Today we are starting the “here” cue with the puppies. We want them to simply touch our fingers. Once we have that, our next behavior we will begin to chain is to have them automatically sit after they touch our fingers. This cue is used instead of the word “come”. The reason we teach “here” instead of “come” is often times a single behavior becomes associated to something else. For example you call a puppy to come and them put them in the crate and you leave. The puppy then associates come with you leaving. By teaching a chained behavior there is a lesser chance of that happening.
Today we are introducing water to the puppies by placing them in a shallow bath. Many are under the assumption that all dogs (especially labs and goldens) love water. That is not the case! Many times it starts with their beginning association of the water. We use the water in a very calm manner to teach them the difference in feeling calm and easy to feeling alert and anxious. We will use the water at various levels throughout the puppies training.
When our puppies first arrive we do an Early Scent Test. This test is done over the course of 12 days and 12 different scents. We use four calming, four environmental, and four stimulating scents. This helps us with a blueprint for the puppies learning, socialization, and focus abilities. We use that to build upon each puppy learning over the next 4 weeks.
