A strong topline is one of the most important indicators of a well-conditioned horse. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing and supporting performance, a good topline can protect your working horse from strain and injury.

- When my instructor repeats to me: ′′Straighten your shoulders and open your chest!” He’s not just teaching me how to stand up. He's teaching me that in life we should always walk straight and face problems head on.

- When my instructor asks me to lower my legs and keep them close to the horse, he teaches me that in life we do not allow distractions and that little is enough to deviate from his path.

- When my instructor tells me "Too much hand, don't hang on to the reins! "He teaches me to give and not to take, with the greatest respect of others.

- When he yells and repeats endlessly: "Look forward in the direction you want to go!” He teaches me the importance of setting goals and never losing sight of them to achieve them.

- When I ask to move up or do more and my instructor says I'm not ready, he teaches me that in life you must always respect your rhythm and never skip the steps.

- When I fall and get back up, I learn that there are always setbacks, times when we back up, but the important thing is to get up more determined than before.

- If I hold my breath during a ride and he jokingly tells me "breathe! You are purple!” I understand that you have to let your emotions flow in order to get rid of them.

- When at the end of the course I am happy with the work done and my instructor says to me′ ′Well done, thank your teacher′′ I know he is not referring to himself but to my horse.

- Now you, you who are watching a rider pass in the saddle, keep saying that riding is not a sport because it is the horse that does everything. I agree. Horse riding is not a sport. It is a life lesson.

To help move your horse sideways in leg-yield, imagine you are an ice skater …

You push off with one leg toward your other foot, stepping and putting your weight to the side, like an inside foot to an ice skater. Also, you cannot collapse at the waist, or you would fall.

Please stop rewarding bad behavior and babying a 1200 pound animal. We get a lot of horses in training where people give you a long list of “behaviors” that they are justifying as playful and not disrespectful.. When in fact they are disrespectful.

Cookies and sedation are the two biggest enemies in this world. Stop sedating your horse for every stressful situation THEY WILL NEVER LEARN. Sedation is a helpful tool under circumstances, but not under “my horse gets nervous for the farrier” “there was fireworks” Desensitize your horse and teach it right from wrong, it is disrespectful..

It is not cute when your horse puts its open mouth on your arm trying to ask for a treat. It is not cute when your horse is pawing to china in a cross tie because it has no patience. Sadly, it is the humans fault NOT the horses. Too many horses have now been turned dangerous with a bad reputation becasue that is what a human once taught that horse was acceptable.

When I’m working a horse in the round pen, or saddling, or just grooming I want that horse to look at me as a teammate, NOT as a vending machine. Pockets full of treats to head in to “work” your horse is not achieving anything other than making yourself look like a life size carrot. After your workout, there is nothing wrong with a treat to reward a successful day, but don’t revolve your exercise around it.

As a community we need to be better. The saying “they just don’t make them like that anymore” is wrong in the horse world, they do make them like that and they are being ruined in the wrong hands..

The why

"I would ride every morning before I went to the studio. I learned to jump before 'National Velvet' because I just loved the feeling of flying. I could jump six feet ba****ck and it was the closest thing to being Pegasus and flying next to God. It’s the most liberating freedom-making feeling in the world." —Elizabeth Taylor

Proud of my show team and the effort they are putting into develop their horses and their skills as trainers and future equine enthusiasts . What a great team! I love seeing each one grow with each passing lesson, week, show, month, and season. Proud of the parents and now friends supporting these kids. Thank you for being part of my “Village”!
