Finally a bit of sunshine today so the pups were able to go out on the lawn for a bit. They were very excited to see Mum and Uncle Renn playing. They obviously felt secure as they soon snuggled up and went to sleep listening to the birds singing 🎶

And just like that, five weeks have gone 😭😭 The babies have started their second course of wormer and had their weekly weigh-in.

🧙 Blake (pictured) is living up to his wizard name by making food disappear at an alarming rate 🪄 and is still topping the charts at a hefty 3.4kg, with Brio and Geo close behind on 3.1kg and dainty Nell taking after her little mum at just 2.6kg (but still gaining in good proportion to her birthweight).

They have started crate training today, and have tried blueberry, watermelon, banana and turkey for their taste trial. Turkey was understandably popular, watermelon was apparently very lickable but took a bit of courage to actually chew 😂😂 although it soon went down the hatch after a couple of trial bites.

Popped the babies out in a pen on the patio for half an hour to give their pen a deep clean.

First time out and they were very perplexed by all the new sights and sounds. There was much shouting from young Mr Blake, who as usual wanted to share his opinions on the matter (sorry for the early alarm call, neighbours!) 😳 but after a busy half hour bouncing around, everyone is now fast asleep.

They have a fabric roof cover on the pen as we have been visited by hawks this year and don't want anyone accidentally mistaken for a rabbit takeaway 😱 I'm only working a few yards away but not taking any chances!

Hoping the weather will buck up towards the end of the week and we can get the garden playpen set up properly and start to enjoy some safe outdoor play.

The final episode of Meet The Pups and here's Blake's intro!

"I decided to also follow my same action hero theme with the second born son as I had for first born Brio. However, Brio, Mac and Indy were all named for 'real world' action heroes.
I decided on something different for Blake.

"Given my interests in energy work and the unseen magic that exists all around us, yet to be fully discovered by science -though it's finally catching up! - I decided on a magical action hero, so Blake is named for the cranky yet extremely wise and talented sorcerer and magical mentor, Balthazar Blake, in the Disney action film The Sorceror's Apprentice.

"Originally Merlin's apprentice, he continues to protect the innocent with quick thinking and awesome conjuring skills, and is equally capable of firing off sarcastic or witty retorts while, you guessed it, saving the day and training the newest apprentice!

"Blake has made his presence very vocally felt in the litter from almost as soon as he was born, so I believe he is named very appropriately!"

❤️ Our little noisy boy was third born of the litter and the second biggest after his sister Geo, but rapidly made his way to the top of the leaderboard with his extremely healthy appetite. ❤️

After a 5.30am start and a hearty breakfast, it's all quiet for now! Mr Brio had a rude awakening after falling asleep in his water bowl so has now decamped to the bottom corner out of view and little Nell is inside the big cardboard box which I put in as a sleeping den when the pens were expanded, and which she adores. Geo (left) and Blake are quite content in their warm corner which has just gone into shade after having had the morning sun on it for the last hour or so.

Continuing our 'Meet the Pups' profiles, here's a lovely introduction to beautiful miss Geo, the second born pup and bigger of the girls, from her future owner.

"My first red and white collie, Zephyr, is named for Air, a soft refreshing breeze, tho that same air can easily become a powerful whirlwind, and my second red and white tri, Ember, is named for Fire, smouldering energy that can flare into fiery action!
They both totally live up to their names, gentle in the house and powerful forces in action when they are working.

"So it was natural to name my third red and white tri - daddy of the puppies, River - for Water, and just like a river he can be gentle in the house, sensitive and nurturing, or fast and flowing on an agility course with hidden depths to his many talents and always refreshing to work with!

"My only girlie, his mostly white with black sister, is named Marnie, an abbreviation of an aboriginal word for snow - solid Water but quite capable of moving gently like falling snow or fast like an avalanche (usually the latter!)

"However another red and white really needed to be named for Earth, the fourth element, and I ve struggled to find a good male name that suits a fast dog as everything earthlike is rather static!

"However beautiful Geo has solved that problem for me! Geo is short for Geode (from the ancient Greek meaning 'Earthlike'), a rock formation that holds amazing crystals in its core, formed from minerals deposited by Water (a nod to her dad!)

"Humble in appearance until you delve into its depths, geodes truly are 'hidden gems' due to the sparkle and beauty and energy of the crystals they hold. And there is nothing faster than the light that crystals refract.

"Geo has been a striking beauty from her very first appearance, and if as I suspect she has even a fraction of the energy of the crystals for which she's named she will certainly give her brothers (and me!) plenty to deal with."

