In loving memory and celebration of a beautiful horse, Adahs Alexander.
Adahs Alexander (Alex), (3/4/93 - 11/20/23), a life long partner gave up the fight. Alex, a purebred Arabian horse was sired by my stallion Bara El Shabbat and out of my mare Jameel Adah.
Alex was an extremely sensitive horse with a very confident attitude that made the training interesting! The training and nurturing made for an invincible bond. He always had to check on me as well as his pasture mates to make sure all was right with the world. The connection was so strong that he knew more about you than perhaps you knew about yourself.
His many accolades in dressage and hunter performances are definitely noteworthy, but the best was was his first dressage performance at the age of 3, as he did the “Cha Cha” up the centerline rather than a nice relaxed rhythmic straight centerline. And, the best outstanding performance was the test he performed in late January of 2023 at the age of 30, making for a letter perfect performance inductee to the Dressage Foundation.
Alex was a survivor of Cushings disease after being diagnosed at the age of 18. He was very resilient and determined. I will always cherish the memories and lessons of strength, sensitivity and forward motion that he taught me.

In Remembrance of a Noble Horse:
Champagne’s Echo foaled 3/28/92 was humanely euthanized 3/5/23. “Echo,” a National Show Horse (Saddle/Arabian ), by breed had been a wedding gift from a husband to his wife. Echo matured into a beautiful 15.3 hand chestnut stallion. He was the pride and joy of their stable.
In 1995, I was asked to take Echo into training and proceeded to school him on and off for four more years. I was very impressed by his ability to focus, learn and connect. He was no nonsense and sharp in the ring. I rode him to a Top Ten nationally in 1997 and my student Tara Willer Stegeman rode him to a Top Ten in 1999. A few years later, the stable fell on hard times. The couple were elderly. The wife passed away and the husband was diagnosed with lung cancer and Alzheimer’s. Echo and several other horses were at the hands of fate and had to be rescued.
On a freezing cold New Year’s Day - 2009, I called on Carole Hackett and Erin Armbruster to help rescue Echo and six other horses. Walking into the barn on that cold New Year’s Day brought tears to my eyes. We made several trips and managed to get the horses to their new home. All of the horses thrived at their new home and would have a whole new purpose in life. Echo and all the rescued horses began the therapeutic riding and horse rescue organization called “Quest.” Echo has touched the hearts and lives of many; God certainly had His hand in this. I am so appreciative and thankful to all who have tended to the horses and children at Quest! Carol Hackett, Erin Armbruster, Terry Anderson, Tessa Bunn…

Congratulations to Julie and Alex on their induction to the Century Club! The ride was certainly something to witness as Alex, who had been enjoying retirement for quite some time was saddled and began warming up. 30 year old Alex was all business and was quick to show us he was still the champion at heart as he was in his younger years. He still shines!!! This performance was proof of the skilled raising training and riding hours Julie has dedicated to Alex from the day he was born. What a delight to watch Alex and Julie strut their stuff! Congratulations on reaching this milestone! all the accolades are well deserved!

The price of competition
a passion can be comprised by the desire to achieve an illustrious career.
Having been in the horse training business for better than 50 years I have witnessed the good the bad and the down right ugly! And I’m sure this observation may be true in any career. However, when dealing with horses or any animal as a livelihood there is a moral responsibility to the well being of the animals as they depend on everything from a human being.
Accidents do happen, but there is no excuse for a horse that has been pushed beyond limits and grievously injured as a result. We can promote ourselves through beautiful pictures and accolades, as if looking through rose colored glasses, but at what price for the horse.
A horse is not a commodity nor is it a dispensable piece of tissue paper that can’t make the cut. We must all take heed and come back to the passion.

FROM SADDLE TO HAND

If the good hand is a concept of greatest importance in horse riding, it must be recognized that it has, neither in equestrian training nor in the advice of coaches, the place and the importance that it should have. It is true that it is so differently interpreted that it is enough to lose its Latin!
So it will be understandable if I am only skimming the subject today. But getting to the heart of it: What is the right hand in academic riding?

To get to know some difficulties which a dressage rider has to obtain a light and permanent contact I suggested that she allows me to ride her horse for a few minutes to understand the reason.
What was my surprise when I found myself stuck in a very deep saddle generously equipped with knee roles. It seemed to me that here we found the cause or at least one the the causes for the difficulty the rider encountered. And the most serious one.

Is it necessary to remind that there is no good hand without a good seat? And that it is the quality of a seat which allows the flexibility of the loins and hips and which leads to being able to hold the upper body "free and straight" in the saddle.
Nuno Oliveira does not say otherwise when he wanted "a very relaxed waist which must be able to support or give back" He also adds "that the rider must feel the back of the horse in his chest."
This is also valid for this rider I was initially talking about!
At the same time as it connects the riders to the back of their horses, this game of the waist ensures their stability. They thus control their hand, which is no longer affected by parasitic movements. They can then act with precision and expect the horse to accept the hand, respect and follow it.

In fact, centaurization is what you have to think about when you dream of the best possible attitude in the saddle, part of the rider becoming part of the horse's body.
But here a saddle should help, not hinder.

As it is always useful to draw inspiration from the old ones, I am thinking of General Decarpentry's saddle. Madame de Saint André gave it to me after the death of her husband, the last écuyer en chef of the Cavalry School.
I had given it to the museum of this school, believing that it was much better there than in my attic. And by the courtesy of the curator I came back to it these days.
As we can see the seat is rather flat, the pommel not very prominent and there are no knee roles which seem so extremely popular today. The padding is thin.

We know the concern that drives riders to use a saddle that is well suited to the back of their horse. And the care that equipment manufacturers take to satisfy the clients. However, the imagination of the latter should not lead them to offer saddles which may reassure their users, but which do not ensure the essential intimacy which must be established between the backs of the trainers and those of their horses.

Without a good saddle, no good hand. Without a good hand, no good riding.

HOW GENERAL PATTON AND SOME UNLIKELY ALLIES SAVED THE PRIZED LIPIZZANER STALLIONS

How Patton—and a strange cast of Germans, Poles, and Czechs—saved the prized Lipizzaners in the last days of the war.
By KAREN JENSEN9/18/2009

May 7, 1945, was an important day by any measure.

For Gen. George S. Patton, it started early, with a call just after 4 a.m. from Gen. Omar Bradley, who said, “Ike just called me, George. The Germans have surrendered.” This was mixed news to Patton, who was convinced the war was ending too soon, leaving the Russians as a future threat and, in any case, leaving Patton, a man who lived to fight, without a war. “Peace is going to be hell on me,” he had complained to his wife, Beatrice, four days earlier.

1 horse, 3 disciplines and 1 foundation of training: ICS TOP GUN, owned by the late Sherry Rawlings, successfully competed in Dressage, Western Pleasure and Hunter Pleasure.
Classical principles of training will benefit any discipline of horsemanship.
‘Gunner’ was a Morgan horse with heart of gold. ‘Sherry’ loved him dearly and greeted him with peppermints. Sherry’s daughter Mona Rawlings Spoon competed and trail rode Gunner.
Terry Jones of Indian Creek Stables was the breeder.
