Working Guy for his food this morning

Reintroducing gearing up and introducing body awareness exercises.
Starting with walking in big circles and the end result will be him moving when I move and turning when I turn. I feel like not enough people show the sloppy start to introducing new things to their dogs. This is where Guy is starting and where he’ll end is weeks and months of work ahead.

Guy got to meet potential placement today!

We talked about symptoms of his disability so I can get a feel for possible tasks and contract stuff. While it’s important to match dogs with their people via lifestyle etc, I also think it’s important for clients to LIKE their service dog I’m training. This isn’t a pet, Guy will be a highly trained dog who is legally medically equipment if he passes all his training and health tests. I want his future handler to not only get help, but like who is helping them.

This doesn’t mean Guy is leaving me for a new home now or that he’s spoken for. Just means he has someone interested while he keeps training here.

🐕What do you work on?
I specialize in service dog task work/public access skills and reactive/bite risk dogs. I do not work with resource guarding. I only take one board and train at a time to ensure they get all my focus.
🐕How long is it?
Board and trains last 4 weeks, typically the 1st-29th.
🐕Where will my dog stay?
All board and trains rotate between being crated and being worked with/walked in a designated dog room in my home.

Guy attended our yearly

He got to say hi to first responders and some BACA members and see some farm animals and carnival rides. I had little expectations of him this trip. We just went and let him explore and hang out. He only got spooked by one thing and it was a large swinging carnival ride that swung right over our heads as we were passing. He was great and confident and friendly majority of this trip and needed little reassuring. That’s why I picked him out as my next placement dog. He’s got a presence and walks with purpose.
Can’t wait to see how he matures and helps his future person.

Introducing Ollie

Ollie is a dog bite risk and lunger so we’re going to be working on heeling, recall, engagement, exposure and possibly muzzle training. It’s 50/50 if he’s reactive I’ve been told and so far I haven’t seen it, he doesn’t mind Fenrir being at our sessions as of now.
We’re swapping out his chain for a slip lead to hopefully make it easier on his owner.

Guy’s embark results!

Guess now or forever hold your peace.

He is …
Nearly 50/50 Labrador retriever and American pitbull terrier.

Pretty much exactly what I guessed. Embark does some accurate DNA testing and genetic panels for health as well. According to them he is a carrier for a couple diseases. A carrier means he is not affected, but if he was bred then he could pass on those diseases (specifically with another carrier). Good thing he will be altered and isn’t a breeding dog. Next health panels on my list are OFAs to make sure his bones are strong and healthy to work.

I took Guy to an appt with me since it’s just us and I could let him figure some things out without being a hassle to others.

He heeled very well through the building, but had some difficulty figuring out how to settle. Which I’m not holding against him at all since training is very minimum with him and we just started settle training. At the end of my appt I let him say hi to someone and we’ve been working on not jumping so instead he tried to gently crawl into her lap xD

I think this was the first outing Guy had, but definitely his first non pet friendly outing.
My criteria for SDiTs to be in non pet friendly situations is
•potty trained
•reliable heeling
•no reactivity/ easy to distract and engage with

Guy struggled with his heeling at the market today, but he was doing much better with regulating his over excitement towards dogs.
His reactions aren’t severe or often enough to label him reactive, he just occasionally pulls and whines to try and play. Today though he was offering lots of disengaging and taking treats and responding to recalls.

His embark results will be in this month some time and we can find out his breed mix and health stuff. At two he’ll be OFA tested (and then neutered) to make sure his bones are healthy to work. Until then we let him puppy and work on basic skills and then advance to public access skills before looking for placement.

I am also looking for a temporary puppy raiser for him so if you’re close by and want to help message me for details.

Introducing Guy

Guy is approx 7 month male who is another placement dog for service work. Because he’s younger than I was expecting to get I am also looking for a volunteer puppy raiser. Someone to essentially own him until January so we can start skills for his future career. Their job is to just let him be a puppy and expose him to the world appropriately.
