Today's post is very important information to all possible new owners of mainec***s. Unfortunately, we have heard some very ugly stories so we thought of giving you some heads up info and please do not put breeders all in the same basket 🙏

You decided that you wish to add a mainec**n kitten to your family, well here is some important information & homework:

Do they grow big - yes they do, they are the largest domestic breed. They take up to 5yrs for full growth. Males can grow between 7 to 11kgs, females can grow between 5 to 8kgs;

Do they need grooming - yes, like any other semi or longhair cat, they need grooming and it is important that they are introduced to grooming from a very young age;

Are mainec***s streetwise - not at all, it is not safe to give them access to any other area, being a balcony, terrace, roofs etc. Unless it is safely enclosed, it is very dangerous.

Do they have health requirements - yes, it is very important that the breeder that you chose is doing the right breeding programme. All breeding maine c***s should be genetically negative to the most prone diseases, that is, HCM / PKD / SMA & Pk-def plus a yearly heart echo is done to ensure that HCM is not present. Genetic tests are not enough. If the breeder is not testing - please stay away, do not support backyard breeders;

Can mainec***s have blue eyes - NO, blue eyes are only allowed in white mainec***s who unfortunately can be deaf. So pls do not support those breeding blue eyed c***s - they carry the DBE gene which is causing many problems & malformities. The mainec**n is already beautiful as it is, let's leave it a natural breed without human interventions;

When visiting the breeder pls ask as many questions as possible:

Check the environment;

Ask to see the parents of your kitten, where are they kept? are they caged?

Are the kittens being socialised? If the breeder releases the kitten before they are fully vaccined (12wks of age) - stay away;

When did the mother of the kitten had her last litter, is she being overbred? at least a year should lapse between 1 litter and another;

Will a pedigree be given? this is a very important document to ensure that no inbreeding is taking place

This weekend it was another busy time @ Lionheartc**nmt Cattery.

We had our foreign cardiologist in Malta, carrying out the annual heart checks on our mainec***s:

Lionheartc**n Mr Spock - 6th scan - HCM clear
Caramelloc**n Pinot - 4th scan - HCM clear
Punto Valentino Eliska - 4th scan - HCM clear
Punto Valentino Annamaria (aka Cinderella) - 2nd scan - HCM clear
Giuditta Giulietta Lince del Etna - 3rd scan - HCM clear

All our c***s are genetically tested negative for HCM, Pkd, Pk-def & SMA, but it doesn't stop there, we check all our breeding c***s yearly plus blood tests & health check ups.

The health of all our c***s is our top priority.
