“You can just register him”
“Walmart is pet friendly”
“It’s not a big deal”
“Well my dog is friendly”
“It’s just a quick trip”

Bringing pets into non pet friendly places is illegal.
Faking your pet as a service dog is illegal.
Your ten second selfish decision risked thousands of dollars in a legitimate service dog’s career. Your ten second selfish decision stressed your dog out so much they attacked a child because you never thought your dog would bite. Your ten second selfish decision encouraged others to bring their pets in places they shouldn’t be and aren’t trained to handle.

Registration/certification is a scam in the USA. It has no legal standing. What makes a dog a service dog? The handler must be disabled and the dog must be tasked trained to mitigate that disability. When in public the dog has to be UNDER CONTROL and potty trained. Your dog lunging at my dog that’s worth 10,000$ is not under control. If void was attacked she could’ve lost her career. She could’ve been seriously injured. She could’ve became reactive and reactivity is dangerous.

Keep your pets out of places they aren’t allowed to be in. If not for respect of the law, then respect for your pet and the safety of others. It’s unlikely you spent years training that dog to handle the stress of the public. Stressed dogs bite. Dogs that bite are euthanized. For the safety of your pet, don’t bring them into non pet friendly places or places they can not handle even if it is pet friendly.

Our new banner design for future events, like another school demo we’ve done in the past

My logo is my dog Moki who passed November last year. I wanted my other dog, Fenrir, who is a lot more recognizable by clients because he’s my demo dog. I wanted him to be involved as well and since he’s the dog I’ll be doing demos with I thought a banner for him would be cool. It is recreated from a picture my friend took of us last year when we were training for his BH-VT

All of these dogs are mobility service dogs(in training)

From left to right

Lilly- a Boston terrier mix, training to pick things up, carry things, retrieve things, pull her owners wheelchair, etc

Fenrir- an Irish setter, trained to provide counterbalance (when he feels pressure he pulls the opposite way), he picks things up, fetches my cane, helps me sit or stand up, etc

Void- a giant schnauzer mix, training to provide counter balance, carry things, retrieve things, pick things up, pull a wheelchair, etc and is available for placement 👀

Mobility service dogs help by providing tasks for mobility impaired people. Not just their legs, but maybe also their hands. Maybe someone has extremely weak hands and can not open doors or hold things. Mobility service dogs help people who do not have a body that functions how it should mobility wise.
Remember- a disability is a set of symptoms that limits your daily life and that is the requirement for acquiring a service dog.

Reintroducing Mary Jo

Mary Jo was a service dog in training when she was a puppy, she was supposed to come to me when she got older to finish her mobility training. However due to no fault of her own, needed to be rehomed before she would come back to finish and was graciously donated to me so I can continue her training and pair her with a disabled handler.
If you are disabled and have been looking for a service dog to help you with everyday activities, message me to see if Mary Jo is a good fit for you! Mary Jo will be continuing as a mobility dog and will be trained with canes, walkers/rollators and wheelchairs.

Mary Jo is a giant schnauzer/standard poodle. She was born June 19, 2022.

This post will be pinned and updated as needed.

Today me and Maggie went to the farmers market and she demoed for me for an AKC eval.

She helped a dog pass her CGC test, took a nap, trained, got groomed, played, trained and napped XD

“Hey Alayna? Can I borrow you tomorrow morning to eval a bite risk? He’s had two bites since being here.”

I go expecting a dangerous dog and I’m greeted by a very food and toy motivated friendly dog who rubs against me for pets. He just has barrier frustration and is touch sensitive. Luckily this dog is being transferred out of the shelter soon.

Not every dog who has bitten is aggressive- and typically that is not the case. Aggression in my experience is rare- true aggression. Bites are usually done out of excitement and the dog not knowing how strong they are, fear (including resource guarding) to get you to go away, pain to get you to stop touching them or redirection where they’re full of adrenaline and bite you instead of dealing with their overstimulation.

A bite does not equal aggression

Let’s play a game

Here are some dogs I’ve worked with over the past couple years.
Which one is reactive?

Based off just pictures, which one is the reactive dog? Trick question because the answer is all of them. Every single one of these dogs came to me to work on reactivity. You can not judge a dog’s appearance that because some of them look fluffy they are not dangerous.

Some of these dogs were excited reactive and lunged and barked to say hi to everything. This is dangerous. Some of these dogs were fearful reactive and lunged and barked to get you to go away. This is dangerous.

Reactivity does not have a breed. Genetics and training equally play a role. It is not one or the either and certainly is NOT “all how you raise them”

Worked with Oswald today

Oswald is reactive to people and dogs. Lunging, barking, fixating, tripping over himself to keep his eyes on his target. He’s not a bite risk, but the behavior is still dangerous and not fun to deal with for the owners or Oswald himself. I don’t think it’ll take long though before he can do more fun things without being stressed by existing outside.

Contrary to popular belief you can have an intact female and an intact male in the same house and NOT have puppies. Crazy right?

