Control = freedom ๐
Okay - I don't like the word control but I think it's the simplest way to put it.
I've noticed a trend in dog training recently where some trainers are advocating for less training, demonising obedience training and suggesting we let our dogs just be dogs.
I do wonder exactly how those trainers think we can let our dogs enjoy the simple pleasures of being a dog without some basic training.
I feel very lucky that I can walk my dogs pretty much anywhere. If it's safe to let them off lead then I can because they have been trained to come back to me when I call them. I can trust Travis not to jump all over random humans because of the training we have done. They don't drag me around on the lead because of lead training.
All of that training allows my dogs to enjoy off lead walks where they can enjoy just being a dog.
If you live on a huge piece of land where your dogs can roam free with no interaction with the outside world then that's great for you, I'm sure your dogs can thrive with very little training. But for most of us, our dogs have to navigate a human world with lots of social rules and safety concerns. It's up to us to help them do that, I believe good training does exactly that.
