PROPER SHELTER IS THE LAW!

While we wish every dog would be brought inside during extreme cold, we know that’s not always the reality. With temperatures expected to drop below 10°F going into next week, it’s critical to ensure outdoor dogs have proper shelter and care.

Virginia Law on Outdoor Dogs:
- Dogs cannot be kept outside on tethers or chains when temperatures are below 32°F
- Dogs must have access to adequate food and unfrozen water
- Dogs must be provided an adequate shelter with stipulations such as having a solid, raised floor with a wind break and door covering

If you see a dog in distress or without proper shelter, contact your local animal control immediately. You could be the only thing standing between life and death for that animal.

When you report, follow up to ensure the dog’s safety and that legal codes are enforced. Together, we can protect vulnerable animals from preventable suffering.

Two of our board members, Sheri Pence Laubach and David Greiner along with Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center director, Jon Hilbert, spent yesterday touring the Humane Society of Charlotte to observe best practices in shelter management, learn about battling employee/volunteer burnout, and explore various fundraising ideas, all in preparation for the opening of the new shelter in 2025!

We have 3 new animals in need from SVASC. We are so happy to be able to get them into see our vet at Animal Hospital of Waynesboro. Swiss Miss will be undergoing Heartworm treatment, Pixie is scheduled for dental surgery, while feline Adipose just had her dental surgery last week. The community Pet Food pantry at SVASC has an excess amount of dry dog food for anyone in need. They must throw it away after expiration date, and they would definitely rather give it to those in need. Stop by the shelter during business hours to get food.

We'd like you all to give a hello to Chief. He made his way to SVASC as part of a hoarding case. Chief needs extensive medical care so they asked if we could take on his case. He has seen our vet, Dr. Reeder, at Animal Hospital of Waynesboro. Chief had many issues, infected skin, blood in urine, and arthritis. He is already being treated for those issues. He had x-rays and will also be needing surgery (Femoral Head Ostectomy) to fix his dislocated hip (old injury), and possible entropion surgery on his eyes, as well as a neuter. He is showing so much progress in his foster home where he is gaining weight and getting ready for his surgery on Jan 3rd. We thank everyone that has donated to our Christmas campaign. We continue to ask for donations as Chief will be costly, but he is deserving of the best care we can give him. If you'd like to help Chief this Christmas, donate using the link below.

This extremely handsome fella is Hobo. SVASC reached out to us to see if we could get him into AHW to get his hind leg checked over. He'll be going tomorrow to make sure he is doing well and healing properly from a chip fracture. He'll get everything he needs thanks to your donations! We'll get him in tip top shape and ready to find a new home. He's available for adoption at SVASC!

🎃To EXPEDITE the process, please fill out a FOSTER OR ADOPTION APPLICATION BEFOREHAND! That way if you've been approved, we can find the right pup for you asap! Please bring family members and any additional [& leashed] family dogs with you so we can ensure the best fit.

As part of the application process, we require consent from a landlord/housing verification, vet verification that all animals in the home are up to date on their vaccines & rabies, plus 2-3 personal references who can vouch for you.

Please bring vaccine & spay/neuter records, plus rabies certification for ALL CURRENT PETS as many vets are closed on Saturdays. If you RENT, get your landlord's number out! Lastly, let your personal references know that you listed them on your application so they know to expect a call from us!

As the MUNICIPAL shelter for Staunton, Augusta Co & Waynesboro, we can only shelter animals from that jurisdiction, BUT WE CAN ADOPT OUT ANYWHERE.

We are so thankful that we were able to help Charlie with his entropion surgery. Now, finally, he has a forever home ❤️

Charlie has been out of the shelter for a minute, but his adoption was FINALIZED!! Thank you to Friends of Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center for helping Charlie with his entropion surgery - it's all payed off now! He's a happy & healthy boy!

Say hello to Howard! This senior fellow ended up at SVASC and in need of medical care. They reached out to us, and we got him in to see Dr. Reeder for exam and bloodwork. He's got a few more visits ahead of him for dental surgery and a limp, but we'll make sure he gets everything he needs. Better days are ahead for Howard! He's available for adoption through Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center.