Things we do to avoid unwanted puppies..
•crate and rotate
Both dogs get time in their crates, out of their crates, with me and even time together. But anytime they’re together there’s supervision

•supervised play
For the most part all play should be supervised. But when you have two dogs capable of breeding then my watch sharpens a bit. Anytime Lilly or Fenrir steps out of bounds the accused stands trial and is crated. Like Fenrir being a bit too smelly for my liking or Lilly being a bit too flirtatious for my liking

•no unsupervised time no matter how short it is
If I leave the room BOTH dogs are crated. Not just one. I’ve seen dogs somehow get impregnated through crates. So whenever I leave even just for a bathroom break or a five second water run, both dogs are crated.

•bonus
Having a dog like Fenrir who values my word extensively really helps. We have a good relationship and he listens well because of the high reinforcement rate in his life. If he gets a bit pushy, like smelling her crotch for what I feel too long, when I say to give her space he generally listens and goes to lay down somewhere. The few times he is stubborn about it I put him in his crate and reward him.

Basically crating and NO unsupervised time. It’s not hard 🤫

Misconceptions the average people have about purebred dogs

•purebred dogs are all in**ed to keep the bloodline pure.
Good breeders keep detailed pedigrees and do not allow inbreeding of their animals. They find ways to separate inheat females from their intact males to ensure accidental breedings do not happen. In**ed animals, just like people, eventually causes severe health/mental issues

•they’re unhealthy because they aren’t mixed to protect against a variety of illnesses. Genetics matter even with mixed breeds. If you breed two sick dogs mentally or physically then the puppies will be sick. Including body structure deformations. Hip dysplasia, epilepsy, OCD, aggression, etc. Good breeders health test their dogs and only breed healthy dogs to produce healthy dogs. They also temperament test and do not breed mentally unsafe dogs.

•the breeders only in it for the money.
BYB (back yard breeders) are the only breeders who generally breed for money. That’s because they breed two dogs they want puppies from regardless of any issues and sell them for pricing not worth a sick puppy.

•they aren’t worth the money.
I’d rather pay 2500$ for a dog who is bred to a standard and health/temperament tested than a 50$ shelter dog someone lied about not biting a child so they could rehome it. Do not get me wrong, there’s tons of really good shelter dogs. But I know nothing about them other than the supposed story. I have no idea how healthy they are or what breed they are- and genetics matter.
Purebred wellbred dogs are bred to be a specific size with a specific temperament. It’s easier to choose what kind of dog you want when you KNOW how they will end up size wise and personality wise.

Why does it matter what dog you choose to be a service dog?

The dog needs a good temperament and needs good drive. ✨genetics✨
And a LOT of dogs do not have both.
If you have the work drive then you don’t have the temperament. You’ll have a dog who can do all the obedience and tasks easily, but when it comes to temperament… they’re scared of everything. Or dog aggressive. Or child hostile. Etc
If you have the temperament then you don’t have the work drive. You’ll have a dog who is naturally neutral to everything in their environment. Recovers quickly from scares, natural settle, ignores people and dogs, adapts quickly to new things. But when it comes to training… teaching them to do DPT is impossible because they won’t lure. Or teaching them to do retrievals is harder than it needs to be because they won’t put their mouth on anything. Etc.

And then a unicorn falls into your lap. With the temperament and work drive. A dog who is teachable and easily. A dog who doesn’t need behavioral work to be confident enough or be calm enough.
That’s why so many dogs wash out from this career and why it’s so important you pick the right dog.

Do not rush the process of finding the right dog.

Toby having his first non pet friendly PA today

I wanted to wait because he didn’t meet my 3 requirements fully for taking SDiTs in non pet friendly locations. But I caved and took a risk and he did great. I know where we need some work and let me tell you- it is definitely not confidence. This man didn’t give any cares about the new environment, busy people, carts, noises, etc.

Toby mans getting more exposure to public places
As of now the most work he needs is on heeling. He has a natural settle, he’s aloof to people and dogs within reason and that’s where most of our time goes when I’m working with service dog clients. Heeling, settling, ignoring people and dogs and exposure. But Toby is a natural at most of this.

I think with some more work on ignoring food his first non pet friendly location may be a restaurant.

Lilly is becoming a rockstar at advancing her heel!

Her owner has been struggling with getting Lilly to stay in her heel and moving in heel so today we worked on rewarding her staying and luring. Lilly is getting really good at swiveling herself where she needs to be, we just need to work on her staying there, but after tweaking some handler errors I think next week she’ll have made decent progress. Good job guys!

Toby is a service dog in training to hopefully be Bella’s successor.
After I made the decision to wash Bella due to extreme fear, my friend at our local animal shelter brought oatmeal (Toby) to my attention. And he has a temperament we just couldn’t pass up!
He’ll be with me for January getting public skills for his future career.

What’s a service dog?

In the USA a service *animal* is a civilian working animal. They are any breed of dog or miniature horse that is tasked trained to assist people with disabilities. Including, but not limited to, schizophrenia, blindness, deafness, those who use mobility aids, PTSD, anxiety disorders and epilepsy etc.
service animals must be potty trained and under control of their handler to be in public.

Service animals are not pets- they’re working animals and because they aid disabled people they are legally classified as medical equipment. Which is why it is dangerous and illegal to harm them and purposefully distract them from their job.

In the USA there is no legal certification or registration for service animals. The only things that makes them a service animal is their disabled handler and being trained for that handler. Registration is a SCAM
