Some new additions to Roots! I finally cleaned, organized a decorated my garden room. I love it and Freud loves it too.

Lee got these rolling racks for me to take my plants in and out of the garage easily. This is going to extend my planting season by a couple weeks!

Also, it's Freud's 15th birthday and he's spending it outside in the garden all day.

Garden update! I used wood mulch instead of straw and so far so good!!

Pros:
-excellent soil armor
-excellent w**d suppressor
-excellent water retention and infiltration
-helps build soil over time

Cons:
-need to fertilize more because it takes a lot of nitrogen to start breaking down the mulch
-labor heavy at the beginning (but the workout was worth it)

It's almost tomato time! The first varieties are Crnkovic Yugoslavian, Black Cherry, and Blueberry. Hurry up and turn!

14 hours of scooping, hauling and spreading over 5 days is done! I'm sore and I'm tired. But my garden is ready to be planted.

Based on average weights, Google tells me this was about 15,000 lbs of material. 12 cubic yards of mulch and 6 cubic yards of compost.

This should be plenty of room for year 1 but the garden will definitely grow over the years!

Finished 1 of 5 beds today. This will be a pollinator garden with a small Red Bud Tree in the middle.

12 cubic yards of mulch delivered this morning and 6 cubic yards of compost arriving later today! I have a lot of manual labor ahead of me and my massage is scheduled for Saturday!

My asparagus patch is planted. This patch should provide me with yummy, fresh and healthy asparagus for 20+ years. Fresh layer of compost and mulch to top it off.

I won't be able to harvest any for awhile but it will be well worth the wait.

Also, my peas sprouted!

This weekend is the big weekend. I'm starting to prepare my main garden beds. The goal is to do this without tilling the ground. I rented a sod cutter to remove the grass. The sod will go to my parents house and the rest will be composted and added back to the ground in a year or so. I have 6 cubic yards of compost and 12 cubic yards of mulch being delivered next week. Hopefully that will be enough for four main big beds and a large pollinator/rain garden.

I'll keep you posted!

Roots Urban Farm

It started in containers on a roof and now my goal is not to have any grass. Who needs grass when you can grow food?

We need a food revolution where food production is more than just about profits. It’s about reconnecting with the land and it’s ability to grow life. For the past 5 years I’ve leaped into the world of local food production for a number of reasons. One, simply put - it’s healthier. Two, it tastes better. Three, it’s good for the planet. Four, it feeds the soul.

I am not an expert. This is a journey and one where we’ll learn and hopefully GROW from many, many failures and accidents. That’s life right?

I start all my plants from seeds and in 2018 I’ll be starting over 75 heirloom varieties of vegetables, herbs, and more. And, I’ll be joining my best friend in our first business adventure, @UrbanTwisters, at the Valley Junction Farmers Market.
