Check out this sneak peek of the pretty brown jenny #3078! She is actually the perfect subject for a video series I’m working on showcasing how Matt and I gentle and train wild burros. This jenny is very nervous and defensive, and she made some great improvements in this session. My hope is that by sharing what we’ve learned, we can help others stay safe while working with their newly adopted burros ❤️
Also I need help with a name for her… drop your suggestions below! ⬇️
I decided to name this sweet guy “Elvis”, because I know there’s a confident, show-stopping ladies man in there somewhere! ❤️😍

This is “Ernie”, a BLM burro that came to us for gentling and basic groundwork. It took him a bit of time to come out of his shell, but he’s a sweet boy and he’s been fun to work with! What makes his story even sweeter is that his mom adopted my TIP challenge burro Margarita! They are smitten with each other and I’m so happy they get to live out their days together 🥰
Yogi showing off how quietly he loads and unloads, specifically backwards which is a huge deal for him! ❤️ I’ve loved working with this mule, I sure will miss him when he goes home
Week 3 ~ Manny is doing great! I’m enjoying our time together more and more every day 💕 We got up to 6 rides and then cinch itch (a skin fungus) appeared, along with a head cold for myself, so we’ve spent the last few days taking it easy and working on groundwork. He has very smooth gaits and definitely the “more whoa than go” type. Looking forward to another week with this handsome guy 😍
Days 15/16: Saturday morning we headed over to the Zimmermans for a weekend clinic. I always know we are going to make progress when we visit Matt Zimmerman, but this weekend surpassed my expectations. Matt helped knock out a few issues I was having and taught me a handful of tricks to add to my toolbox. Matt also put the first ride on Manny on Saturday! 🤩 I was so grateful for that; Manny is not a bucker but he was so sure he didn’t need to lope and would kick out pretty high in protest. It took 3 people on the ground with tarps/flags to get him moving! 🐢 I am so thankful Matt helped Manny through that. Then on Sunday we continued where we left off, and Manny got his second and third rides! Matt started with Manny at first and then I hopped on. I am still on cloud 9! ⛅️ I can’t believe this mustang was untouched 2 weeks ago… I am so grateful that Matt and Stacie Perko Zimmerman allowed me to come and get some much needed guidance and increase in my confidence. It was an amazing weekend! ❤️

✔️ I will be transitioning to Manny updates on a weekly basis from now on! Thank you all for following and all of your support!
Day 14: Manny got ground driven today for the first time! 🤩 I put a lot of hours into prepping him for this and while he is packing the snaffle, I decided to attach the reins to his halter just so he didn’t feel too claustrophobic. He did so good with me behind him and was so quiet with the ropes around his hind legs. We are trucking along! 🛻
Day 13: Today was another big change for Manny. I felt like he was actually happy to see me and didn’t snort or bolt when I went to catch him. He’s showing more of his personality too; friendly and goofy gelding. It’s the little things that sometimes feel like the biggest breakthroughs 🥰❤️
Day 12: Much better day today! 💕 Manny got saddled again and did super following his nose around to rein pressure on both the left and right side.
Day 8: Yesterday was another busy day but Manny got to spend a lot of time standing tied and watching everyone else work 👀
Day 9: I finally felt I had prepped Manny enough for the surcingle tonight (lots and lots of desensitizing, tightening my lead rope around his barrel, sacking out with everything I could get my hands on, spending hours of time rubbing his body). Once it was on and the boat bumpers were attached, he couldn’t have cared less… 😮💨 😁 He also took and packed the snaffle so nicely. He really is a good one, he tries super hard for me ❤️
Day 7: We hauled and stacked hay today but I still managed to sneak in my usual two sessions with Manny, even if they were short and sweet 🧁 I wanted to share just a small part of our evening, this is the first time ever doing this exercise with him. I love how thoughtful he is with his feet and how he follows pressure to find the release.
Day 6: Moving right along! This video shows his somewhat slow legged and lazy nature, but I also hope it shows how soft and “feely” he is getting 💙
Day 5: Manny had a great day today! We ventured out and got some much appreciated help from Matt Zimmerman, thank you Matt!!! 🙏🏻 🤠 We came home and put his new skills to work, specifically loading and unloading from the trailer, leading and picking up feet. It was so cool to watch Matt work with Manny; it gave me such a confidence boost and lots of new ideas of what to work on in the next few days. Manny returned home more relaxed and eager for my attention for the first time. He even got to get scratches from my hubby 💙
Day 4: I finally got my hands on Manny past his head today! ⭐️ It took working him over really good with a tarp and wearing a bridle for a little distraction to get to that point, but his eyes softened so much and it felt like a major step in the right direction. He is also getting better at disengaging his hip and facing me. He just keeps getting more and more handsome the gentler he gets! 💙
Day 3: Manny is the mustang that I needed ❤️ I tend to move too quietly and my horses get overly sensitive/spooky. He reminded me of this today and so I’ve decided to put in a real effort to let loose a little bit, I think it’s working for both of us! Though I’m pretty sure he thinks I’m a weirdo 🤪🙈
Please enjoy the video posted below in the comments of his third day living the domesticated life 👇 It includes some raw, real footage of the reality of training mustangs, as well as his successes. He made some great progress today!
Day 2: He’s making me work for it but I think he’s going to be a good one 😊
*** Adopted! Thank you to all that shared this post! ***
