Void had probably the longest day of her life

This morning we drove to the city to go to an oddities expo where she did fantastic. Ignoring crowds and dogs and settling fast and getting up to move without complaint. Afterwards we attended a friends graduation and then out for food and a trip to target. She gave no cares for the long day and received many compliments at the expo.

Also peep the new equipment. Her handler needs extra help because void is figuring out she can get away with some behaviors that aren’t appropriate. So we reintroduced a head halter for the handler’s comfort and safety.

Void and Mickey taking on Walmart

This was their first official non pet friendly outing together and I joined to help Mickey be more confident in handling void and how to handle some situations. First time handlers usually are very anxious to work their dog in general, but especially in non pet friendly PA. What if my dog makes a mistake? What if there’s a pet or fake service dog? What if my dog greets someone? What if what if what if. Let me say, you and your dog are allowed to take up space. You’re allowed to confront people. Trust your dog. Trust how they handle their environment. And know that dogs don’t know what is and isn’t pet friendly. If your dog is perfect in lowes it’s likely they’ll behave the same in Walmart. Have confidence in yourself and your dog.

Void has her OFA testing at the end of the month and next month she’ll be spayed.
She’s been spending more time with her owner learning how the household works, learning how to interact with the other dog and cats, learning how to work with someone other than me. They’ve gotten to the point where void will task at times, but we’re still transferring tasks over and being slow with it so we get it right. While she’s with me we’ve gone back to basics for a bit to freshen up foundations.

Today me and Duke started to close out his board with a bang by joining our animal shelter in the home coming parade

In my experience with Duke on day 1 he was resource guarding. He was resource guarding his crate and ANY food or chews. Anytime Fenrir was in sight Duke would lunge and growl and fixate in his crate. He bit Fenrir a couple of times resource guarding (Fenrir is fine, he even solicited play with Duke today outside for their morning potty break).
Now Fenrir can exist in the room with Duke crated and Duke only has a problem when Fenrir ventures within 2-3’ of his crate when he has food. Duke doesn’t resource guard the crate outside of it anymore and he’s very willing to disengage when asked.
Does this mean he’s “fixed”? No. This means his resource guarding isn’t as dramatic anymore and it still needs management. I think it’s totally fine to not “fix” every behavior and just manage it sometimes. Besides, resource guarding is pretty complex and in four weeks I can not “fix” it and make it go away for the rest of his life. But in four weeks I can muzzle train and make some progress so his owners can help him in the future.

“I don’t want to muzzle train because then my dog can’t be a dog”

A properly fitted muzzle allows a dog to take treats, pant and drink water. The only thing it limits is your dogs mouth to outside of the muzzle. Muzzled dogs are loved and have responsible owners. Muzzled dogs can eat treats. They can play. They can drink. They can be hot comfortably.

I had Oswald for the day

We did a lot of exposure for his reactivity of people and dogs. His reactivity has changed so much from when I first met him, we just need to increase his confidence being out and about.

Void’s placement day is late February.
That gives us 5 months where we are continuing all the tasks we have and advancing them.
We have to solidify them in various places in various situations and wean treats off.

5 months until she’s permanent with her new owner and helping in everyday activities.

Void spent her first night at her new handler’s house.
I was told it went very well! And as usual she does much better when I’m not involved XD

I’ve known void since she was a puppy and recently she’s been with me since July 4th. So when we do sessions together void is focusing more on me than her handler.

A couple sleepovers while we continue sessions together to transfer over skills will be helpful in bonding void. After these two pass their CGCs to prove to me they can handle each other in public settings then we will start the transfer of tasks.

Happy birthday to my demo dog Fenrir!

He’s four years old today. Fenrir has helped so many of your dogs and their reactivity. He’s helped fearful dogs realize not every dog is out to get them. He’s helped bite risks work on neutrality. He’s helped over excited dogs focus more on their handlers.

He’s also helped lots of people learn about service dogs! How to interact with them, what questions business can ask and when they can kick unruly dogs out.
He’s helped people learn about sports and working dogs as well.

He’s a great helper and a vital part to leash wonders training

Bringing pets into non pet friendly places is illegal.
Faking your pet as a service dog is illegal.
Your ten second selfish decision risked thousands of dollars in a legitimate service dog’s career. Your ten second selfish decision stressed your dog out so much they attacked a child because you never thought your dog would bite. Your ten second selfish decision encouraged others to bring their pets in places they shouldn’t be and aren’t trained to handle.

Registration/certification is a scam in the USA. It has no legal standing. What makes a dog a service dog? The handler must be disabled and the dog must be tasked trained to mitigate that disability. When in public the dog has to be UNDER CONTROL and potty trained. Your dog lunging at my dog that’s worth 10,000$ is not under control. If void was attacked she could’ve lost her career. She could’ve been seriously injured. She could’ve became reactive and reactivity is dangerous.

Keep your pets out of places they aren’t allowed to be in. If not for respect of the law, then respect for your pet and the safety of others. It’s unlikely you spent years training that dog to handle the stress of the public. Stressed dogs bite. Dogs that bite are euthanized. For the safety of your pet, don’t bring them into non pet friendly places or places they can not handle even if it is pet friendly.

How’s the placement dog?

Void has been here for just over 3 weeks. In that time she’s been evaluated for her suitability to continue being a SDiT. She’s been tested with walkers, rollators, canes and wheelchairs and does well with all of them.

Our new banner design for future events, like another school demo we’ve done in the past

My logo is my dog Moki who passed November last year. I wanted my other dog, Fenrir, who is a lot more recognizable by clients because he’s my demo dog. I wanted him to be involved as well and since he’s the dog I’ll be doing demos with I thought a banner for him would be cool. It is recreated from a picture my friend took of us last year when we were training for his BH-VT
