Sanctuary of Friends Animal sanctuary and rescue In the early 1950's, Grandpa “Oliver” (born Olavi {O-lah-vee}) built a farm for his family in Jefferson, Ohio. We did it!
(1)

He died in 1991, on the farm, while shoveling corn to take to the local mill. My uncles stepped up after Grandpa’s unexpectent death and, with my Uncle Steve at the wheel, the hay continued to be made and the memories continued to roll in. Then, make way for 2010 and the screeching halt. Uncle Steve passed away unexpectedly. He spent his last day on earth working and dying on the same land his Dad

, my Grandpa, once had. He died on a beautiful August day during the year 2010. Fast forward 3 years and through many long conversations, forms, loans, attorney appointments, and contemplation, the farm was to stay in the family and this time, with Grandma’s blessing, the third generation was at the wheel. After loads of money, buckets of sweat, ounces of blood, and, oh, the tears, I, as the proud new owner, continued to make hay and memories. I guess that wasn't enough:

In the late winter of 2015/2016, me, along with my sister and dear friend, set off on the daunting task of starting a 501(c)3 non profit animal rescue. In March 2016, while the hay fields were covered in snow and the rescued horses and cats happily tucked in their warm barns, it was official. My farm would become the home base for our animal rescue. We did it for all the animals the three of us have saved and loss over the years and for all the animals that will cross our paths. Their stories will be told and, with the public support, we will be able to to save more. Today, the farm has a name, appropriately, Sanctuary of Friends (SOF), continues to make hay, continues to make memories, and now has a new purpose: to offer animals in need a SOF place to land.

When you live in NE Ohio, evenings with a visible sun, warmth, birds chirping, a gentle breeze, and all the signs of spring magnified, are priceless. When you experience this sensational time with a once neglected animal by your side, everything becomes more meaningful.

Today is brought to you by Biscuit in boxes. He is our latest rescue. Part of a TNR (trap, neuter, release). He was not welcomed back to the colony he came from. Picked on by the other cats, yet too feral for an adoption event, we took him in. Well, he’s definitely found a SOF place to land here. He tries very hard to be a shadow of the feral boy he once was. He still has some feral moments, but those never phase us here at SOF. We know the sweet boy he truly is and is trying so hard to be.

Can you help find “Toby” a home before he has to go to a shelter. His human mom is on hospice and does not have long to live. A family member has tried to introduce him to her home, but her cats reacted poorly to him. He is 11 years old, 7 pounds, neutered, up-to-date on dental and vaccinations, and very sweet. Located in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

Need a last minute Christmas gift idea?? Donate to SOF money, pig feed, cat food, litter, pine shavings, straw, or drying pellets in the receivers name and we’ll send a notice to them. If interested, we’ll send specific details on the brands our rescues are use to. All items can be purchased at Centerra Co-Op or Tractor Supply Company (including gift cards). Both are located throughout NE Ohio. Maybe we can arrange a meet and greet in the New Year, also 😽 🐷🐴 🐐

All of us humans and animals here at SOF thank you Esther and her dads for creating what we know as “The Esther Effect” ❤️❤️

🌈🐷 In Loving Memory of Esther the Wonder Pig 🐷🌈
It's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a true icon in the animal sanctuary world, Esther the Wonder Pig. She was more than just a pig; she was a beacon of love, compassion, and change.

Esther came into the lives of Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter as a tiny piglet, believed to be a "micropig." She grew to be a magnificent 600-pound wonder, and her dads stood by her every step of the way. Even after their separation, their love for Esther never wavered.

For 11 incredible years, Esther redefined what it means to be a farm animal. She inspired her dads to open their own sanctuary, Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary and even led them to write a book about her life-changing impact. Her Instagram page, a diary of her daily adventures, touched the hearts of millions.

Esther lived her life alongside her siblings, Phil the dog and Cornelius the turkey, teaching us that family isn't defined by species but by love. She was a sister, a daughter, and a friend to many.

In her passing, let's remember the "Esther Effect"—her undeniable influence that made us all reconsider our choices and our treatment of all sentient beings. Esther taught us that every animal deserves a life free from harm and full of love, just like she had.

