Enrollment Open!
Enrollment is Open! Join us for a personal coaching experience to transform your dog’s fitness level! We only open enrollment once, maybe twice a year because we enjoy getting to know you and your dog and giving quality coaching. New this season will be weekly live Q&A exclusive to new members for six weeks and then of course we will also be available in the main Facebook group. We know that canine fitness can be overwhelming for new students so we developed an easy step-by-step course to get you started and then we help you progress with more challenge and tools to help you stay consistent. We believe canine fitness should be safe, fun and effective. The course was developed by a CCFT and a certified rehabilitation vet. Safety is our number one priority and getting to know you and your dog is important to us. Join today or let us know any questions you may have ! Link is in our bio for Instagram, or comments in FB. Link is also on our website at www.coach4paws.com. Class starts June 1! Enrollment closes soon.
Have you attempted the down to stand exercise on two inflatables but struggle with keeping good form? If working with either two twindiscs or two propels in a traditional set up (four feet on two props oriented horizontally with space between) your dog may have the tendency to dip their elbows below the prop. It’s challenging to try and stop them in time to lure them back to a stand before their elbows dip below the prop. To help prevent this from happening, consider placing the propels end to end and secure with the strap or an alternate setup is to use a prop(s) in between the twindiscs like these new balance bars from Flexiness. If using a prop(s) in between, ensure they are approximately the same height as the two main inflatables. With either of these equipment setups, the dog still gets the benefit of the additional balance challenge of being on inflatables but correct form is more ensured.
Before attempting this exercise on inflatables, please ensure your dog can proficiently perform a down to stand on the flat or plank first. Also they should first be proficient balancing on inflatables. To correctly perform this exercise, the dog should not move their feet during the down to stand and both front limbs and back limbs should fold back into the down at the same time with the vertebral column relatively level (not front end first as if to bow followed by the rear end). This exercise takes sufficient strength in the limbs and core to execute correctly so if your dog struggles to perform this exercise on two inflatables, regress to practicing on a stable surface until strength is obtained and your dog understands the skill.
Happy Training !

Does this count as “stillness”? 😂
Plyometric exercises have been shown to help human athletes improve power, strength, speed, balance and agility. With this research in mind, we have included plyometric exercises in our membership for more advanced level dogs and those who participate in sports. This exercise aims to help the sport dog prepare for the forces of landing from jumps. The exercise requires core and rear end strength to jump from a sit position as well as foot placement precision upon landing. We give more guidance and discussion on why it’s particularly helpful for young dogs in agility, and we teach you all the foundation steps required to execute it safely. Please note, this is an advanced level exercise that should only be performed by advanced dogs in fitness AND who have shown proficiency in earlier steps of this exercise. Help your sport dog stay in the game and improve strength and power.

Can your dog find balance? This exercise is a progression of front and back foot targeting and learning a balanced stand on stable objects. Lure them gently off the props, then throw a cookie behind them. The pup will come forward at some speed and and they need to try and find balance on the two blocks. You may have to be ready with a cookie to stop them from “overshooting the runway”. Body awareness exercises are important for a puppy as well as all aged dogs. For my sport dogs, I want them to be sure footed while performing obstacles and body awareness exercises hone those important skills. #canineconditioning #futuresportdog #k9fitness #sheltiesofinstagram #puppiesofinstagram #puppies #puppyfitness #coach4paws #bodyawarenessexercises #puppiesoffacebook
Incorporating life skills like recalls into your daily walk is a great way to combine exercise with training! Always have cookies with you or a toy to reward a great recall. While this is essential to do with a puppy or young dog, you can also do this with older dogs and get double the exercise mileage since you can let them get ahead and then recall them back and make a fun game of it ! #canineconditioning #caninelifeskills #canineenrichmentgames #puppiesofinstagram #sheltiesofinstagram #k9fitness #hugthemeveryday #caninefitness #coach4paws
Before attempting paw pods with your beginner dog to fitness, try first with small stable objects. This is also helpful to puppies to learn body awareness while not stressing their joints with unstable equipment before they are grown. Learning foot targeting on stable objects first will set your dog up for success and lay a proper foundation to progressing exercises using unstable equipment. Here we are using a DIY of small containers covered top and bottom with yoga mat remnants and filled with sand. Depending on the size of your dog you could also use hockey pucks or other small round stable objects. Start first with front paws and then progress to rear paws. Rear paws will be more difficult. This 17 week old puppy has been doing foot targeting using small planks before I attempted rear foot targeting with two smaller objects. #caninebodyawareness #canineconditioning #k9enrichment #k9fitness #coach4paws #stablebeforeunstable #puppiesofinstagram #puppybodyawareness #sheltiesofinstagram #sportdogsofinstagram
