Recent graduate Stryker back home and doing this thing 🐮 Stryker came to us for a customized and extended Board N Train for not only off leash control but also to be safely introduced to livestock

Stryker is a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog that lives on a working cattle farm and his owners expressed the desire for him to have a “job” around the property, as working livestock is the primary function of Catahoulas

Stryker was paired with my own pack of trained cow dogs and slowly gained confidence over the span of his training until he was comfortable and controllable enough to let his instincts shine ☀️

Today, as we celebrate the birth of our country, let’s also take a look a some of the amazing American created dog breeds, including our very near and dear Coonhounds & Catahoulas 🇺🇸

❄️ Alaskan Malamute ❄️ created by the Inuit people in northwest Alaska, the Malamute was bred for strength and endurance as a freighting sled dog that also packed loads on dry land during summer, helped locate seals under the ice, and even distracted polar bears on hunts

💛 Carolina Dog 💛 incredibly unique breed that can still be found feral today in rural areas of the southern Carolina and Georgia border and are known as a primitive sight hound breed

🦝 Coonhounds 🦝 most of my clients have met one or two of my amazing Redbone Coonhounds, one of the seven registered breeds of Coonhound that also include Black & Tans, Blueticks, English, Leopards, Plotts, and Treeing Walkers. These breeds are steeped in American history, with George Washington himself being a prominent houndsman in his time. Although they’re named for the pursuit of raccoons, these tenacious hunters are also commonly used on squirrels and even big game such as bear, mountain lions, and wild hogs

🎪 Toy Fox Terrier 🎪 these small, agile, and clever dogs began breed history as barn yard ratters; keeping feed & crops safe from vermin. But they also gained great popularity in show business as circus and show performers as trick dogs

🐑 Australian Shepherd 🐑 despite having the word “Australian” in their name, the modern Aussie actually originated in California, brought by the Basques settlers as they settled in the American west. Aussies developed an iconic part of Cowboy culture, with many still being found on working farms, stock yards, barns, and rodeos

🤎 American Water Spaniel 🤎 Also known as the Wisconsin State Dog, this breed was created to hunt the Great Lakes area by acting as an efficient water retriever but also excelling and “springing” on land to flush upland game birds as well. This breed is rare, with only 3000 currently in existence

🦆 Chesapeake Bay Retriever 🦆 Developed in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia and Maryland, these large and powerful retrievers fetched an extraordinary amount of birds for their handlers, with the bay hosting one third of all migratory birds on the east coast

🖤 Boston Terrier 🖤 these compact dogs can trace their history back to a Liverpool England trend of crossing small ratting terriers with bulldog breeds, resulting in a dog named “Judge”. Judge was sold to Bostonian Robert Hooper in 1870 and became the patriarch of the Boston Terrier breed. Through selective breeding and New England Bulldog genealogy the breed evolved and the Boston Terrier Club was established in 1891

🐀 Rat Terrier 🐀 Rat Terriers were developed, non surprisingly, to kill rats. Top notch ratters, general farm dogs, and sharing a close history with the American Feist, they became a staple part of southern farming families and are very common companions at modern equestrian events

🐗 Catahoula Leopard Dogs 🐗 Obviously my favorite breed on the list, these dogs helped settle America as multi purpose hunting, tracking, treeing, herding, and guardian dogs; all jobs they still commonly preform today. Catahoulas are the Louisiana State dog and more famously, Snick is featured in our Adventure Canine logo !!

🐾 American Pit Bull Terrier 🐾 Pitties are a strong loyal breed with a bloody history of bull baiting and dog fighting, I will not shy away from the true history of this breed. But in modern times they have evolved into family dogs, farm dogs, and fantastic competitive weight pull dogs

💙 Blue Lacy 💙 the Texas state dog has a drive and temperament similar to the Catahoula, and was developed as a multi purpose, tough hunting and working southern Cur dog that excels in tracking

☀️ With our days heating up and even warmer temperatures on the horizon as we move into summer, please be mindful of your pet. We ALWAYS have water available to our dogs, limit their outdoor time during the hottest part of the day, keep them away from asphalt surfaces, and monitor their well being closely

Keep an eye out for these common symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke and if needed always contact your veterinarian ASAP !

• Excessive panting or difficulty breathing. If your dog is panting constantly or faster than normal (hyperventilation), they could be overheated. Dogs with flat faces like pugs are more susceptible to heat exhaustion because they cannot pant as efficiently.

• Dehydration. Signs of dehydration include dry nose, visible tiredness, excessive panting, and sunken eyes.

• Excessive drooling. Keep an eye out for lots of drool, or drool that is thicker and stickier than usual.

• Fever. If your dog’s nose is dry and hot instead of wet and cool, they could have a fever. A body temperature above 103°F is considered abnormal.

• Bright red, gray, purple, or bluish gums. If your dog’s gums are a different color than normal, they could be dehydrated.

• Lack of urine. If your pet has trouble producing urine, they could be dehydrated or overheated.

• Rapid pulse. The easiest way to take your dog’s pulse is to place your hand on their chest near their front elbow joint. If their pulse seems elevated, they could be overheated. (Normal pulse rate depends on the size of your dog—bigger dogs tend to have slower pulses, while small dogs and puppies have very quick pulses.)

• Muscle tremors. If your dog is shivering or shaking regardless of outside temperature, it may be caused by heat exhaustion.

• Lethargy or weakness. Overheating can cause dogs to nap more than normal or having trouble standing up or walking.

• Vomiting or diarrhea. Abnormally soft stool, or stool with blood in it, is a big warning sign for heat exhaustion.

• Dizziness. If your dog seems to have trouble walking in a straight line or keeps bumping into furniture, they might be lightheaded from dehydration or heat exhaustion