As we mourn her loss, let's also celebrate her legacy. Esther, you may have left this physical world, but your spirit will forever inspire us to be better, to love more, and to fight for a world where every animal is treated with the dignity they deserve.
Rest in peace, beautiful soul. 🌈🐷💕

Running a small livestock rescue nearly by yourself has its challenges and setbacks, to say the least. However, when young adults like Brooke take the initiative to reach out, step out of their comfort zone and venture into a very unique environment with an open mind and willingness I feared was a forgotten trait, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and hope.
Brooke, you are going to go far in your life. It may not be the plan you imagine now, but you will survive with grace anything life throws your direction. Just remember to handle it like you handled the bipolar potbelly pig and the goat who doesn’t care about your personal space, today. ☺️

Please, if anyone has been wanting to adopt a dog reach out to Mahoning County, Ohio. (Youngstown, Ohio)
This county has a high amount of strays, owner surrenders, and heartbreaking abuse. They need help!!!
SOF does not have the ability to care for dogs, so the least we can do is share their plea.

MAHONING COUNTY RESIDENTS❗️❗️❗️

Not everyone is on Facebook and/or on our page. We post constantly about being at maximum capacity. We have an owner surrender waiting list of over 70 dogs.

Yesterday we took in 5 strays. Today we took in 1 aready and it is only 8:30 am.

Yesterday afternoon someone came in and tried to turn in their pit bull as a stray. After questioning a van full of people the truth was told. A little while later someone came in with their pit bull off leash and walked into the lobby to “donate” him to us. We had a family in the building with their 3 dogs getting ready to walk out into that lobby at the same time. We are not always dealing with rational people. The challenge to get through to people is much like a brick wall.

People aren’t getting it. WE HAVE NO ROOM.

Spread the word. If someone you know needs to rehome their dog tell them to reach out to local rescues. Please be aware that everyone is in the same situation right now. Shelters, pounds and rescues are all full.

SPAY AND NEUTER -we are in crisis mode.

This mark on my pants is from a muddy pig nose. It’s on my calf just above where my tall boots end. This is our potbelly princess Marigold’s way of reminding me I turned my back on her before she dismissed me. I forgot she’s the most important animal in the barn.

Merry Christmas from all the critters here at Sanctuary of Friends. Including our two latest rescues: Tigger and Dozer. I’m sure they are grateful to be warm and cozy this Christmas Day, but they are still in need of a place to call home. Please message us if you are interested in adopting them. They are the sweetest little things ❤️❤️

These two, along with others, were rescued from severe neglect just over 5 years ago. Since that day in November of 2017, they have only experienced love & comfort.

These 2 siblings were left behind when their owner had to move to assisted living due to health problems. They are now abandoned in an apartment and being looked after daily by the wonderful landlord who called SOF to help, but their future is very uncertain. So please, spread the word that they are in desperate need of a family of their own. Also, the landlord is willing to allow a new renter of their apartment to foster them for us! So if you are in need of an apartment in Jefferson, Ohio 44047 and would like to foster for us please contact us!
The long haired female (on the green blanket) is Tigger and the short haired male, Dozer. We approximate their age to be 5 months old and they are getting fixed this coming week. They have tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV.

How do I articulate the loss of one of SOF’s oldest sanctuary members?

The phrase I (Allison) say every time a beloved animal in my care has died, suddenly or planned, is “they still are one of the lucky ones.” Because this is was what SOF is about. Providing a SOF place to land.

This morning I held Goose’s frail, aging body in my arms while waiting for the vet to euthanize her. I placed my lips on her head and talked to her. While the injection was given I cradle her head and stroked her cheeks. She was calm, she was purring. She purred until her body turned listless and her eyes became even more vacant than the kidney disease had already caused.

Yes, “Goose” was definitely one of the lucky ones. Once she crossed my path 11 years ago, she was loved, she was comfortable, she was cherished, and she was one fluffy, soft, gray reason SOF came to exist.

Thank you “Goose” for the years you trusted me. Perhaps, because of you, I’m one of the lucky ones, too.
