For those that don't know Dorothy's story when she was 10 days old we were direct hit by a tornado. I got the dogs downstairs but not the cats and not Leica and her two puppies. It was bad and I tried to get the puppies and call the cats but I had trouble getting the basement door open due to the wind. Lecia came running but Dorothy and her brother remained. Thankfully the house was in one piece. Thus Dorothy's name and her registered name Turnabout Not in Kansas. Yesterday the sequel to the movie Twister came out so introducing my little Tornados with names from the characters in the movie.

Not the best photos. The puppies were introduced to a crate today. They were locked in while I cleaned about 5 minutes until they were quiet. They were let out and slept like this while I groomed Breeze. They are happy, relaxed, and quiet.

4 weeks today and we are finally starting to get some activity. Paper training is almost complete. This is the precursor to house breaking.

Shake it…shake it off…

A recent study by two researchers in France looked at sniffing, pulse rate, and leash length on walks. Sixty-one dogs were taken on three separate walks, five minutes each walk, once with a 1.5m leash, once with a 5m leash, and once without a leash at all (walk order was randomized for each dog). Off-leash dogs sniffed the most, more than 3x as long as the dogs on short leashes. Dogs on long leashes spent nearly as much time as unleashed dogs sniffing, almost 3x as long as dogs on short leashes.

This study also found that sniffing resulted in lowered pulse rates, and the more intensely they sniffed, the more their pulse rates lowered. Pulse rate was also lowered when dogs “shook off” during walks on all leash lengths. The “shake off” behavior was often seen when the dog’s pulse rate was particularly high.

With puppies going home in two weeks I want to discuss collar strangulation again. A dog I loved very much who is in many of the Turnabout dogs died due to this 6 years ago. His family tried to get them apart but could not unbuckle the collar. The dogs were trying to get away from each other. The owner was finally able to cut it off but it was too late. I cringe when I see photos of dogs wearing collars and playing mouth games or jumping on each other. Also collars can get caught in the house. My dogs only wear collars when they are going somewhere and it's always been this way.

Labaradorablebffs wrote a heartbreaking Facebook post about why you should always take your dog's collar off when you leave to avoid collar strangulation.

The puppies went for their eye exam today. It’s an hour each way no mess in the crate and no one got sick. Nice quiet puppies. Now a little lunch and playtime before going back inside.
