🍃 It’s 4/20! 🍃

Listen up folks 📣

Your veterinary staff does NOT care and will not judge if your pup may have accidentally gotten into your stash today. Be up front and honest to avoid unnecessary diagnostics and an even bigger emergency bill by letting them know. It is easily treatable if we know what’s going on.

Even licking/ sniffing the smallest amount can cause major symptoms in our fur babies!

Symptoms to watch for:

• neurologic symptoms 🧠
• agitation 👀
• dribbling urine 💦
• not being able to stand 🫨
• sleepiness 😴
• vomiting 🤮
• hyper-reactivity to movements toward head/ face 💥

🍀 COOL CASE ALERT 🍀

An 11 year old White's Tree Frog presented to me back in the fall for a toe mass. I talked about risks with the owner, she ultimately decided to watch for growth and inhibition of mobility.

Fast forward, this guy was definitely experiencing mobility issues with more growth and the owner decided to go ahead with surgery.

This was a new one for me but after researching and reaching out to my OG exotic vet peer, we came up with a straight forward plan. We were able to avoid general anesthesia and use a local block with a guillotine method. Patient did so well!
This case was super rewarding for me and my team! 🐸💚🐸

Check out this cute little guy that I got to see today!

Veiled Chameleons need specific husbandry requirements for optimal quality of life!
TLDR- below are the most important requirements! Please let me know if you have any questions! ☺️

💚 Screen or mesh sided enclosures are best for air flow that is needed
💚 Enclosure size is very important, juveniles can start at a 16"x16"x30" enclosure; adults need a larger enclosure measuring 2'x2'x4'
💚 They love to hide in foliage and vines that provide horizontal perches to bask, rest and travel
💚 Foliage can include plastic (not silk) as well as Ficus, hibiscus and Pothos- live plants will help maintain humidity in their enclosure
💚 It is important to leave the bottom of the enclosure bare or covered with paper towels, substrate can cause a myriad of issues that need to be avoided for health reasons
💚 Lighting: 2 forms of light are needed for ~12 hours a day
#1 a heat source to help regulate their body temperature and to allow them to bask
#2 a UVB light for calcium absorption (to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease)- they usually need to be replaced within 6 months
💚 Temperature: it is important to provide a temperature gradient inside their enclosures as they regulate their body temperature.
- day temp= room temperature 72-80 (lower in enclosure) with basking spot of 85-95 degrees (higher in the enclosure)
- night temp= heat source during this time is not needed, they do well with a nighttime temperature drop as long as the temps are mid to high 40s
💚 Diet: they love crickets! As long as they are supplemented with the correct vitamins and calcium!
- their water source will come from the dew that is on the foliage provided in their enclosures, as they will not recognize a water dish as a source for hydration. That being said, misting their enclosure is important! Twice a day for about 2 minutes should suffice.

Make sure you request no Lillie’s for those Easter and Mothers Day bouquets if you have kitty friends! 💐🐾

March is Pet Poison Awareness Month.

We will be sharing info on what to keep away from pets all month long.

Easter and Mother's Day are two of the most dangerous holidays for cats for one reason: lily poisoning. 💐

Check out the graphic below for examples, but as a general rule, just keep lilies away from kitties.

Let's talk about P**P! 💩

Why are we nosy about your dogs p**p/ why do we do f***l testing?

We first check the...
Color, Consistency, Contents, and Odor

Then, we set it up and look at the p**p under microscopic evaluation!
- to check for intestinal parasites:
🪱 these types of parasites can cause weight loss, dull hair coat, lethargy, and blood loss among other things
- to check for bacterial overgrowth:
🦠 this can cause consistency issues and if left untreated, wreak havoc on the gastrointestinal system

Let's talk Breed Predispositions!!
Part 2: Dental Disease 🦷

February is National Pet Dental Month!!
Many clinics will be doing specials on dental cleanings/ procedures so be sure to call and schedule in advance!

