your horses are up to date on EEE vaccine! Lots of cases reported this time of year

Strain of Avian Influenza found in sick dairy cows in Texas / Kansas 🐄 🐦 News blurb FYI below from the AABP and AASRP:

(ASHLAND, OHIO) March 25, 2024 – There has been a recent disease event in dairy cattle with reports of affected herds in several states. Samples submitted from dairy cattle affected with the current disease outbreak were recently confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to have highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
Veterinarians and the dairy industry are working collaboratively with state and federal officials during the ongoing investigation.

H5N1 in Birds, Mammals
HPAI is most commonly found in birds and poultry; wild waterfowl are known carriers. According to the USDA, 48 states have had cases of HPAI in poultry and wild birds since the outbreak began in 2022. Over 82 million birds have been affected. There have also been reports of over 200 mammals diagnosed with the virus. The cases in dairy cattle are unique as it is only the second time it has been found in a U.S. ruminant (cattle, sheep, goats). Earlier this month, HPAI was found in goats in Minnesota on a farm where poultry first tested positive. According to the USDA, migratory birds appear to be the source of the infection in cattle.

Clinical Signs seen in affected cattle:
-decreased milk production
-acute sudden drop in production with some severely impacted cows experiencing thicker, concentrated, colostrum like milk
-decrease in feed consumption; abnormal tacky or loose f***s; and low grade fever
impacted animals were primarily older cows in mid-lactation, while dry cows, heifers and youngstock did not appear to be affected

Impact on Dairy Cattle
Veterinarians and animal caregivers first reported seeing decreased feed intake and milk production in affected dairy cattle. Dairies are reporting that about 10% of the milking cows become sick. There have been no confirmed deaths in cattle due to this disease. Cattle appear to recover in two-to-three weeks with supportive care. No cases have been found in mammals in or around New York currently!

Food Safety
Federal and state guidelines exist to ensure the safety of milk and meat products. Milk that is pasteurized and meat that is properly cooked remains safe for human consumption.
AABP will continue to monitor this situation and provide reliable information to its members and the public.
For more information, see the USDA announcement at https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/newsroom/news/sa_by_date/sa-2024/hpai-cattle.
