Each month, we feature a post on our blog with a commonly-requested subject! As part of our mission to produce readily-available resources to our Kalamazoo pet community, we post blogs every Sunday evening at 7pm containing information, hacks, and tricks for living your fullest life with your companions. 🐶🐱

"I truly can’t say enough great things about the Cloud 9 team and their services! When I first brought home my puppy, George, I experienced the ‘puppy blues’ despite being excited. Having a puppy was harder than I expected, and I felt disheartened and overwhelmed. During a consultation call, I expressed my struggles. When Jordan visited for a meet and greet, she reassured me that I wasn’t alone in my feelings.

Starting the 12-week puppy package was a game-changer. The Pet Care Professionals came twice a week to take George on fun field trips, giving me much-needed breaks. After George came home from his trips, I would get a report filled with details of their adventure, including cute pictures, which assured me that George was being loved and cared for during his time away. Our private training lessons with Jordan went beyond basic commands like ‘sit’ and ‘stay’—we focused on skills applicable to everyday situations. I finally started to bond with my puppy and build confidence in my ability to be a dog mom! We finished the 12 weeks with George’s first-ever off-leash walk!

George is now part of the weekly doggy day camp, which is one of his favorite parts of the week. He is always so excited when I drop him off! After camp, I receive two detailed reports: one about his day at camp and another from Jordan with behavioral notes. They tailor his day to include practicing his social skills, spending time with his friends in a safe and supervised environment, and going on fun adventures!

Thanks to the Cloud 9 team, I am equipped to handle puppy adolescence, and my puppy and I are now inseparable. I am excited to continue working with them on goals for George. If you’re looking for people to care for your puppy’s individual needs, the Cloud 9 team exceeds all expectations! My kinesiology undergraduate degree instilled the "move it or lose it" mentality in me, and, in honor of the upcoming Canine Arthritis Month, let Bailey inspire you to keep your dog PHYSICALLY ACTIVE well into their golden years! 🥰

Bailey attempts private day camp bi-weekly for a full day out of the house. We keep her mind sharp by introducing BRAND NEW activities and challenges. We bring out her puppy energy by granting her freedom of movement to (respectfully) bounce carelessly throughout our local parks. Beth & Darryl Yerrick of the Dog Dive fit her in between their swim sessions to loosen up her achy, stiff senior-dog joints with hydrotherapy in the heated pool. We even give her opportunities to hang with other dogs, though she's not huge on the social-outgoing aspect. Finally, she snacks to keep her energy stable and sleeps un-interrupted between cuddles in our office and a quiet crate.

Whether adult and settled in or old and enjoying retirement, keep your dog PHYSICALLY ACTIVE to make the most of those final years! We are so grateful for Bailey's human in entrusting us with her sweet girl for a private camp enrichment experience.

Does your dog come to jump all over you at random?

Jumping isn't always about manners: sometimes, that's your dog's way of seeking comfort! 🧐

There's no singular answer for how to respond to behavior because behavior has many different functions. That's why we don't post a ton of training advice, and also why we work in monthly activity and behavior plans in day camp, recommend recurring services for enrichment, and complete training in packages only!

Behavior is varied, complex, and unique to each individual. When we get a dog that turns to jump on the handler in social situations or uncertain environments, it's typically them seeking comfort from us. In this context, pushing them away or scolding them can cause them to bottle up emotions and explode later. It's not just about showing them what to do: it's about reading their responses and responding in a way that meets the original need of the behavior.

Behavior is communication, and "stopping" behavior limits communication. "Communication" from us as a euphemism of saying"stop that" may be what we need for safety out and about, AND, when we choose one path for modifying behavior, we are always closing others. Be informed, and choose wisely! 😃

Know that your pets are carried with us in our minds and hearts forever. It sounds cheesy, but I mean it.

I think of those that have passed on from this life when a new puppy of your breed comes into class and looks just like them.

I wonder how they're doing when I see another pet do a funny mannerism that they always did.

Maybe you've moved away and long stopped using services, but I'm traveling through your new city to go to another training or trial event, and I silently wish you well.

It's a gift to be welcomed into the lives of those around us: while we aim to be a long-term support, this is true regardless of how briefly we're there for you: a day, a night, a weekend, a busy month, or longer. Community is the backbone on which all things worth experiencing in life are built. We're intentional in building our services and business structure around connection, resources, and filling gaps for unmet needs. It's everything, especially in the current times.

Did you know that we can take intact dogs into day camp?! 🤔

Yep, no need to spay/neuter at 6 months: especially as more veterinarians recommend waiting! ✅

Our small group size of 4 dogs, limited 1:2 MAXIMUM staff:dog ratio, and space allows for safe protocols like crate-and-rotate, as well as years of experience working with intact males and females. Females can only conceive for brief periods in their cycles, and we're familiar with the signs AND have plan A, B, and C in place. This includes arranging our playgroups safely at sign-up to remove any risk for a breeding to occur.

Don't wait to socialize: we're happy to take them!

Sometimes people say their dog is high energy...and sometimes they REALLY. MEAN. their dog is high energy!

Wrigley is a LOT of dog with an adorably sweet face. When we bring a new dog into our home, we owe it to them to do our research in finding the best match. Sometimes, everything goes well, and we still end up with a LOT to handle, and Wrigley's parents are certainly putting their all into getting through the Tween Terrors of adolescent behavior.

It's also given her outlets of resilience to remain socially optimistic and curious after a dog altercation in her old neighborhood while young! So important to ensure a young dog doesn't swing TOO far on the "pendulum" of 'neutrality' by having positive experiences with other dogs to fall back on.

Wrigley is an absolute doll to have in day camp, and we're set up JUST PERFECTLY for dogs like her! From enrichment to outings to play, she enjoys our full day to give her humans a rest from settling in from their big move to their new home and get all her needs met to come home with a full cup—because the LAST thing a high-energy dog like her needs is to be full of energy but grouchy from over-exertion!

Always a delight to give dogs like Wrigley kind, structured environments to be their BEST selves in—and shoutout to her parents for giving her a full life and rising to the occasion of meeting her needs! 💖

Oh man, does London love his sniffs!

We have been there from the very start helping out with this handsome boy's care since he first came home. It has been SUCH a pleasure and privilege watching him grow up!! Recently, we have switched up his enrichment plan to include some daily "scent games" to keep that GSPD brain hard at work - and it has been so fun to set his scent tins up and watch him go!!!
