02/04/2024

To have a good relationship with your dog you need a two-way communication system. That is why training is so important. It allows you to quickly put a system in place to communicate your wants and needs to your dog, and visa-a-versa.

You also want communication from your dog to understand how they are feeling. There are many reasons your dog might growl such as generalized fear, nervousness around new dogs and people, being startled, feeling frustrated, being in pain, during playful fun, etc. If they give you subtle signals like growls and we ignore them, our dogs take that as information that they need to get louder, usually meaning to snap and bite.

Punishing your dogs will negatively affect your relationship with them and will NOT fix the problem. If we punish our dogs when they give us any warning signs, subtle or loud, it can suppress your dog’s warning signals. It does not change anything about how the dog feels and can lead to the dog no longer giving warning before a bite. You WANT a warning growl before a bite! A dog who becomes a “silent biter” is a much more troublesome dog to be around.

The bottom line is that your choices affect your dog’s choices. Contact me today if you want to learn more.

This month I am able to celebrate 5 YEARS IN BUSINESS!!!

I am the owner and sole trainer in my women owned small business and I feel incredibly proud and accomplished that I am still here and able to keep this business running. Half of all small businesses do not make it to the 5-year mark, so I feel very grateful to still be here.

I appreciate all the relationships I have made and the trust that my clients have given me in the past years. My ultimate goal for my company was, and still is, to help as many people and pets as possible in my community and I could not do that without all of the wonderful support of my family, friends, and community.

Aberdeen - Thank you so much for all the amazing love, support, and referrals. Please continue to share my services and information and here’s to the next 5 years!

Helping with “counter surfing” or, searching for and stealing food and other items off counters, is something I get ask ...
13/02/2024

Helping with “counter surfing” or, searching for and stealing food and other items off counters, is something I get ask about all the time. It is a very common occurrence for most dogs. It can be a very frustrating and difficult to manage behavior once it gets a little out of control. It is made even more difficult because it is a “self-rewarding” behavior, meaning when the dog does the behavior, they reward themselves with their finds, and they do not need any input from you. Genetically, dogs are opportunists who naturally acquire food anywhere they find it. Dogs just do what works.

So, remember to skip the yelling, the punishment, the sq**rt bottle, and the snappy traps. Simply make it more rewarding to stay on the floor, and then your dog won’t be so focused at getting on the counter.

So, what should you do to help with counter surfing?

• Be willing to change your own behavior first, before you expect your dog’s behavior to change.
• Focus on progress and not perfection.
o Are the episodes of counter surfing decreasing in number and/or duration?
• Use all management tools at your disposal to prevent your dog from getting to and/or up on the counters. Your best and most effecting training tool is prevention, prevention, prevention!
o Check out this table tennis net that my client is trying with her counter surfing dog. Might that be a good management option for you?

So important to realize that our dogs will not tell us when they are in pain.
09/11/2023

So important to realize that our dogs will not tell us when they are in pain.

What is ‘Silent pain?’ 🤔

Did you know that dogs are genetically predisposed to hide pain because in the wild, weakness or injury would make them vulnerable to predators.

According to some experts, more than half our dogs suffer from ‘silent pain’ that their owners are unaware of. Dogs will rarely vocalise even moderate pain and often just run through it and don’t show any signs.

Silent pain is difficult to diagnose as it is subtle and develops slowly over a long time and any slight changes in the dog are often just attributed to normal ageing.

Things to consider with your dog-

✳️ Dogs are very loyal animals - they will follow you for as long as they can- on walks, up the stairs, onto the bed, ignoring any pain because they want to be with you

✳️ When doing zoomies, playing, chasing squirrels etc your dog won’t feel pain as their endorphins (their powerful natural pain relieving hormone) will be at released - the pain will come later when the dog is home and resting.

✳️ Your dog will not, however, be able to make that connection between the earlier exercise and the pain they’re now experiencing due to the time delay so they will repeat it the next day and the next and so on…..

✳️ Ball orientated dogs will ignore pain and continue to chase the ball as long as you throw it for them until they tire

✳️ Over a period of time and as your dog ages, the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons become less able to deal with these demands and that’s when injuries start to happen.

✳️ You may at this point start to notice some changes in your dog, they might start to move a little
differently or be less enthusiastic on walks but again, it might not be physical signs. Your dog may develop behavioural problems, become noise sensitive, nervous or agressive with other dogs or may just pant more or find it harder to settle.

✳️ So …..just because your dog can leap for the ball/ jump up and down off the bed/ do ten zoomie laps of the field etc doesn’t mean you should let them and it does NOT mean they are not in pain!

Please share to increase awareness

And just to finish - a pic of my gorgeous arthritic girlie enjoying some autumn sun ☀️ !!

I have to rave about my client real quick. I was hired to help Kia deal with some of her big feelings around strange dogs and we implemented some relaxation techniques using a “Place” behavior. Cut to our next session and my client had taught all THREE of her dogs the “Place” behavior and they were able to offer this behavior within 3 minutes of me entering the house. A perfect example of taking a basic skill set and expanding it to your whole family and make it fit your needs. So proud of this team!
