A greyhound from Florida stole my heart.....

In 2015 we adopted our first retired racing greyhound, a handsome red/fawn boy. We instantly fell in love with his soulful eyes and gentle, exotic ways. Kairo came to Calgary from Pensacola, Florida, along with 7 others on a warm June weekend and joined our family the same day.

While in awe of the sleek, elegant, muscular body, these beautiful hounds have very little fur, fat or padding of any sort. It wasn't long before the fall winds began to blow and I quickly realized that a Canadian winter, even the milder ones here in southern Alberta, would necessitate some weather-appropriate hound wear. I purchased a coat online from a company that specializes in greyhound wear but found the fit just wasn't right. Too many gaps for the wind and not nearly cozy enough. Nothing in pet stores seemed to fit the long, slender, deep chested greyhound form. I tried several ways to compensate for the shortcomings and the following year, after resurrecting my sewing skills for my daughter's wedding, I decided to design something that would work for Kairo here in Lethbridge, AB where we have chilly summer nights, at times minus 25 to 30 Celcius in the winter and soggy springs and falls. I designed and sewed Kairo's first coat and have since donated several to charity and custom made some for friends and fellow greyhound lovers.

My husband and I are actively involved in greyhound rescue, re-homing and fostering. Having many fosters come through our home has reinforced the need for quality, functional coats. I also design and sew belly bands (male wraps) for greyhounds transitioning to home life from track life. Just recently a beautiful foster girl came to us with "lady part" issues that required surgical correction. I designed and sewed some "panties" for her during that time, as she needed discreet protection. They were super cute, worked beautifully, and were a much cheaper alternative to doggies diapers which, by the way, do not fit the greyhound shape at all. I am in the process of perfecting the design and will add them to the list of available items in the store in the near future.

My husband and I actively volunteer, donating our resources in several different areas....time, transportation, monetary donations, fostering etc. I am committed to donating a portion of all sales directly to charities....the charities I presently support are Northwest Canadian Greyhound League, Canada; Almost Home for Hounds, USA; 112 Carlota Galgos, Spain; and Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert, Spain.
