The Dales Pony Conservancy of North America is excited to announce the receipt of a donation given in honor of Debbie Hamilton, a long-time pioneer in importing, breeding and promoting the Dales Pony in the US.
This gift has been given to enable DPCNA to import frozen Dales Pony stallion semen from the UK that will then be distributed to owners of Dales Pony mares in North America for artificial insemination in order to diversify the bloodlines of this critically endangered breed here.
As we finalize the next steps to make this initiative a reality, DPCNA will continue to focus on doing all that we can to build upon Debbie Hamilton’s legacy. We anticipate that details on the distribution process will be shared with our DPCNA community after October 1, 2024.
We are so honored by the trust that has been placed in DPCNA to ensure that Debbie’s legacy lives on. Not only will this gift ensure that DPCNA can have a significant impact on improving the genetic diversity of Dales Ponies in the US, but we are also certain that this initiative would have pleased Debbie and all those who knew her and worked with her to promote and preserve the Dales Pony in the US. We know that the news of this wonderful gift will be received with the deepest gratitude by the Dales Pony community both here and in the UK.

Have you ever wondered where the term Mountain & Moorland comes from?

The term referes to the mountains and the moors of the British Isles. Each of the pony breeds having its own unique characteristics to survive the particular terrain, conditions and task it was bred for.

It was only man that encouraged their wider spread as humans traveled greater distances across the lands and seas.

Here is a map showing the area where each breed started and explaining the terminology of the British Isles 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Where entire breeds can go off track is when some one feature becomes so popular that breeders get so focused on that single piece to the neglect of the real deal basics such as soundness, temperament and general athletic ability.

Examples might include the way some Arabian breeders focus on a distorted looking dish face, some Quarter Horse breeders on extreme musculature, some race horse breeders on intense early speed, some Morgan breeders on a high knee action trot, some color breeders on specific color, any one piece of the whole that leaves other more important features neglected when decisions are being made about which stallions to breed to which mares.

Why does this happen? Probably because of ignorance about overall horsemanship that fails to take into account that horses should be sound, sane and athletic if they are to be useful to the average rider or driver.

But fads have a life of their own. One breeder produces it, some judge rewards it, and before you know it the aberration has become so popular that that’s where the money goes, and we all know the saying, “Follow the money.”

And once that starts it can so easily become a runaway train, and another breed is in trouble. And it started with some fad made popular through ignorance of basic horsemanship.

Attention Stallion owners!

❗️STALLION OWNERS❗️

Annual Stallion Service Log to replace return of Stallion Service Books

The Stallion Service Log replaces Stallion Service Books, to save postage costs for both Stallion Owners and the Society. Print off and complete a Stallion Service Log (link below 👇) for each stallion over the season and return to the Secretary via post or email by 30th November each year.

Stallion Service Books will still be issued to stallions on licensing if they are to be used on outside mares and completed white slips should still be given to owners of outside mares when the mare is serviced. However, there is no need to use the white slips if your own stallion is servicing your own mares.

Further information can be found in the guidance on the back of the Stallion Service Log document, or don’t hesitate to be in touch with any questions on [email protected]