❤️ Geo is a beautiful, feisty little girl with really bold markings and we are sure she will only become more beautiful as she grows ❤️

The baby pups are having lots of exciting new things added to their meals every day so they develop an appetite for different things.

On Friday they tried carrots and broccoli, yesterday they tried corned beef, raspberry, strawberry, sweetcorn and salmon, and today they are trying cod, haddock and a tiny smidge of tuna.

At the moment these new foods are only a couple of mouthfuls each, to avoid upsetting their little tummies, but as they continue to grow, they will be given more variety alongside their regular food.

Here we would like to introduce you to another member of the litter - Brio. He was the firstborn pup and along with two of his siblings, will be going to live with Tina Westwood at Dagobar Dog Agility Club.

Over to his new mum for an explanation of his name.....

"I very much believe in naming my dogs for good qualities or after good people. Brio's name follows in our family tradition.

"My Mac, his grandsire, was named for MacGyver, the allround action hero in the original show of the same name that ran for seven seasons in the late 80s to early 90s.

"MacGyver was renowned for using science and general knowhow, charm, and improvisation with everyday objects to beat the bad guys, and was a peace-loving but extremely clever, athletic and capable good guy! My Mac was very much the same!

"So following the same theme I named Brio's uncle, my Indy, (Mac's oldest son and our second generation) for Indiana Jones, a well known action hero who uses knowledge, quick thinking and a broad skill set, as often as fists and sheer determination, to solve problems and beat the bad guys. Indy certainly lives up to his namesake!

"And so we come to Brio, the first born boy of the third generation! He is named for the very capable captain of a super secret spy-ship-with-teeth, in a long running book series that I love. Always saving the day, and choosing intelligence and strategy in preference to force, though more than capable of using the latter if required, he doesn't accept failure as one of his options.

Technically the name is Cabrillo - pronounced Cabr-ee-o due to Spanish origins - hence my shortened version, Brio! Brio's confidence so far makes me think that I've chosen wisely!!!"

🙂 Here's the man himself looking super cute.

The little folk are half way through their time here and will be off to pastures new before we know it 😭 so I guess it's time we started to introduce everyone properly!

To kick things off, I thought I'd tell you a little story. 🙂

A long time ago, on a freezing January day in 1911, a baby girl arrived in the world on a small farm in Trescott, near Perton - the only daughter among four children born to a small farming family.

After some discussion, her parents Albert and Gertrude were struggling to find a suitable name for their newborn, and so, being a man of simple tastes, Albert suggested they name her Nell, after his beloved sheepdog.

Like her namesake, Nell grew up to be small but strong and a fierce defender of her flock. She lived until she was 86 - an adored wife and mother, and my own much loved Nana. In accordance with the meaning of her name, she was a 'shining light' in my upbringing.

Today, over a century later, the circle is complete. This baby girl, last born of Bramble's babies, is staying here as part of our family. Meet little Nell, named in honour of my beautiful nan. ❤️

Very hot here today so we have a cool mat in the puppy box, which they appear to love, and a fan on with ice packs underneath it to keep a nice cool breeze circulating.

Bramble had a touch of mastitis on Friday (a swollen engorged rear teat - which can happen with small litters). She was uncomfortable and a little reluctant to nurse, made worse by the fact that the babies are now getting teeth and a healthy set of 'murder mittens' 😂😂

Luckily pups had just started the weaning process so they were happy to have formula and puppy gruel to tide them over for a few hours while we treated mum (a bit of hand milking and a vet trip for some antibiotics to prevent any infection starting) and she's now happily back feeding again.

However, as weaning is now under way, they'll slowly start to get more puppy food over the coming days and weeks.

They are getting the hang of keeping their box clean and already far more of the wees and poos are being concentrated in the toileting area. The box has been divided into a sleep/eat area and a toilet area, and hopefully by removing any accidents from the clean side immediately, and leaving a little bit of wee in the toilet side, they'll start to work out where to go.

They are getting very playful now and trying to do zoomies, but the feets don't always co-operate 😂😂

Three in a row and Little Miss Independent going it alone in the cool corner! Been a real juggling act keeping the temperature decent this weekend, there's a sweet spot of about 77F that they seem to like best at the moment and a change of more than a few degrees either way prompts immediate complaints.

All four are feeding like champs and looking very sturdy, and starting to play with each other now their eyes are fully open and their legs a bit less wobbly.
