Koda the Cheesecake Defender Memorial This page is dedicated to the memory of Koda who was a very much loved member of an every day family

Miss Dixie never liked playing fetch. She only ever liked to steal them from Koda. Our current dogs aren't interested in them either. Koda however - he was a FIEND when it came to that ball!

One year we got him a bucket of tennis balls - a 40 count I believe. He made that one bucket last for years. I think it was a magical regenerating bucket lol

The other day as I was re-packing up some things from a broken box, out rolled one of his tennis balls. Instant tears. I picked it up and the air around me changed. It was full of intent energy, like it was when Koda saw one of us pick up his ball. I couldn't help myself. I went outside, hurled the ball as far as I could and said, "Go get it!"

The energy zipped away, leaving me flat. Of course, Koda wasn't there to retrieve the ball for me, so I had to go and get it myself. But for one brief moment, if I closed my eyes, I could feel his nose on my hand and hear his half bark as I picked the ball up. For one brief moment, I could pretend that time had rewound a little and he was there with me again, eager to chase that ball as long as I was able to throw it.

Ghost Koda: ssst, Freyja! MacTyr!
Puppies: huh?
Ghost Koda: You pups are falling down on the job! Start barking!! Show Mom what's going on outside the chicken pen!
Puppies: We aren't allowed at the chicken pen though?
Ghost Koda: *snapping at the Puppies noses* I SAID BARK!

Puppies :*yip and yarp then start barking ferociously at the doors*

Mom: All right already, let's go look.

Mom and Puppies discover a kangaroo buck (well over 6' tall) in the act of breaking and entering.
Mom: Get out of that!
Puppies: *barking as if their lives are on the line*

Mom: OK, he's gone now, settle down.

Ghost Koda: Good job pups. Mom said settle down *Puppies keep barking* ...
Ghost Koda grumbles and then snarls: SETTLE!

Puppies yip but settle down.

Mom stares at the shadows in the garden suspiciously: Good night Koda, I miss you.

Ghost Koda: Good night Mom but I didn’t leave.

Koda would be so proud!

OMG - dunno if I should laugh or be mortified! Longer story, stick with it!

Had MacTyr out for a social today. On the way in to town, on the far side of the highway, we saw a huge line up of cops doing a random breath test checkpoint. (I was mildly glad they weren't interested in my side of the highway!)

As we were heading home a few hours later, I had the idle notion, wouldn't it be funny if they were still there? Guess what. Yup, there they were - bright and shiny!

Since Mac rides in the cab with me when I'm alone, I held up my hand (standard 'STOP' motion) to the approaching body and said, loudly and clearly, "I have a BIG dog in my car."

The cop said, "That's all right." and kept walking towards me. That's when Mac saw her and stood up.
She stopped instantly and her very wide eyes locked on Mac.

"Is he friendly?!"

😅😂🤣 I mean. Yeeeessss.... and No. Mac is NEVER friendly towards strangers when he is in the car!!
I told her, "Just don't stick your hands IN the car."

Ever try to do a breath test without them sticking their hands at least close? She stood at arms length from me and I could only JUST blow into the machine.

She walked away and only when she turned her back did he bark. SHE didn’t jump, but the cop in front of her did!!

LOL Mac certainly made that stop interesting!

Do you remember the mama and baby wallaby from early in August? The mama -unfortunately - had to be euthanised, but baby is doing good!

Little Lorikeet has a broken wing. Luckily, we have access to an avian vet who took the Cheeky little darling off for surgery. We will keep you updated when we know.
And while all that was happening, we answered another call for a mama and joey rescue.

Koda is often the subject of discussion in our family, and occasionally friends too. A repeated phrase describing him is how well trained he was.

I laugh each time, because a LOT of time, love and attention went into 'training' over the years. In fact, for the first 4 to 5 years, we heard many comments on how poorly trained he was! His behaviour never changed tho. Koda was the same at nearly 15 years as he was at 5 years only slower.

I tell people it's not fair to compare how Koda behaved as an older dog (which is how everyone best remembers him!) to how our current pups (2 year old Irish Wolfhoundx) act now. They haven't got the same seasoning as Koda did.

We miss him still.
