Josie update week 6:
No more muzzle!!! Josie saw the dentist on Monday and had another CT scan of her face. It showed that most of the fractures are nearly healed. The worst one on the lower right jaw sill has some healing to do, but as long as she continues to eat soft food and avoids chewing on hard toys she should make a full recovery. Her smile will remain crooked, but it makes her extra cute when the tongue hangs out to the side!
Josie came home the evening after her recheck and wasted no time trying out her new mouth. She was finally able to squeak her toys and spent all evening playing with every one she could get her hands (mouth) on. It was like she was trying to make up for lost time! She has since decided that it is fun to chase and bite her tail too. And shoes. And slippers...
We are forever grateful for everyone who donated money, time, and love to help this miracle girl!

Josie update week 5:
She's doing great!!
Josie is eating a case of canned food every five days- one teaspoonful at a time! She is growing longer and taller and made it to 25 pounds. Jose is also getting some opportunities to be a puppy: Instead of checks at the dentist she got her vaccines this past week, played with a new friend, Kaia, and visited Two Pals & a Pup to pick out a collar and toys (yes, she can pick up tiny ones even with her muzzle on!). She still loves to snuggle with her big sister, Charlie. Charlie tolerates her but wants to play less as Josie becomes more active. Josie also loves to curl up in human laps and "help" me at work.
Hoping for good news at her dental recheck next week. She'll have another CT scan to check the healing of all her bones. Fingers crossed she can get her buttons and wires removed!

Josie update week 4:
We are entering our 4th week with Josie here at home. We are all getting a little more sleep, adjusting to new routines, and Josie is meeting new friends.

I am happy to report that her feeding tube was removed this morning at her recheck with the dentist!! Josie's gums are red over one of the jaw fractures, but I will continue to monitor and rinse her mouth after each meal. Believe it or not, this girl can eat like a champ- even with her mouth unable to fully open. No chewing, but she quickly licks up tiny chunks of canned food and easily gulps liquid food from a syringe. Hopefully we can get her weight up. She only gained half a pound over the last 2 weeks 😬.

Josie got her second DA2PP and Bordetella vaccines so she is closer to more exploration of the world. We are working on safe socialization and she has met more than a dozen dogs, as well as a cat and a bird!

In two weeks Josie will go under anesthesia for the dentist to fully reassess the bone fractures and the inside of her mouth. I suspect she'll need some baby teeth extracted since she isn't able to chew and work them out. But, we are hopeful that everything is healing as well as she is feeling!!

Josie update, week 3:
No big news this week- which isn't a bad thing! Her mouth seems to be healing, but we are going to be extra cautious and continue using the feeding tube for one more week. It is really tough to get enough calories in this growing girl, despite trying to feed her every 2-3 hours. Her legs are growing tall and she's a skinny little green bean!

Since Josie is not fully vaccinated she goes out for "walks" by riding in a wagon. This gives her the chance to safely see the world. She also loves to sunbathe with her big sister on the back patio and pounce on tennis balls in the backyard.

Next check-up with the dentist is Monday, April 18th. Fingers crossed her jaw bones are healing and she will be able to eat food!!

Josie update, week 2:
Josie had a recheck with the dentist at Animal Dental Care & Oral Surgery yesterday. Unfortunately, the previously repaired area over one of the jaw fractures had opened up inside her mouth. Everyone in the dental department stayed late to operate once more on Josie. She came home late last night with a new feeding tube (this time in her esophagus) and buttons (yes, actual shirt buttons) on her face connected by suture to better help stabilize her jaw. We will continue to keep the muzzle and e-collar/cone on while trying to keep her from licking, eating, and whining since all cause movement of the mouth and jaw... poor pup can't be much of a puppy, but thankfully she loves to snuggle!

Puppy update:
She is doing great! Kayo got a name change to Josephine (aka Josie or Jo) and aside from wearing a muzzle she is behaving like a normal puppy. Josie is eating like a champ, loves running in the back yard and chasing & pawing at tennis balls. She has found her voice, and she figured out how to nudge open her enclosure & climb over the pet gate. This girl’s not letting anything stop her or slow her down!
Josie has a recheck with the dentist on Tuesday & we’re hoping she’s healing as well as she seems to be feeling.
A big thank you to everyone who has donated money for her medical bills- we couldn’t do this without you!

I had the honor to drive this little girl to the dental specialist early this morning- only one step on her long journey to healing.

This Boxer puppy was attacked by another dog causing two breaks in her jaw bone. She was about to be euthanized when a guardian angel, Jen Weston, rescued her and organized further care. After two nights in the hospital with a feeding tube and muzzle to stabilize her mouth this puppy is now having a CT scan and oral surgery. In just three days the costs are estimated to be near $8000. If there is anyone interested in donating to help cover her bills, please message me or Jen Weston.

Our senior boy, Edison, had an acupuncture appointment with one our favorite friends and vet, Dr. Caitlin Leonard, so Emmeline came along to meet her! She was very good even though it was super hard to sit still through an appointment.
