Certified Osteopath-Muscle Therapy, Holistic Equine Practitioner, Registered FEI Permitted Equine Therapist

I am dedicated to those who ‘care’ and want to know why head to toe. These modalities source inflammatory pain and relieve same along with advice on a more natural clean nutrition program that assists in decreasing said inflammation and maintain the proper nutritional balance of your horse. Not all change food programs with some modifying, but those who do have profited greatly.

Involving two professions is time consuming, however extremely rewarding. As a trained learning disability specialist adding this field felt perfectly natural as i seem to be a born nurturer. Equines have always been in my life, the added field felt perfectly natural and certification through Tallgrass Institute educators, BEST Holistic Medicine, Holistic Equine Therapies added another road to travel which has been more rewarding than expected. With this page, please read and enjoy. Healthy nutritional recommendations are made if needed as most of the equine population is either overfed, underfed, but mostly misfed. Your horse will have a better opportunity to live an optimal life if fed properly and it is very easy to make the change be 24/7. You are what you eat and so are your horses. Please know what you eat, eats you. Gastro upset is triggered by so many factors and food is an important factor. Be kind to your ‘gut’ and horse’s too!

Being associated with SherAl Farm, the dimension of modalities are broad and results very quick, happening right before your eyes and can be longer lasting in many instances than I first anticipated. Owners, trainers and groom staff are amazed as the horse feels the freedom of the spasm contraction release. My approach is quite simple; assess food program, additives, understand workload/maintenance, past/present injuries, watch/listen how horse moves, feel with hands from nose to toes with my own ‘map’ of pain points within muscle groups, release spasms/contractions/soreness if necessary, all holistically. In many instances, a point of pain is visual which may be where I begin. Please know, ANYONE can over palpate an area and diagnose pain that is not there. Knowing how to properly use tactile feel by a trained clinician is best. Finding reactions lead to discoveries of needed maintenance, a pinched nerve, an impingement is found or lack of muscle development which always has a sound reason, fed a compromised diet of fillers, GMO by products and lack of real grains, causing chemical imbalance issues (and numbers of gastric issues is astounding), mouth/teeth maintenance and overuse of additives. Also, the fascia-connective tissue between all muscles, bones and organs are always lengthening and contracting where spasm/inflammation can result in pain/soreness as it plays a key role in movement.

A flexion assessment may be done as well, if necessary, to further understand depth of problem(s). The entire front to back of horse is examined looking for TMJ (including tongue feel-appearance and restriction of movement), neck, shoulder, topline from the cervical and/or thoracic trapezius, lumbodorsal fascia, superficial gluteal to the semitendinosus feeling for telltale reactions. Please note, pain exhibited in one area may not always be where to apply methods. Alleviating this soreness before it develops into a soft tissue injury can be crucial. Correct static stretching preceeded by a dynamic warmup allows the gtos and proprioceptors in areas to ‘let go’ bringing about relief-(NOTE-never static stretch cold tissue, it’s like pulling on a frozen rubber band). If you question at all, think about all the times you were about to take a step which was not as expected and were able to stop yourself, the proprioceptors saved you. Unfortunately, soft tissue injuries (tears) such as suspensories/ligaments have a higher percentage to tear again. Maintaining those stress points before they may become a lameness is ideal. So preventive care is essential, however it does not protect your horse from an injury. And don’t forget their tail movement, as much information is gleaned from examination. A finishing retest is performed to detect soreness not corrected as there are times when only one application method is not enough or possibly too much for one day depending on involvement.
