Whether it’s from lush pasture or certain feeds, keep an eye out for signs like a swollen left side, difficulty breathing, or mouth/nose froth / an off feed animal. Early detection is key! If you suspect bloat, don’t wait—contact your vet ASAP. Do not stick a needle in your animal without veterinary direction…… ⚠️ . Here in these bovine cases we placed a surgical bloat whistle for one free gas bloat in a thin heifer (predisposing factor = respiratory disease / pneumonia), and one frothy bloat in a lactating cow that got into a batch of moldy / yeasty / improperly fermented feed 🌱 🦠 The whistle stays in place until the bloat is resolved and the good GI bacteria and function is restored.

-up to date on vaccines (potomac horse season!)
-up to date on dental care (if you can’t think of the last time your animal’s teeth were looked at, call us! Same with sheath cleanings…. This is a good time for the vet to screen spots for common cancers 🧼)
-up to date on a thorough physical exam (lumps and bumps check)
-parasite control plan: every farm is different, discuss your deworming protocol with your vet and make sure your animals are up to date on a routine fecal egg count 🪱 🔬
Staying on top of this routine health maintenance will help to catch small problems before they become big and potentially life threatening issues later.
