The Day of the Dead celebrations begin on October 27, when the souls of the pets who passed away are expected to return to the altar to enjoy their favorite foods and spend some time with their humans.

Doggy heaven got a new angel this morning. 👼

Nisha's battle against lymphoma came to an end today. She fought SO hard and lived so much longer than we could have imagined. She didn't suffer much. Her quality of life was our top priority and she lived a happy life until the very end. She was Nico's lifetime companion and she was my baby. Nisha was the only dog I ever decided to get. I brought her home as a puppy to help with Nico's depression. She was a great companion, wife, and emotional support pup. I'm happy to say that she enjoyed fresh meats in her final days and while she couldn't eat treats anymore, we let her lick our fingers so she could taste the things she craved. Nisha's final days were filled with love. We went on walks and she enjoyed her final trip to the beach on Saturday.
She will be greatly missed and it warms my heart to know that she's reunited with her husband in doggy heaven. May they walk side by side and p*e on all the trees and things forever. 🐾❤️

On Sunday Nisha began having trouble eating. She didn't finish her breakfast on that day. After a couple days of observation, I decided to check with the vet because despite the trouble eating, she is swallowing her food, drinking water, and going potty as normal. The issue seems to be pain in her lips and mouth. So today we're upping her meds significantly. This will keep her much more comfortable. Unfortunately, this is also a bad sign for us because it means that Nisha will be fully medicated 24/7. I'm not sure how many good days we are going to have with her at this point, but she keeps saying to death "not today" 💪

I went to the vet today and the nice lady said that the prednisone has stopped working. I guess that's my mom's cue to let me eat all the food!!!!
I'm feeling fine, but it's a little harder to chew and swallow my food.
Hoping mom gets the hint and feeds me more often! 🤔

Health update:
Last week, I noticed that, at times, Nisha was having trouble chewing and swallowing her treats. This wasn't happening all the time but maybe just during dinner or breakfast one day and then she'd be good for a couple more days.
Well, she was uncomfortable this weekend to the point that I had to give her pain meds on Saturday and Sunday. The additional pain meds sedate her so I don't like giving them to her, but I didn't want her to be in pain.
On my drive home, she was panting because the car was warm and that's when I saw an ulcer in her mouth.
I made an appointment for her at the vet this afternoon to have that checked, but knowing she has I looked it up online and it looks like we're moving into . We will know more after her appointment, but I assume we'll up her meds and continue to make her comfortable and pain free.
She still is engaged and excited about life, food, walks, naps... so that makes me happy.

It's taken me a week to process the information I'm about to share. It's only been 3 months since we lost our little Nico, and now I have to adjust to the reality that Nisha may not make it to next spring.
After months of fighting a lip infection unsuccessful, the vet did a biopsy. The results indicated that she may have cancer, but another test was needed to find out. So she ordered an immunohistochem stain (-) and on Monday last week, the vet informed me that the test showed Nisha has T-cell lymphoma.

"T cell lymphoma (TCL) is a heterogenous group of lymphoid malignancies representing about 30–40% of all canine lymphomas and often harboring a very aggressive behavior." (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2021.600963/full)

We've noticed the aggressive behavior of this cancer. Nisha was in pain, that's what brought us to the vet, and now we know that her lymph nodes are swollen, the area under her tongue is swollen, and probably many areas inside her body that we can't see.

After reading a lot about this cancer, its aggressive behavior, and taking Nisha's health and age into account, I decided to keep her comfortable with medication (gabapentin & prednisone) rather than taking her to an oncologist and treating her with chemotherapy. We also opted to add more supplements to her daily diet to help her with inflammation and pain. She gets glucosamine, CBD oil, omega 3s, multivitamins, and curcumin. Finally, we've switched her to a natural, non-processed, very low-carb diet (since carbs feed the cancer cells) with fresh homemade human-grade protein. As it gets warmer she will also get short daily walks (on her stroller) and lots of sun, I hope.

I am confident we will get many months with Nisha. She's been having really good days since we started giving her medication. I am going to take really good care of her and make her happy every day as if it was her last. While this news is sad, I am grateful to get more time with her so I can spend the remainder of her days with all the love we can give her.

We heard back from the vet. The samples sent to the lab showed cancerous cells. We ordered another test to try to identify which cancer she has. It will probably take another 2 weeks before we get the results. At that point we will need to make some decisions. Depending on what type of cancer it is and how much it's spread, she may need to see an oncologist to discuss chemotherapy or she may be treated with meds to make her comfortable.
Nisha is in great spirits now that she's on all these meds, so I know she was definitely in pain before.
I love seeing her happy!

Baby Nish has not been able to heal from her lip infection and we've been fighting it topically for months. So now she's going to get a biopsy to get a sample of tissue to do a culture and identify exactly what is causing this infection.
We hope this will help us kill it for good. The reality is that Nisha's immune system has been weakening for a few years and I'm afraid we will continue to fight infections from now on. In the last 24 hours, she's been in pain so tomorrow she's going in to get this procedure done and she's also going to get her teeth cleaned. We hope everything goes well.