Most Common Breeds affected-
1) Poodles
2) Dachshunds
3) Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
4) Shelties
5) Greyhounds
6) MOST small breed dogs 🙃

A dog's oral health is very much similar to ours. You may not know, but it is actually recommended to brush your dog’s teeth twice a day, just like us! This will help keep tartar and plaque at bay. They also have 42 teeth, so the smaller the mouth, the increase in likelihood of having bad oral health because of crowding, meaning more bacteria build up!
What is tartar and plaque? Bacteria that is laid down below and above the gum line. In turn, this causes a ton of problems if not addressed in a timely manner.

CASCADE OF EVENTS:
If left untreated, the tartar and plaque build up can create gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).
This stimulates the capillaries in the gums to also become irritated and will uptake the bacteria from tartar/ plaque sitting on the teeth and beneath the gum line into the blood stream.
This, in turn, can wreak havoc on the heart and kidneys sometimes causing heart disease and/or kidney disease.

Signs of dental disease to watch for! 👀
~ bad breath
~ slow to eat
~ facial swelling
~ lethargy/ low energy

🌟🌟🌟 even if none of the signs above are present, it is always best to have your vet do a thorough oral exam during their annual appointments! 🌟🌟🌟

I pray...
Every day I head to work I pray.
I pray for my mind to be free and clear in order to make the best medical decisions for your pets.
I pray for my hands to be steady and skillful during procedures and surgeries.
I pray for patience and compassion during those difficult discussions with clients.
No matter your beliefs or spirituality, know that this is a crucial step in my medical practice. I treat your pets how I would want my own to be treated, always! 🩵🙏

Let's talk about Breed Predispositions!
Part 1: Congenital Portosystemic Shunts
Most Common Breeds affected-
1) Schnauzers 🐾
2) Yorkshire Terriers 🐾
3) Beagles 🐾
4) Shih Tzu's 🐾

I will preface this by making sure you KNOW your breeder, the genetics of the sire and dam, and their husbandry and environment PRIOR to making a big purchase on a pet. THEN, get pet insurance! I will always be a HUGE advocate for adopting/ rescuing due to shelters busting at the seams and overpopulation!

Congenital Portosystemic Shunts are developed in the fetal stage. It is usually when a major blood vessel shunts or bypasses past the liver, causing a build up of toxins in the body, as the liver is used to filter these toxins. 🦠

Common signs to look for in young puppies:
- stunted growth/ poor muscle development
- neurologic signs (i.e. seizure activity, disorientation, star gazing, head pressing)

Common signs to look for in older pets:
- recurrent urinary tract infections
- urinary stones, etc.

How is it diagnosed? 💉
Many times blood work will aid in diagnosis; a complete blood count (RBCs, WBCs, packed cell volume, etc.) along with a blood chemistry (liver enzymes, kidney enzymes, electrolytes, etc.).
Sometimes bile acids and a urinalysis will help as well.

How is it treated?
In young puppies, a surgical procedure is available but sometimes, due to monetary constraints, that is not an option. Unless they are older when diagnosed, medical management is difficult to obtain in these cases. Studies show that survival rate with medical management averages at 2 years with good blood flow through the liver.

Please watch for these symptoms and signs in young puppies, if you are worried, it's better to be safe than sorry and get your fur baby checked out!

The dreaded and often times deadly Parvovirus...
It's PARVO SEASON folks! 🦠💩🤮
Questions to ask yourselves:
~Is my dog up to date on their Parvo vaccine? (this vaccine is usually the combo vaccine that also protects against distemper virus, parainfluenza virus, and adenovirus, +/- leptospirosis virus)
~Is my dog exposed to dogs that may not be vaccinated?
~Does my dog routinely go on walks on public property, i.e. dog parks, boarding facilities, gas station potty areas?

Things to watch for:
~Mild to severe inappetence (not wanting to eat)
~Diarrhea (can be bloody)
~Vomiting
~Lethargy (low to no energy)
*AT THE FIRST SIGNS, please take your fur baby to the vet. Prevention (vaccination) is key but early treatment has the MOST success!

This virus is gnarly y'all...in lay terms, it completely obliterates the lining of the intestinal tract.
Why is this such a serious problem? That lining has a big part in the responsibility for nutrient uptake, their IMMUNE system and in whole affects their entire body system.
So, it is better to be safe than sorry and get your baby checked out if any of the signs above are noted!
