We have the lovely Mylo here for the week. He’s almost 8 months now. He’s going to be big. He’s an American Bulldog. His owners are doing wonderful with his training. No dogs are permitted on the beds or on the furniture in my home. Any dog is welcome to board at my home if well behaved. They have free roam if well behaved and obedient.

Hello everyone. I am organising a Canine First Aid Workshop. Rachel Bean who will be running it is a registered Veterinary Nurse with over 25 years experience. It would be 4.5 hours long. I will provide the Venue and drinks/snacks. It is £60 per person. It comes with a certificate. The date I have is Saturday 16th March. Time to be arranged. Would anyone be interested?

A nice little walk this morning, ALWAYS remember to check your equipment, you should be able to get 2 fingers under your dog’s collar. Well done to Clare who remained calm with the loose dog. Hopefully that owner will have learnt a lesson today. See you all soon.

There is nothing natural about large numbers of unfamiliar dogs partaking in high-intensity activity in a dog park, and this shouldn’t be the benchmark for a social dog. If your dog is not their best in such an environment, you are not doing anything wrong. 👏👏 There is nothing wrong with your dog. 👏👏 Your dog is normal. 👏👏

Ralph has been here for the weekend, some appropriate social interactions. Settling on his own, bit of recall, bit of sit-steady and general playing and confidence building. He’s been really good.

A wet walk this morning. We still train in the rain! Some nice attention today. See you all next time. Practice your heel position at home. Loose lead by your side heel position with focus is what we are always aiming for. Make sure your dog truly understands where you want them to be.

Barley and his owners have had 3 sessions, today was no 4. I took Mandy. He was a puller, a lunger, a barker and has pulled his owner over in the past. Teaching our dogs to be calm in the presence of other dogs is massively under-rated. He did well today, no barking, no lunging, minimal pulling and good control from his owner. They will hopefully be joining the walks soon.

We have the lovely Frank with us for the night. We haven’t seen him for a while but he just slots right in.

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a good summer. Walks will be back on from Sunday 3rd September. They will be fortnightly. Hope to see you all and some new faces. Group walks are beneficial and teach our dogs to be calm in the presence of other dogs, build our confidence and improve our handling. Basic obedience also. 1-1’s must be done before joining the group walks. Thankyou.

Session no 4 with the lovely Hugo and his owners. They have been doing all the work and putting in the time, effort and persistence. Recall is coming on nicely with distractions and appropriate interactions with dogs. I took Mandy on the session today and after initial P’s and Q’s he behaved impeccably. They have since had a baby too and everything is going smoothly. I love seeing the progress made. They will hopefully be on the Sunday walks soon.

This has been a bit of a topic for me lately.
To cover or not to cover a dog crate. For me personally I do not cover. Nor place anything on top of it. It’s not a table. Reasons-
I live in a house, my dog lives inside the house, it is comfortable room temperature. I want my dogs to learn to see things and not react and control their impulses and stay in one place. I prefer my dogs cooler than warmer, they can always curl around themselves and get warm. It’s not a prison it’s a place with lots of “windows” so the dog can see clearly out. Often people dislike them and then have no problem shutting their dog inside a room. I never close interior doors in my house where a dog is. My crate is spacious, airy and not in a draft, my dogs can see out on 3 sides. I NEVER cover.

Dogs can overheat. They don’t sweat like a human. They release heat through panting and through their nose and pads of their feet. Think about this-
A dog living inside the house, comfortable room temperature. A crate covered, a blanket inside, a bed, then a dog with fur on. Where is all that heat going? Where is it getting out? It’s like a sauna to some dogs. Think about what you are doing, how is the dog feeling? how much can they see? How much heat are you creating? Crates are alway a subject when starting a training journey and my personal preference is NO to covering. I realise there are exceptional cases, but most of the time it’s a don’t for me.

Everyday is a school day, some days we learn a little some days we learn a lot. This wee girl has missed out quite a bit on environment and social etiquette. She is still worried about traffic and day to day noises. I have her at lunchtimes this week for some training so today I took her to the Brackenwood Golf Course. A nice open space, She had a blast. First of all she travelled really well in the car, a short 5 minute ride. She learnt to follow me, walk and run in long grass, see some dogs and have appropriate interactions, and walk past men and women. Less worry and more happy today. A good positive experience. She’s such a lovely dog

Jimmy passed his Good Citizen Silver.
To train a dog you have to last longer than the dog, you have to be persistent. Giving in or giving up isn’t an option. No one can give you the right relationship with your dog, you have to earn it yourself. A decent trainer can guide you, demonstrate to you, and point out where the problems are, but they cannot wave a magic wand and make your relationship right. You have to do it. Be sure you’re not a quitter before you get a dog. Take a good look at yourself and be honest.
